River grew up too quickly. He had this family imposed burden of having to take care of everyone and be a beacon of hope for the world. He was too young to sound so enlightened. Youth is about play, not solving financial and societal problems for adults. He was a savior who could not show weakness, as in drug use because it would undermine the expectations of his family, friends and hollywood.  But drugs had no expectations of him.
