To me Roth drunk was better than when Hagar was sober. Hagar is good as a solo artist or with Montrose, but Hagar with VH is like oil and water. Just my opinion.

I disagree about the lyrics taking a back seat in VH songs. Some of the lyrics are rock epics now. Just the band is sooo great. Alex is a superb rock drummer, Michael is a ptretty good bass player with a great sense/talent 4 back up vocals and melodies. Eddie. Yea I understand bout' music from the hip section, raw, bitchen electricaly charged. But missing the lyrics an artist like VH put's in thier songs is really just for simpleton's. Oh and stage presence DOESN'T sell records!

Alot of bands have made great career's without any great stage presence or personna! Oh and I am very experienced playing professionaly all around So Cal. I guess it's all with what you like or are drawn to. Me I think lyrics ad and are just another canvass. Also I tend to like socialy conscience lyrics - but that is for thinking people.

Mostely the oposite. but-They have both gone back and forth and a few years back, when VH asked him to just jam and see, Roth blew the hole thing by going around telling every1 that a TOUR was for surely coming. So whatever. Hagar and Roth both have thier Great places, but 4 me Hagar is for smarter lifetime kinda music, Roth is more charged adolescence, wich you probably eventually grow out of. I admit both era's where great!

Remember, they had been on vacation for a couple of months with no rehearsals. Plus, they had been waiting all day long to play. Too much time on Dave's hands equals excessive drug and alcohol use. I know it's no excuse for his below-average performance, but that's what happened. Eddie totally screwed up the 1984 tour for me. He just stood there, barely moving like he was going to fall down. But he's my favorite guitarist and they were my favorite band. Disappointed? Yes. Leave them? Never!

You're right. I've been a Van Halen nut since '80. The real VH is with David Lee Roth, but I liked some of the stuff the boys did with Sammy as well (though I only own one of those albums).

That said, in this era the thing that bugged me was DLR being too drunk live to remember the words, and good luck getting a full melody line out of him. So yeah, his harmonica playing fell into this category as well. Too bad, because his bluesy voice is still one of the all time great rock vocals.

Hey everyone, VH is still great...In case any of you like live bootleg shows, there's an absolutely free website that has posted bootleg VH shows, ALOT for free. Some are great soundboard quality, some are so so. They're all fantastic in my book. From rare DLR era '74-'77 shows when VH was doing mainly cover tunes to the '04 shows with Sammy. All you have to do is register for free. Google search GUITARS 101 and you'll see Van Halen bootlegs and alot other bands too!!

From the very first time I heard Eddie do that damn pinch harmonic on the G string he had me hooked. That is the coolest sound and NOBODY has ben able to reproduce it like him. Nobody knows when to use it, just like the whammy bar. I hope Eddie gets his sh*t together and VH tours once again. In the beginning he said he'd play for 50 people, I'd be one of the 50 who would love to see that.
