Viktor Sukorov a former GRU Soviet Spy has written two books "Ice Breaker" and "The Chief Culprit" which shows that Germany's attack was preemptive. Stalin would attack the west in July 1941. If Stalin had done this he would have destroyed western christian civilization.

@fireball897 You're right, there was no reason to declare war on the US. The Japanese did not attack the USSR when Hitler did, why did he not do likewise after Pearl Harbor? The guy who said his biggest mistake was attacking Russia has never read much about Der Fuhrer. All he ever wanted was Russian and Polish land for "living space" for the German people. He didn't want war with the western powers, but their alliance with Poland forced his hand. He wanted the British as allies.

I have very high respect towards the caucasians because of WW2.

My grandfather who was there especially told me how hard the chechens were. He said it was not surprising that the chechens defeated the russians in the first chechen war.

Best soldiers in the Caucasus are the chechens. No doubt about that.

Hitler started late that year because Mussolini attacked Greece and got his ass kicked and Hitler had to invade the Balkans (which was not what he wanted to do) in order to bail Mussolini to save face, and because the Brits moved troops to Greece/Crete when Mussolini invaded Greece. This delayed the invasion of Russia. It was Mussolini who originally wanted to delay the war as his military was depleted due to the Libyan and Ethiopian Campaigns.

Dramatical strategic mistakes, one after the other decided the war. If the moustached guy would have followed the recommendations of his generals Stalingrad and Moscow for sure would have fallen, but Hitler used his panzers as a jojo... swinging from the north to the south... and detaching it from the Stalinggrad front...thank God that guy will be remembered as the most cruel and less gifted military leader of all times.

This was no mistake. Caucasus people really wanted freedom but were forced to fight in the Red Army against the Axis troops.

It is now known that Russia had plans to invade Europe, Hitler knew of this. So he beta them too it, he had no choice, the best defence is a good offence. Also they were only 7 miles from Moscow before they were halted by their greatest enemy - mother nature.

If they had attacked Russia a few weeks earlier they would have pulled it off. With that resources woul dthen havee been freed up for the west, and an increase in aircraft etc. May have turned out very different.

Hitler had other plans than his generals. His original plan in 1941 the "Urplan Barbarossa" was that the Heeresgruppe Mitte's (Army group center's) advance on Moscow should be used as a diversion to cover the main obejectives.

Most important for Hitler were Leningrad (Army group north), the Ukrainian recources and the Caucasian oil (Army Group South). Therefore after Army Group Center would have reached Smolensk his plan was that the advance on the Capitel should be stopped.

After that forces would be relocated to the "wings" of the German aussault to strenghten the attacks in the north and in the south. Hitler was completely right when he shifted some of his forces in August to the south which led to the victory in Kiev. After this battle it would have worked to reach the Baku oilfields and Stalingrad in the fall of 1941 because there was a 400 km gap in the soviet lines.

That was due to the fact that the Red Army believed in Hitlers bluff and wasn't prepared that an attack would follow in the south instead of a direct attack on Moscow. Even Shukow stated after the war that Hitlers strategy to attack were the Red Army was unprepared was completely right.

But soon after the victory at Kiev Hitler became ill. He wasn't able to debate and discuss with his general stuff properly so finally he had to concede and allow the further advance on Moscow. A fatal error !

So Leningrad wasn't taken, the gain in the south wasn't exploited -> all the power was concentrated on Moscow.

But at this time mud and snow prevented a fast advance, the soviets had build strong defences and all their elite troops were concentrated on there.

Hitler and his Generals missed a great oppertunity- to take the vital industrial oil of Baku in 1941 ! Without this the Russian war machine would have been useless. In 1942 Hitler renewed this strategy, but that was nearly too late....

As for Caucasus,finally germans had to run for their lives dropping behind heavy weaponry, etc. Lol! they did not look then as brave as in the video.
