Personally I have know idea why play biting is such an issue. First off the dogs know their own strength and the amount of intensity. I physically play with dogs all the time and they nip at my arms and hands. It doesn't hurt, doesn't brake the skin and they'll stop when you no longer initiate the play. People should just suck it up the dogs are fully aware of the strength and know the difference fight and play. Socialize the pup with other dogs and they'll learn how intensity to play with.
@ProphetGuardian Do you have a german shepherd? I think you're wrong. My puppy does hurt and does break skin, not in an aggressive way. This is typical of the breed. So it is an issue!
@MsScaryfeet I don't personally on a German Shepherd but I do interact with them daily. My comment referred to an adult dog not a puppy. The best way for a puppy to is too interact with other dogs (both pups and adults) and through play they will learn how much intensity to use. Another good technique is to push toward the dog with whatever body part he's nipping at. Instead of backing away ( which make it more fun for him).
got my pup tyo start biting a toy but he still bitz people and i dont want that to happen he also bits y older dog rocko and my grand parnts r coming wat do i do?? im worried and i dont want him to keep biting help help!!!! ~Eve And Rocko
i have a german shepherd and no matter what i try to do he still bites and im about ready to give up hope on him he is almost 3 months old and its really starting to get annoying and hurt more and more by the bite to a point where my hands bleed when he bites! HELP!!!!!
@Radjehuty - did you not watch the video? Whilst time outs have their place, 30 seconds is really the max you should need and strong eye contact and being overly harsh won't actually help. Time outs need to be your back up consequence when you miss the opportunity to redirect the behaviour to some more appropriate outlet, NOT your 'go to' solution in the first instance.
My dog is a few years old. Shes starting to bite. My mother keeps hiting her because she thinks its the right way. I tell her that she'll keep biting if you hit her, but my mom keeps doing it. So, how do I stop her from biting in your way?
I agree with the toy thing. Don't let your dog play with toys (other than rawhide) unless you decide to have play time. Another problem with not taking the toy back is that the dog can become very possessive of the toy. My dog used to have a huge problem with possessive behavior, so I started taking his toys away when not playing. It nearly eliminated the possessive behavior. It becomes a privilege for doing something good, not property to be stolen.
I Just got a new puppy. She is a NFLD/LAB. She is 9 weeks old and crazy! All she does is bite, chew, eat and pee. This is my third dog but I have to say my worst for biting.God it hurts! loll.
I use the"OUCH" method and "NO" then ignore her(well Try to) but when I say ouch or no she lunges at me more and bites harder. Then what do you do????
@shelly09ify Put her in time out and keep her there for a couple minutes. Make sure your voice is stern and you make sure she's looking at you in the eyes before you put her in time out. She needs to know you're serious and that what she was doing isn't acceptable.
Like human kids...puppies totally have ADD because they're so curious lol. So I think a lot of people make the mistake of trying to train their dogs without making sure they're paying attention to you.
Forget all your 'methods', remember and reconnect to who and what you are and just make your dog understand you don't want to be bitten. If you can't I suggest therapy, NOT for your dog of course, for you.
Dogs naturally understand it's not OK to bite, as is instantly clear when seeing a puppy being inspected by a grown dog it doesn't know. It wouldn't dream of biting.
...its teeth on something, ripping and tearing at things and be able to play.
Dogs don't like 'NO's very much, especially when there's ONLY 'NO's.
Simply identify why she's biting, is she bored, does she want to play, doesn't she like you, is she aggravated and then fix the situation.
Merely trying to 'train' desired behaviours into a dog without understanding context is autistic behaviour and it always backfires. Dogs aren't half as stupid as dog 'trainers'...
well m8 i ve just got a puppy its about one month... when he bites me i m saying . mike(his name) stop... and when he continuous i hit him in the head(softly) but then he gets more agressive and then... i trow him in the air.. (for a reason he stops for a while but then he starts again) maybe i need to keep doing that till he gets it.. or maybe i m wrong ... i want hit to bite but.. not me.. :D any advise will be helpful and appreciated ...
My dog runs in a circle around me with high pitch barking and then attacks my legs. What can I do? Nothing seems to work. Have tried every method including the crate when I can catch her. She is 12 weeks old.
my cousins dog who is a maltese 8 yrs, loves to run around the house and almost in a play-like "tag" game with out the touching part. sometimes i try to pet him while he is in that play/chase mode, but he doesn't accept it, he only "sneezes, or goes into crouch or bow position, and begins to bark sometimes. then i try to run away while looking at him to encourage coming back. its very funny..i wish i could still reconstruct that to begin chasing a toy instead, and bringing it back to me...tips??
