solbrand- whatever makes you feel better. This is over 3 years old, taken in Paris while studying art. I've graduated and now have a great job in my field. Best of luck to the sculptor. Also, the clothing of an "artist" is a J. Pollock reference, which is the original black shirt and jeans. Everyone should dress how they want to AND know the history behind movements in style, artistic or otherwise.
Also, just because you're an art student doesn't mean you need to dress like one.
My friend is a sculptor who is attending an ivy league art school, and he dresses in sweat pants while creating his heavenly masterpieces. You just dress like a clown and probably go to a clown league college where you make clown art.
Mostly I've seen reproductions in books, of course... the actual colors are dazzling and the sheer size of those scroll paintings is overwhelming. Brought to you by his landlord Nathan Lerner, the (no kidding) inventor of the sponge mop and the bear-shaped honey bottle. He told Henry they found it and he said "Too late now!" He asked what to do with it all and Henry said "It's yours."
well even if you put it up just for documentation that you were there i still have to thank you for posting this. until his art makes a tour into my town this is the best view i have of his paintings up close. once again....thanks
Someone else had mentioned that I needed to slow down- thanks for understanding! I think people forget that it's not allowed to document like this in most galleries. Another patron had gotten kicked out for doing exactly what I was doing! Hope you enjoy it- I wish I could see his work again and am looking forward to going back to Paris in 2009!
I don't think he really had much of a choice considering he was dead after they put these on display. I'm sure he didn't want them to be public, but there's really no use now.
Henry had some pithy things to say in his book about what would happen when all this was found and pored over by "curators" who would speculate on what it all meant and probably get it wrong. Hee! Jay
i don't think so snapdragons. I really thing it was a french gallery made one, which doesn't do much good I suppose! I would love to check out 'in the realms of the unreal.' is that just about his work, or his work and others?
I wonder what Henry would think of this- his work being shown in Paris! I gotta hunch he though future generations would appreciate his art- though that is not why he made it.
I don't know! I think that's an excellent question. the fact that I was able to see it was pretty interesting as well. I wish that I could get my hands on a real copy of the documentary playing in the other room, but i wasn't paying much attention to it when I really probably should have been. Oh well, life right?
Not to be just silly pop culture bufoon ... but check out Natalie Merchant's song about Henry Darger on her CD "Motherland" ... its haunting and beautiful.
darger's on of my favorite artists. i'd love to see the documentary about his work. if anybody has a copy can you pls post it on youtube?i'm sure michael jackson would love darger's works...
You know, that's some pretty good guerilla photography. I was with a group and we almost got thrown out of the "BODIES" exhibit for doing our thing. HEY did you guys hear about this biographer of Henry Darger who speculates that HE killed that little girl that sparked the Vivian Girls stories. I don't believe that...
I envy your experience. Henry Darger's art is truly a gift to mankind. Have you watched the documentary " The Realms of the Unreal ?" It is very well done, and responsible for my introduction to Henry Darger. Thanks for the post. Where are the Vivian Girls when we need them so much today ? !!!! : )
i was in Paris, and unfortunately the camera I have is a digital polaroid. Documenting the work is illegal and there was no way I could have moved any slower without getting caught and thrown out.
Enjoy as much as you can and a bad video taping can NOT do this artist justice in any way.
ashtray crotch is my kind of girl...into weird art AND bat shit gorgeous!

I don't think Henri really thought ANYONE else would see it... just like his book.. he didn't write it to be read.

There is an amazing documentary of Henry Darger's work called "In The Realms of the Unreal." I think a preview of it can be found on google video.
