  • is it better to have ur pedal set loose or tight or in between? Does it really matter?

  • @MrT3m3 medium is best i think. this allows for adequate muscle build up while remaining playable ;)

  • thanks a lot man :D

  • 3:50 at 4:08 da best part

  • THANK YOU.

  • thanks!! this helped me alot i can double pedal the right way now thanks man!!

  • dude why do you even have a double bass pedal? haha!

  • best best video ever!

  • ok thank you :)

  • so when you slide your foot a couple centemeters, do you actualy press and hit it when you slide it back? plus my pedal is a little too small, so i have to kinda scrunch my foot a little. will this prevent me from doing the slide? and getting the 4 16th notes?

  • @headshot4455 yes, you do. i have often found that scrunchig was necessary when in the early stages of learning this, but eventally you find a way - nomatter the size of the pedal - to do it comfortably. Keep at it, you should find it works after some practice. If you continue to struggle, make a private video of it and PM it to me so i can give you more specific advice :)

  • could u show us doing the video with a shoe.

  • @mike12118 why? The only difference it makes is that its slighly harder to do.

  • 10,000 views! nice! :D

  • amazing !!! im a self taught drummer, and i sure as hell hope i can adopt this to my playing !!! brilliant mr !!

  • @MrPadds100 Thanks! good luck, and if you need any further help down the line - i'd be happy to advise. :)

check out my other videos and subscribe if you like ;)

  • Do I have to adjust my pedal to some specific configuration? I have an iron cobra...

Can you use this technique with any pedal in any configuration?

  • @igordbc I'm not really a fan of the Iron Cobra, at least not at high tension, because it tends to recoil right back onto the top of your foot quite painfully! I advise you to play around with some different configurations, though, to see what is most comfortable, and once you can use the technique with fluency with those settings, challenge yourself by making things tighter/looser in order to teach yourself flexibility.

    hope this helps!

  • vry useful tips

  • Great video, you really broke it down and showed the fundamentals. Guys, practice this technique where you can, waiting for a coffee, watching T.V, the office. Doing this without a pedal will strengthen your shin and calf muscles also increasing flexibility in your ankles. Remember to practice anything new really slowly and with a metronome and by slowly I mean 50,60 bpm, get that muscle memory building. Have fun with your drumming guys, if you don't enjoy it, then you shouldn't be doing it.

  • i cant get the hang of it

  • @TheMonstercell keep trying - watch the video repeatedly and suscribe for new videos (i plan on some new demos of the technique as early as next week), you will evetually get it. Have patience - this took me years to perfect and in my experience takes on average at least a few months to learn in 1 on 1 lesson situations.

  • Best heel-toe tutorial on youtube.

Would I be correct in saying that the motion of your foot while doing this technique is like a rocking chair? You know, like it's swaying forwards and backwards?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @robertej09 thanks! yeah i think you could describe it as a rocking chair quite accurately - but the ball of the foot does tend to remain (lightly) placed on the pedal surface at all times in that process of movement. (see 3:02 )

  • @Natataek looking at it again, it looks to me more like a piston pump ;)

  • @Natataek Well thank you very much. I'll be sure to try and learn this. I'll see if my foot isn't to big for my pedal haha. Thanks again.

  • Sir i can bounce it but i can turn it in the beat... how can i do?: im practicing now...

  • Amazing! Ur my idol... can u do some cover of slapshock or slipknot using single pedal?

    request plsssssssssssssssss....

    thank u!

  • @SMrabino Thanks! But i'm afraid i have to refuse the request to do Slipknot or Slapshot...it's really not music i enjoy, sorry! But do you know Strapping Young Lad or Devin Townsend - thats pretty extreme prog metal, and i'd be happy to do a cover from that material some time soon. In the mean time, i have a video of Overture 1928 by Dream Theater which i cover using one pedal - feel free to check it out and subscribe! ;)

  • Amazing! Ur my idol... can u do some cover of slapshock or slipknot using sing pedal?

    request plsssssssssssssssss....

    thank u!

  • Very nice tutorial! Good explanation and use of examples.

  • can you show a video where the in the first motion, the heel of your foot hits the bottom part of the pedal, coz that's pretty much where my heel is for the first motion coz of the size of my foot. can't get a bounce.