I connect with my pit in so many different ways. Moxie and I have constant eye contact when I am kissing her nose. What she absolutely loves and I have also noticed this same technique also calms her down quickley is that I scratch her neck from the base of her head under her collar and by raking my fingers gently she just becomes still and will sit and allow me to do this as long as I can. She is one of my children and I love ur videos..
Thanks Zak for a lovely advice, even though i try doing what u said sometimes and text book ways other times. From now on, i will be consistent with this method. I had written you a mail regarding this yesterday itself. However, my labrador - Sam (8 weeks old) bites all the time whenever he is not sleeping. infact, whenever i try to train him as well, he bites even to get the treat. Would be great if you could respond? thanks
Zak: the dog of my dear friend keeps biting the smaller dog, when I come over to see them. When I give attention to the Husky, he is happy. The second I pet the smaller dog, the Husky bites the leg behind. What can my friend do to train the Husky not to bite the other dog?
@gabz1985 What people are refering to as teething is when puppies are still chewing after their teeth have already grown in. After a puppy's teeth have grown their gums are not sore so teething is not the issue.
This is by far the best video I've seen about puppy biting. I feel like I'm getting attacked by my puppy, but after watching this I'm no longer discouraged, but rather encouraged. Zak you have great enthusiasm and an amazing ability to explain behavior to silly oversenitive humans who don't like being chew toys.
My 1 yr old border loves the frisbee - when I go to pick it up, he is super intense and excited and snaps (heading toward the frisbee) but too close to my hand. He gets my hand sometimes...he doesn't break skin but I really couldn't trust him to play with a child. How do I "nip" this in the bud...!
I don't believe you're correct on this video. I disagee on what u say the 2 main reasons for why puppy's bite . One may be true but the other is wrong. Puppys do explore by mouth, but they dont teeth. Puppys and humans are very different human babys don't have teeth when they are born. A baby will teeth because their gums are sore when teeth grow in. Puppys are born with teeth, and so don't teeth.
@acopper1243 Puppies aren't born with teeth. The teeth start to grow about 2 weeks after they're born, and their back teeth come out around 6 weeks old. Puppies do teeth.
Now I stop her immediately, even if she is doing some harmless play biting with Sudz or my other dog Jimmy. I feel guilty for doing that, because I know that dogs play that way, but I'm not sure when, or if I should put an end to that kind of playing. Can you tell me your thoughts on this Zak? Thanks.
I have 3 beautiful dogs. I connect with one of them, Lacey, by throwing the tennis ball. She loves to catch it, and she is great at this. She is approximately 4, or somewhere around that (she's a rescue). She like to play bite, and I have let her do this up until recently. One day when the FedEx person came to my door, all my dogs got excited, and she bit my dog Sudz on the ear. He had a deep hole, and I had to take him for stitches.
hi i have a 9 wk apbt and when i first got him he would bite and i would yelp like a puppy cuz thats what i was told to do so he knows it hurts. but now that he is a little bit older he is biteing alot harder and showing his teeth real mean looking and i yelp or scream ouch and he pays me no mind at all and keeps biteing i dont know how to make him stop its worse cuz i have kids and when they wake up in the morning he right away want to play and naws at their feet and shoes ect pleas help!
Hi Zak, I have a puppy that is 14 weeks old now and since we have had him he has always like to bite although he does not bite as hard now he is still biting. when should we expect him to learn that biting flesh is unacceptable.
spock is a english bulldog / pitbul mix (brilliant animal by far the smartest lil dog ive owned ) how spock knows momma loves him is lots of back scratching bellyryubbing good times
my dog is a cocker spaniel I got her 2/14/11 she was born 10/19/10 she like to bit a lot I got her toys to bit how can I stop her from bitting me and the kids
When my dog is biting my stuff, he gets defensive and showing his teeth that he's about to bite when I am about to get it. Now I just distract just his attention by making startling sound noise say I am "angry" with some cat and sneakingly get my stuff back. He seem to forget my stuff every time. Not sure if it's right though.
I have a chihuahua name D.J. he just turned 3 yrs old. I rubbed his belly, i play kisskiss with him and he loves it. He know how to fetch his ball but he scared of a frisbee.lol I want to play with he more but dont know any games.Do you know so good games my baby will play
hi there... i have a great dane, she is 7 months old and when me and my mum take her outside its like she's having a fit or something. she starts jumping and biting us.. and when we try to take her inside she refuses to move when we get close to the house... she only started refusing to move about 2-3 months ago... can you please reply as we don't no what to do... we want to get this sort of behavior out of her quickly as she's a big dog.. thanks :-D
Do some editing! Viewers are more likely to stay interested if you cut your dialogue into choppy segments. a common practice on here. i like the advice though! i wana puppy :(

