comparing Apples and Oranges guys. And in reference--indie to mainstream, Arcade Fire has kept their integrity after their success. Let me pose a question, In whatever artistic endeavor you have chosen, wouldn't you want more people to experience your expression. Arcade Fire does not need to have hit singles. Top 40 does not mean artistic accomplishment.
Wait a minute, I think they already have more than three recognizable tunes......AF wins. I love their musical subjectiveness as well, They have my vote, and support all the way. Blondie, you guys were great in your era, but suggesting that AF ripped this is ludacris to say the least. Dig deeper, you will see that most music today has already been done in the past. The difference being the instruments and the topics, being relative to our lives and syncing with the present times.
There are similarities in chord structure, u got that, however, Arcade Fire is far more talented than Debbie Harry avec Blondie ever was. 1. AF has way more brainpower and there is strength in numbers my friends. 2. AF has the versatility of 2 vocalists, one that is a soprano, awkward and pround, the other a falsetto/tenor. 3. I am willing to bet AF is not all f'd up on cocaine, so they should stand the test of time, and produce more than three hit songs in their career span.
Cosmic coincidence or on purpose? There's only so many chords and melodies in rock & roll so I'm a believer in cosmic coincidence from a logical point of view. I also made a chord set that happened to be the same as another song once by accident so I've seen it happen.
I was like 8 or 9 ys.o., when "Heart of Glass" came out. Years later I wondered if the writer of H.O.G. got the title seed from the spaceship the "Heart of Gold".
Like a strange sex site in the sweaty armpit of the intraweb, this hybrid scratches an itch only real perverts and doctoral thesis papers can truly taste.
AF was going for an early 80s New Wave sound and Blondie helped set the template for the music of that period. When HOG came out everyone was caught up in whether it was rock or disco, but they overlooked the heavy New Wave elements of the song, the way the synthesizer and guitars were keyed into the drums and the drum machine.
@docbrophy I did eventually notice that, but still, nice video. I also found their website and all the other goodies there, so thanks for the referral.

I, for one had written off Arcade Fire as a bloated, having no incentive to innovate- sort of band until I, heard this song.
The lyrics are nearly perfectly composed.