  • @bahusingit if you look carefully you can see that in this video my heel doesn't actually need to directly come in contact with the footboard for this to work. The ball of your foot is the contact point, with your heel being a kind of pump that transfers the energy of your falling leg to it. I don't think that if i made new video it would make anything much clearer. As i said, if you make a video of your effort and send it to me privately, i will be happy to review it.

  • i cant get a beat from doing the first motion. dammit. feet too big or pedals too damn small.

  • @bahusingit keep trying! if you don't make any progress you could send me a short video clip of your effort so i can judge what's going wrong :)

  • this would sound ridiculous if this were on a double kick

  • im just so stoked that i finally found a video explaining the most economic and efficient way to do this with single pedal....thank you man once again!!!!!!!!!!! made my day seriously lol...

  • @utsawin09 no problemo...glad i could help :)

  • ahh dude,.....this kicks ass ,

may a fat cheque from youtube come your way

  • @utsawin09 hehehe, i wish! i need quite a few more subscribers before that happens, so send this on to your friends! ;)

  • wow i've never thought to try doin it like that. I normally just slam my foot down and bounce off of my toe normally. but i'm definitely doing to try this...i have a gretsch pedal...is that gonna make a difference? I'm just sayin cuz those dw's are niiiice

  • @fngrbndrbackr cool, most pedals of any make/sort are usually fine - so long as you don't have the springs too tight or a built in foot stop at the top end of the footboard.

  • Dude, thank you very much! It helped alot.

  • i tryed this at school with the drum set there they where like wtf... lol awsome tut.

  • @ownerfate good on ya! enjoy ;)

  • this is by far the best lesson of this technique on youtube, time to practice me thinks

  • wow best explanation ive seen on here! thanks

  • this is great im getting a drum set 2day like the one in ur video here. im joining my friends death metal band and i only have the money for the basic set right now so i cant get the double yet. can this be used for a long duration with good speed like in most death metal songs?

  • @95Ghosts yeah, this can definately be used for long durations and at quite high speeds, as log as you practice it right. good luck and let me know if its working for you :)

  • Hey there great video!

I'm currently trying it out, but i'm having much difficulty trying to connect the double beats together.... it just sounds like de de de de de de even if i try to play stringing it as fast as i can. Any tips on how to make it more continuous?

  • @NovaEX1 thanks! make sure you're dropping the heel down while the ball of the foot is still lightly rested on the top end of the pedal. don't hit with too much force, but let the heel just drop. that creates the first hit. for the second one, quickly afterwards let your toes apply pressure at the tip. This should create the second hit immediately afterwards. hope this helps, but if not please don't hesitate to make a video of your efforts so i can see what's going wrong and give better advice.

  • @Natataek After trying it out for some time, i finally got the hang of it! Thanks a lot for your advice, its much more natural for me now! Now i can play -oo-oo-oo-oo-oo- but trying to make it -oooooooooo- is hard.

  • @NovaEX1 great! i'm glad its working for you! stringing it all together takes time and practice, but keep it up - you may get there sooner than you might expect :)

  • Comment removed

  • thank god there are genius' like you born, great vid:)

  • thank u so much dude u dont know how long i have been tryin 2 do this thanx =D

  • i dont understand ..

omg.. i tryin' really much, but cant get it so good..

Do i only need to practicing to make it better?

  • @WhyReality124 Can you tell me more specifically what you're having trouble with?

If you can't explain, try posting a video response and i'll try and advise you as best i can.

  • love your technic and how you kind of combined the hel toe, technic with the sliding technic for linking the doubles, really helpful thanks! :)

  • Nice O.o I can manage the fast doubles with easy (use them a lot in fast triplets), but linking them up that seamless is still beyond my ability. This should help me to overcome that problem, thanks!

  • thanks for this lesson i been tryin to do this for the longest im goin to keep practicing to make it better

  • @binkmouth post a video response when you get it down - that would be cool to see! (That goes for anyone trying to learn this!) Thanks for subrscribing :D

  • this vid is a perfect demonstration, i tried it out and it works perfect, i can now play double bass! cuz im a poor dude and i cant afford a dub pedal.