I trained my dog by spending every spare moment with him, and being super pumped when he got it right. He's never been interested in treats and rewards and he wants to please me. He sure is one special dog

We run a rescue here in Illinois. We have a puppy that is about 3 months old. She has a huge biting problem. She has broken skin just for no reason. She acts as if she is on drugs, "run for your lives" behavior as I like to call it. What insight would you have to help us better train her so she can find her forever family?
Last night it was 16 degrees really cold and i have 3 dog named Roxy Tootie & Chevy and we put Roxy in her kennel (inside) and we let Chevy inside (he's an outside dog) Chevy was a really good dog he didn't pee or anything he just laid there on his little cover all night
What can i do about my Pug hating a certain dog at the dog park? He gets along with all small dogs, most big dogs but there is one big dog he hates, so much that hell chase and growl a bite at.
lol i love to wrestle with my puggle tony. yes he is a small dog so i gently wrestle with him. i basically just roll him back and forth on his back while growling a little bit ya know how dogs growl when playing. and i also take my hand and like grab him and twitch my hand a little bit. he just loves it he doesnt get mad at me he really enjoys wrestling.
What if your dog is already 2 years old and he bites and barks people he dosent no please help me I really want to be able to let him off the lead in the park please please comment:D
i have a 3 year old cairn terrier(buddy) as the name suggests hes a very friendly dog but in the last 6 months or so he has become very aggresive towards other male dogs and it is becoming a big problem, have you any tips on what could of caused this and how to deal with it please help....
Hi zac my name is Lisa and I really need your help we have had a terrior dog (misty) for the last 12 years she is female. But I have recently gotten a teacup yorkie puppy (lexi) that is also female. Misty is constantly avoiding her and growling at the new puppy lexi and I am afraid she may turn on her and as lexi is so tiny she may get hurt. How do I get the dogs to bond and get used to each other your help is really needed thank you. By the way your videos are fantastic

