Spike is one of those characters that see through the fakeness of people. Much like cordelia. They don't bullshit they tell it how it is. Regarless of who gets hurt. In no way am i doubting that spike felt genuine feelings for buffy. Im not. He did love her. HOWEVER, when he says "No you don't" he realizes that she is just saying it in a way to show appreaciation. He sees through the bullshit and doesn't buy it. Which makes spike more awesome for seeing thorugh people.

One of the saddest moments of the show. Spike is my favourite character and that sentence killed me *hugs him*. It was the death that hurt me most so I was really happy when Spike returned in Angel. I love the pairing, not exactly due to Buffy (I don´t like very much how she behaves often towards him except season 7) but due to how much Spike loves her (and the awesome character that he is, of course) I think that this moment made Buffy realize that she loved him back

My opinion, Buffy wasn't 100% sure when she said the I love you line. But when Spike replied, "No you don't, but thanks for saying it." I think that's when she knew she loved him. Right after he said it, it made her fall completely in love with him.

@falloutatdjp I agree. Buffy used Spike, she needed him, she made love with him, but she didn't love him. When he said that, it was so clear. It made her love him, and it made me fall in love with the character. Way to go Joss Whedon, for making a character that sticks with a person years and years after they thought they had let them go.
