  • totally if not absolutely amazing and without a doubt entertaining

i don't say i love many things but i do love your philosophy

    thoroughly enjoyed the whole show

    buzz

  • @bluetoad2001 Thank You neighbor..

  • @rpeek

gave my four string Silvertone to the neighbor girl.

i played it plenty after my dad passed away, kept me from going crazy.

thought i should pass it on to someone .

ever since i first saw you playing the gas can i figured i should build my own.

    just gotta get a neck.

    buzz

  • @bluetoad2001 I think you should. Its good for you..

  • this is really cool.

  • he looks so funny when he is playing the banjo :)

  • @lolxxWoWxxlol anyone looks funny playin the banjo lol, such a silly instrument and thats why i love it :D

  • Do you glue down the bridge

  • @byron151227 No. the bridge is held in place by the pressure of the strings and is supposed to be movable, so you can adjust it.

  • i like the sound!!!

  • I finished making my banjo a few months ago with this guide and I have barely put my banjo down. Cost me about £40 (im in the uk) to put together and I recommend it for anyone. Keep up the great work rpeek

  • @hammergascoyne That's awesome! Thank you very much, and glad it's workin' for ya!

  • I feel like im watching santa make me a banjo

  • @NathanTheBeast Ho Ho Ho...

  • this video really inspires me to make a banjo like this myself. I' ve got only one question... you putted a soundpost in it, but how does it work? Great videos, i really enjoyed them. Greets from the Netherlands!

  • @drummerkid001 The sound post isn't necessary. I don't use them anymore. It was something someone suggested.. I couldn't tell that it made any difference..

  • thats amazing! you are an incredible banjo player also!

  • @iGoshiix Thank You..

  • please santa can you make one for me for christmass.

  • gitte up

  • Lately your gas can banjos has turned me on. I´ve got a neck from a goodtime banjo and want to integrate a gas/oil can. Your "how to make" vids is very helpfull by the way. Thank you so much. Now I need to find a can and try to make one myself. :)

  • is there any advantages/disadvantage of putting the neck on the top of the can or the bottom?

  • @usaharleydog If you put the neck out the bottom the can sits upside down when you lean it in the corner of the bar between performances and looks funny... People will think you're weird...

  • @rpeek well, that goes without saying around here...

  • I have been watching your videos, really enjoy'em! Your banjo lesson vids were the only one I could understand. I am in my roughly third month learning clawhammer and its coming along slowly but surely!(thanks to you). I now want to build a gas can 'jo and the only question i have is about the "sound post", is it basically "free standing" inside the can? love your rat rod, by the way..

  • @usaharleydog The sound post isn't really even necissary. I put one in that can because someone recommended it, but since I haven't even been using them..

  • what song were u playing? im gonna make one of these and i like the song u were playing

  • @emazingbuddah That was just something I made up....

  • You are the coolest guy ever! This is awesome! Thank you!

  • it would be possible to make a banjo of a jerrycan?

  • @zundertbrian Yep.. Rebel Rods featured a guy that makes electric guitars out of 'em a while back.. Pretty cool..

  • @rpeek awsome , are you gonna make a banjo like that? , that would be awsome , at the end you have a complete collection of home made banjos !

  • I will make my own canjo when i get a can and a banjo neck and some strings and follow all of your instructions!

  • I'm still not clear how you managed to get the sound post in there. Did you slide it over any from the hole you made for it?

  • @stigandr5 Yes, but the sound post really didn't make much of a difference. I wouldn't even bother with it if I was you..

  • @rpeek but...... it stops the can from caving in

  • @talc89a It does do that... I don't usually mind if mine cave in a bit since the bridge winds up being so close to the bottom of the can, but that is a consideration..

  • well i just finished mine

    i love it !!

i messed up and did the neck a little crooked

so i cant go to low on the frets because the little ridge on the top of the can presses on the strings

ill have to redo the can part some other time

    anyway thanks!!!!!

  • @IEJP Most people don't play on that part of the neck anyway. I find that it takes a few tries to get it right. It's cool that you got yours done. Good for you!

  • This is realy cool. I have a neck from an old beginner guitar Could i use that and put a nut at the 4th and 5th fret. I play the guitar and mando, I always wanted to try the Banjo. Grate video!

  • Amazing!! How did you get the tunning nob on the wood for the 5th string?