i live in Taiwan.. I found a stray puppy when he was about 1 and a half months old alone on the street. Biting, for the first 2 weeks were horrible.. i had no idea how to stop it... and the taiwanese i met all decided to let him gnaw their fingers! Eventually, someone from canada recommended I use an egg. Every time he bit me she told me to give him an egg, uncooked. When he bites down the egg will crack and splash him. After two times he stopped biting me.... Do you think this method is ok?
@CherThinksPink I'm afraid that is bullcrap. My Pugs are fed a raw diet. Chicks, chicken, rabbit, beef, hearts, eggs, liverm kidneys, green tripe etc. They never get worms, they're in exceptional health and never have to go to the vets.
@angelmae3995 That is weird. Eggs are very healthy though. I feed my Pugs a raw diet. Including raw eggs. Raw whole chicks, raw rabbit, beef ribs, beef, heart, livers kidneys etc etc. They're never sick and in amazing health. One of my dogs did have seizures on a commercial diet and i was always at the vets. Until raw, so no a raw egg will not harm the dogi n anyway but it is a stupid method
@angelmae3995 I recommend that to be a bad idea eggs are good for dogs but only when cooked when the stray bites do a little scream cross your arms and turn side ways the dog will react to the noise and stop biting you make sure you show no contact but only for about 5-10 seconds
One of my dogs, Lacey, loves the squeaky tennis balls, and she is really good at catching it in her mouth. I wish my other 2 dogs would play too, but they don't play, when Lacey is there. If I throw the ball and call one of the other dogs to get it, Lacey is always the one to go for the ball.
All the clips I've seen about biting deal with pups biting hands. What about dogs play-biting with other dogs? I have a puppy and a 4yo dog. They adore each other and play, but the puppy tends to escalate from mouthing/play-biting up to very insistent biting at throat, ears, etc. The older dog tolerates it now, but the pup is a powerful breed. This will quickly become a dangerous habit. How do I allow playful fun, but discourage dog-vs-dog biting?
@rmcdaniel423 Good question! I have the same challenge. We have an 8 week old puppy and an 11 yr old doxie and 13 yr old lab. The doxie set boundaries right off the bat and they get along fine because the baby doesn't jump on him. My lab however, takes it for the most part and just looks at us for help. She enjoys playing with the puppy but like you said it quickly escalates for the puppy. We started putting the little one on a leash when she goes for the big dogand redirect anything else todo?
I like your style, in that "connecting" is never taught. It really works! Everything you hear these days focuses on being the Alpha and ensuring the dog knows he is at the bottom of the pack. I don´t like that idea and my dog doesn´t respond to it. Thanks for the new and effective point of view.
My sister has a mut we think might be a rat terrier/Chihuahua mix and he is usually a very sweet dog but if he is in one of our bed rooms and someone else walks in that wasnt already in the room (it doesnt matter WHO it is) then he will go ballistic and bark and growl, snap and bare his teeth but oce he sniffs you he stops... we've contemplated eye problems but they seem to be fine otherwise... do you have any idea what his problem might be?
I actually use my hands as play toys - first i taught her to eat out of my hand by holding it out and pulling food away if she bit my skin too hard. After that i started dancing my hands around her face and she would attempt to catch them, again if she catches to hard she gets scolded. Now if I engage her she'll do insane acrobatics to try and bite my hand, but when she does its incredibly gentle.
... thought she does bite other members of the family. hard.
This is great Zak. I actually never thought about phrasing it the way you have here. I have always had dogs and they are quite well behaved. I wish I could take all the credit for that but often the new dog learns from the dog already in the home. Just the same people think I am some sort of doggy guru (I am not) and ask me about when punishment is appropriate. I don't punish my dog, I like the "it's not about correcting, it's about connecting. Going to have to use that phrase. Thanks
@LizaLaney ive had my mini australian Shepard for 8 years and the only time he herds us is when we are letting him out to use the bathroom. Now every dog IS different just like people but i found that knocking him of the herding habit was easy enough... as long as they are not herding 'professionally' if you will. Now if i can just knock him of the barking habit he'd be a perfect dog lol
I just got a mini poodle pup a month ago, he is 3 months. Me and my girlfriend taught him to pee/poop outside, and fetch tennis balls. We just got him to fetch a disk this morning but not while it's flying.
Each morning we do a clicker session before eating, and he loves it. But does anyone know when a dog is old enough to "down&stay"?
it happens to me too, my corgi bites everybody when he first arrives the house , now he's 10 weeks old and pretty much just bite his own toys, I found it really helpful to play with them everyday, not long, 15 minutes or so, but constantly doing it , and by doing so my dog is more closer to me
How do I get my 1 year old Boston Terrier / French Bull dog mix from trying to bite every single person that tries to pet him? I'm going to get sued and the court is going to order him destroyed if he keeps this up.
hey,i have a labrador puppy(11 weeks)and he pays attention for a small while and then he just doesnt bother.. why does he do this because i would like to teach him your great tricks :(