  • @emoassassin21 Thanks! i'm glad it's working for you :)

  • does it matter about the type of pedal??, because i have a terrible stagg pedal :( also how long should this take to learn

  • @blindrock1 hahah, i know how that feels, man. Stagg isn't the greatest - but that's actually the kind of crappy pedal i had to learn on myself! it eventually broke under the pressure, but not before i'd learned the technique :P

It really depends on how often and effectively you practice, i've seen students of mine pick it up within a matter of just a few weeks, while others have taken months to get there. The most important thing is to not give up!

  • Nice tech!

  • also, when working this technique, would you recommend starting slow and building up speed?

  • @jonah12321 it's difficult to play this slowly, you should think of it as if it were a double stroke roll with one hand. You're looking to bounce it and therfore you need some initial speed to achieve that bounce. Ideally, you should be practicing at speeds greater than that can be achieved by pure 'spasmodic' footwork.

  • @Natataek

i understand what you mean, thanks for the help

  • would u recommend a lighter or harder tension on the spring on the bass pedal

  • @jonah12321 my advice: medium... and try to get used to all different types of tension and pedal: that way you can perform on pretty much any kit :)

  • is it easier without shoes on?

can you achieve the same speed with shoes?

and would the shoes need to have no tread?

  • @matthendrixx22 Yeah it's definatley easier without shoes on (but with socks!)

Otherwise slim sports shoes with a low grip sole will suffice, but could hamper the speed slightly.

  • @Natataek cool thanx for your help dude

  • that is bloody awesome dude!!!

  • what size shoe are you? im a size 14, do you think you could still do this? would it be more difficult to pull of? would i have to drop the heel somewere on the board? or can you do it anywere? cheers lloyd

  • British Size 14?

    I'm a size 11 by U.K. standards, i think.

So first thing to do is make sure you're not wearing shoes. As you can see in the video my heel is right at the end of the pedal board, and i imagine you might even be able to go further back than that. Otherwise you might perhaps need to get a longer type pedal. Experiment a bit, and if you find something that seems to work, i'd be interested to know!

  • dude that´s incredible... but my feet are bigger than the footboard.. is that aproblem?

  • It shouldn't be a problem at all.

  • which is the name of your bass pad?

  • His name is susan.

just kidding: do you mean the bass pedal or the drum kit itself? The kit is Yamaha Td something or other, and the pedal is of an obscure make...it's not my equipment, but my brother in laws'. :P

  • wouldnt that just be heal toe technique??

  • It's similar to heel toe technique, yes.

  • Yep, deze techniek is echt heel erg handig! Het is ook beter dan double bass, das een beetje hersenloos rammen zonder echt een techniek te gebruiken. Maarja dat is natuurlijk mijn mening. :P

  • This is Def. as far as I have found the most clear video on how to keep a constant rythm on a single pedal. At the moment I've got the double hit but it's

-oo-oo-oo-oo- but should be -oooooooo- If that makes sense?

I'm off to Give it a try, Nice 1 mate. Where abouts in the U.K are you?

  • @tomymeeson: Thanks!

yeah i know what you mean...you're on the right track with the oo-oo-oo-oo, just keep practicing and it should smooth out quite naturally. Work on getting that gap shorter an d shorter and pretty soon your leg muscles will adjust.

I'm guessing you're going by my accent on the U.K. thing - i am british, but i'm also Dutch (dual nationality) and i live in the Netherlands now, though i go over to the U.K quite often.

  • PM'd you dude

  • Thanks alot mate! This was really informing, I'm going to try it out ASAP. I'm glad I subscribed, keep up the good work!

  • this is really well done. i've been looking for something showing heel/toe technique to get more than two hits.

but i'm still a little unclear on how to get the four hits. is it heel, toe, heel, toe? or heel, rebound from heel, toe, toe?

    thanks again!

  • Thanks for the comment!

It's heel toe, heel toe; but between the sets you shift your foot back very slightly to give room for the second set of HT's. Hope this helps!

  • weow, thx!

  • thanks for this. this is the most helpful double bass video on youtube.

    With a single pedal.

    ... awesome.

  • Thankyou! please rate :)

  • Very Good Job Man! helped alot could you reply on how to keep it going in further deatail so it sounds like 1+2+3+4+

  • that was helpful dude. thanks =]. i kinda knew that was the technique but was never sure. cheers!