  • @248chickenbutt There's 10 videos and it's in there. Just watch 'em..

  • your a beast lmfao

  • love these videos ,and am gonna try and make one of those. If you ever wanna know how to makea a bow (archery) out of old pick axe handles check out my videos i think you might be interested.

  • These videos are awesome. I'm gonna start looking for a gas can and a neck right now. Thanks for doing this and sharing your knowledge with a 22 year old kid like me!

  • @CupOmilk You're younger than I was when I started. By the time you get to be an old fart like me you'll be an old hand at this stuff.. Have fun with it and good luck...

  • @rpeek

Greeting from a 15year old from Iceland.

Thanks to you mate Iceland is going to get it first Can-jo.

Also want to thank you for your lessons learning Clawhammer from you and I already learned Over The Rainbow from you.

    Great video as always.

p.s I gotta grow a beard quick for maximum success in banjo playing

  • @kexbiti Cool! Good plan. The beard is definately the secret of success.. hahahaha..

  • so how much would a banjo like taht could cost?

  • @albertodreamboy Depends on how cheaply you can find all the parts..

  • lol nice ...bt that was a little scary at the end.."muhahahahah" lol Scary laugh. lol but nice

  • you should sell these on ebay!

  • @1trentcoleman1 Yea but then I'd have to quit my regular job!

  • Thank you for passing your knowledge to the younger generation!!! I found a real mean old can on ebay with warning signs all over it!!!

  • @VinnyMartello That's wicked cool!

  • So I was watching this vid n my neighbor came in and he heard your voice from the other room and he says "oh that fell'ers a Cajun" ...so I must ask?

  • @brummeister1 Nope, Just a Georgia boy, but not so far from them that I ain't rubbed shoulders with 'em a time or two..

  • @rpeek I didn't think so..I grew up in Biloxi, MS... now I live in Chilly Wisconsin and so does my neighbor..so I wonder how he got his Cajun language knowledge cause there's none hereabouts... :) I do miss the south but I love the sub-zero temps so...

  • @brummeister1 I'm with you.. don't miss the heat a bit.. hahahaha..

  • I'm just setting out to build my first cookie tin banjo. Your series was absolutely inspiring and helpful. Thanks!

  • how much did it cost in total?

  • It cost as much as it costs to buy a can, a neck, a set of strings, a bridge and tuning pegs. In the case of this one I also modified the neck, converting it from a 4 string to a 5 string.

  • awesome vid man love to jam sometime;)

  • has a nice sound to it!!!

  • haha ur good at playing it

  • I can't even change a broken string LOL. You play very well too! Nice video, enjoyed that! I like the tone on the gas can better than on the traditional kind myself.

  • Just amazing! Very well done. A pleasure to watch, thanks for posting. I'm inspired to give this a shot. I wonder if an old tambourine could work, if a back was placed on it??

  • Yep, in fact, there's a guy on ebay that sells banjos made out of tamborine's with the little bells left in. Haven't heard one play, but I know they'd make a good banjo. You don't need a back, just a head. Let me know how it works out.

  • @rpeek

Will do. Have sent a message with a link for you. My previous comment attempts seem to have failed!!

  • luvd the laugh <3

  • what size of cans are you using?

  • One gallon..

  • just awesome!

  • I would if you was down the road merry xmas to you and your lady

  • Thank You!. Yea, I like makin' these things. Hopefully these videos will make it easier for other people to make 'em too..

  • i like that banjo. Nice job!

  • I got a friend who's ex-boyfriend once built a stand up bass from an old car's gas tank.

    Cool video

  • Yea, there's a band called "Split Lip Rayfield" that has a stand up base made out of a car gas can.. They're awesome..

  • Thanks for posting this series of videos. I'm hoping I can either buy or build a banjo in the new year. We'll see how the funds go.

    AWESOME as usual!

  • That's a nice one. Did you get the Phillips 66 can for another one?

  • Nope.. Didn't meet the reserve, sent an email to the owner and got no response.. No problem though, I've got quite a few cans collected up. The necks are actually harder to come by, but I've located one.. I'll get to making another one for me when I catch up around here..

  • oh man, she sounds amazing.. thanks rich you did a great job. I'll see you saturday ! playin em is gonna be great

  • No rush.... I'm havin' fun playin' it.. hahahaha

  • Mighty fine looking and sounding oil can banjo. Nice job! You the man! rpeek You the man!