zak i got a qeustion i have to red nose pitbulls and some times they fight wat can i do for thay can stop fighting. i also have a friend with a pitbull and i want them to get along wat can i do for thay cant get in fights.
I hv a 7 months old pit bull and I 've 2 year old shelties. They get along well most of the time but these day at the pit bull got bigger her bites got stronger. And sometimes even when they're playing I worry that my pit might accidently hurt them or hurt me while I'm trying to break them up.
your videos have been invaluable for both my self and my family by the time were finished the clicker training with our puppy i am sure he will be the best behaved dog in the park!
Hope to meet more people with your attitude to dog training
zak i have a qeustion my new puppy keeps chewing up cords!!!!my dog took mys sisterscurling iron then chewed it up and then she chewed up my tv cable wat should i do thought
also how do umake sure your dog doesn't bite things like my socks. Also if a dog does do bad things like bite the rug, how do u "punish the dog" because i have a mini aussie. Zack George is the best dog trainer
My puppy's biting stopped, but what about the barking? He'll bark whenever he sees people pass by. With dogs that pass by, his barks get 10 times stronger, louder, and they come more frequently. What is he trying to say and how can I keep him from barking so much?
My Pup is 12 weeks old and we like to squeak and tug on plush toys and chew on sticks and polar fleece - we're learning to fetch slowly, but he donsn't really find it fun yet. We also like to cuddle when he's sleepy (Soo cute!)
He has super sharp teeth but I'm glad I found this video coz it's exactly what I've been doing! makes me feel like it's worth keeping at it.
Thanks Zac
btw I love watching your training videos - can you post more tutorials??
My dog LOVES squeaky toys..he likes for me to throw his toys around the house and he goes on after them and brings them back..he can go on for hours and still feel the same excitment
my dog loves tennis balls! but i shouldnt leave them outside with her or anything like that? what is she supposed to play with then? she loves to chew on them all day much bettter than stuffed toys.
@zakgeorge21 zack maybe the person who worte that comment is not american , and englsih is not his or her first language, and i'm not saying is wrong to tell him or her.. to know hte difference between there, thir, and they're... I think you got his her point,, you got what he or she was trying to say ... also I'm not american so ..pardon me if there is any mistake in my writing( Great Job ,,ZACK .. I love the things you do to make a better relation between dogs and humans. CHEERS FROM PARAGuay
I watch TV while my dog chews with his toys on my lap. When he sees me sitting down, he immediately jumps to my lap, then quickly remembering that he needs a toy, and goes get one and comes back.
@keriwhite91 Ha you're funny. It's not like he has several years of dog training experience, does professional disc dogging, and has his on TV show about training dogs to do crazy tricks or anything. Right? Get educated before you embarrass yourself in front of 25,000 people.
i connect with my dog, through playing, and shes a aussie shepard mix to going for long runs and walks. grooming her cuz she loves to be groomed! and training. shes deaf so training her was a challange! but shes just so smart and learned very well! :]
Do you recommend the same approach for an older dog? I adopted a 3 year old labradoodle who will put my hand or arm in her mouth during our "massage" sessions (this is one way I bond with my dog, at least once a day for 10-15 min's I'll sit on the floor with her and pet/scratch/rub and brush her). She doesn't apply any pressure, and I feel like she's trying to show me affection, so I'd like to change it to a more appropriate sign of affection.
I got a 7 week old boxer/gsd mix but I visited him since before his eyes opened so he's well accustomed to seeing me. he already loves playing tug of war so we do that often and he loves being held like a baby though when he gets bigger that will be an obsticle lol. Besides tug-o-war he loves to wrestle but since hes young he spends most of his extra time sleeping
i only ask this not because it's annoying.... i find it quite cute....i'm just tired of stepping on her and i don't want to injure her seriously....the baddest thing i've done, is punt her like 4 feet away when i lifted my foot to take a step...she's fine, but i want to prevent that from happening.

Great thoughts, my personal philosophy is create a time for bitting, digging and other dog shit. But have you thought about not smoking a bunch of meth before dealing with your animals or making videos? You could try cutting back to crack, then maybe just doing coke lines possibly tossing a few in with a bowl or two of weed. Then cut back to weed. This should be a easy and strong reinforcement for you. Keep smoking weed dont ever stop. However for personal devlopment try women.
I put on the BBQ grill gloves on, and i wrestle my Border Collie. I lightly hit her legs, and then she quickly engages, biting the glove and hitting it with her paws. Doesnt hurt me, i got the gloves on. And the best thing is, the SECOND i take the gloves on, she is back to neutral. All i did was change behavior myself. Try it
well, if the plastic bottle is soft, and when you reap it in half, it's edges doesn't get sharp, what i mean't it you can't give it plastic bottles like Coke, Sprite, Fanta plastic bottles, cause they can rip it leaving sharp edges, and afterwards hurt themselves.
I have german shepard thats almost 4 months and she bites all the time I actually have scars and whenever you put your hand up in the air she flinches

