  • I was a Nuke Electricians Mate 2nd Class on the Big "E" during Operation Sea Orbit, then returned to Newport News for refueling and overhaul. Following overhaul, on 6 July 1965 The Big "E" rejoined the fleet and sailed away from Newport News for the last time. On 2 December 1965 Commander Carrier Division 3 sent a message to SECNAV. That on the 2nd day of Dec 1965 at 0720H, the 1st Nuclear Powered Task Group of your your Pacific Fleet and the U S Navy engaged the enemy in South Vietnam.

  • Back during the cuban missile crisis an older sailor I worked w/, I believe was on the US Carrier Franklin. He said Ships were everywhere and that the Enterprise 1st Nuclear carrier was new. Kennedy came down to inspect the fleet briefly and was on board The Enterprise. My friend said the Franklin was going along average speed and that the Enterprise blew past them like they we're standing still w/ a rooster tail as high as the rear deck. Awesome.