...its teeth on something, ripping and tearing at things and be able to play.
Dogs aren't half as stupid as dog 'trainers'...

my cousins dog who is a maltese 8 yrs, loves to run around the house and almost in a play-like "tag" game with out the touching part. sometimes i try to pet him while he is in that play/chase mode, but he doesn't accept it, he only "sneezes, or goes into crouch or bow position, and begins to bark sometimes. then i try to run away while looking at him to encourage coming back. its very funny..i wish i could still reconstruct that to begin chasing a toy instead, and bringing it back to me...tips??

What can my friend do to train the Husky not to bite the other dog?

lala3ification 11 months ago 9

Puppys are born with teeth, and so don't teeth.
acopper1243 1 year ago
@acopper1243 Puppies aren't born with teeth. The teeth start to grow about 2 weeks after they're born, and their back teeth come out around 6 weeks old. Puppies do teeth.

Now I stop her immediately, even if she is doing some harmless play biting with Sudz or my other dog Jimmy. I feel guilty for doing that, because I know that dogs play that way, but I'm not sure when, or if I should put an end to that kind of playing. Can you tell me your thoughts on this Zak? Thanks.

Hi Zak,
I have 3 beautiful dogs.

When my dog is biting my stuff, he gets defensive and showing his teeth that he's about to bite when I am about to get it. Now I just distract just his attention by making startling sound noise say I am "angry" with some cat and sneakingly get my stuff back. He seem to forget my stuff every time. Hi Zak,
We run a rescue here in Illinois. We have a puppy that is about 3 months old. She has a huge biting problem. She has broken skin just for no reason. She acts as if she is on drugs, "run for your lives" behavior as I like to call it. What insight would you have to help us better train her so she can find her forever family?

i live in Taiwan.. Do you think this method is ok?
angelmae3995 1 year ago
@angelmae3995 uncooked eggs might give a chance of getting him sick. dont do that anymore because he could get poisoned.
CherThinksPink 1 year ago
@CherThinksPink I'm afraid that is bullcrap. My Pugs are fed a raw diet. Chicks, chicken, rabbit, beef, hearts, eggs, liverm kidneys, green tripe etc. They never get worms, they're in exceptional health and never have to go to the vets.
Wtflolyay 1 year ago
@angelmae3995 That is weird. Eggs are very healthy though. I feed my Pugs a raw diet. Including raw eggs. Raw whole chicks, raw rabbit, beef ribs, beef, heart, livers kidneys etc etc. They're never sick and in amazing health. One of my dogs did have seizures on a commercial diet and i was always at the vets. Until raw, so no a raw egg will not harm the dogi n anyway but it is a stupid method
Wtflolyay 1 year ago

How do I allow playful fun, but discourage dog-vs-dog biting?
rmcdaniel423 1 year ago

My sister has a mut we think might be a rat terrier/Chihuahua mix and he is usually a very sweet dog but if he is in one of our bed rooms and someone else walks in that wasnt already in the room (it doesnt matter WHO it is) then he will go ballistic and bark and growl, snap and bare his teeth but oce he sniffs you he stops... we've contemplated eye problems but they seem to be fine otherwise... do you have any idea what his problem might be?
royalfourever 1 year ago

I have a little 3 month old shiranian...how do i get her to stop coming and laying on my feet everytime i come home or try to leave?

i only ask this not because it's annoying.... i find it quite cute....i'm just tired of stepping on her and i don't want to injure her seriously....the baddest thing i've done, is punt her like 4 feet away when i lifted my foot to take a step...she's fine, but i want to prevent that from happening.

However for personal devlopment try women.

i heard that if you put frozen butter on your hand the puppy will lick your hand instead of biteing it

Try it

Nice technique Zak. My dog mouths more than bites, should my wife and I carry special "no biting" toys?

well, if the plastic bottle is soft, and when you reap it in half, it's edges doesn't get sharp, what i mean't it you can't give it plastic bottles like Coke, Sprite, Fanta plastic bottles, cause they can rip it leaving sharp edges, and afterwards hurt themselves.
