the games may have gone ahead in graphics but in sound they didnt even stayed on that level its so hard to hear actual tunes in nowdays games , they stack them with songs that have no real relation to the game and that was it , exception is skyrims ost , DOVAKIN !
i have the PAL version of sonic cd and the first zone sounds slightly different that the one on this video.? in my opinion the Pal version seems better
I´m from Europe, but my Sonic Cd I had on my computer was a US one... and thus I like those themes the best. Thay have that speed-thing around them. Plus when I recently tried out the pal version I lost concentration when boss-battling... wrong theme entirely! So US version for me. But you know... I´ll get both versions... for sure.
I think I prefer the US version, but maybe it's because that was the first version I owned back in 1993. There are a few tracks I really like on the JP/PAL version, though. I own the US and JP versions.
F.Y.I.: "NTSC" does not mean "US version". NTSC is a screen resolution standard used in BOTH the US and Japan. So, technically, "NTSC version" could refer to either the US or Japanese versions. In this case, the 2 NTSC games have different soundtracks (with the NTSC-J version having the same soundtrack as the Euro version).
both musics are ok, but don't think either sound like a Sonic ost. They should have used some familiar beats and expanded on the like Nintendo had done with Zelda and Mario. This just sound like you turned on a pop station in the 90's and doesn't age well unlike the original Sonic 16bit chip tunes imo.
ive got a question. I am getting the sonic gems collection game (pal) and before that i got sonic mega collection (pal) and when i played sonic 1 on SMC it was slow and the music was also slow is this gonna hapen with sonic gems collection on sonic cd ?
Spencer Nilsen did NOT compose the Japanese soundtrack, Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata did. The reason why the US soundtrack is, in most people's opinions, worse, is because only ONE person composed the US soundtrack, not 2, and Spencer had less time.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't David Young also composed the soundtrack with Spencer Nilsen and an additional composer Sterling on the US soundtrack?
Oh wait my bad, David Young was Co-composer and Co-arranger for Nilsen. But the thing is not all tracks were composed by Nilsen. Track such as Collision Chaos, Metallic Madness and the Boss music was composed by Sterling...that's what confuses me.
Although most of the japanese songs are better, you have to admit some US songs fit much better. For example: Tidal tempest bad future, boss, invincible, speed shoes etc.
Actually, Spencer Nilson only composed the american soundtrack. The japanese/european soundtrack was composed by two guys called Naofumi Hataya & Masafumi Ogata. The past tunes from the japanese version were kept in the american one which technically means that Nilsen only composed 3/4 of the american soundtrack.
Personally I like both soundtracks, but I think the US tunes are too mellow for a Sonic game (Metallic Madness especially). I also rate the US soundtrack lower for not having its own PAST tunes. Otherwise, I like them both.
PAL FROM HERE TILL TOKYO ...

@videogameobsession I agree! both soundtracks have some nice music, but not sonic style.
Thanks for the comment!

@videogameobsession But its not 16bit, its on a cd
supershadow64ds 11 months ago
@supershadow64ds Yes, I know. That's what I was saying! The 16bit chip tunes (cartridge based music) is better imo.
videogameobsession 11 months ago
@videogameobsession I dunno, sure 16-bit was good, I think Sonic CD and Sonic the Fighters/Championship had it beat.

ntsc is the best

I think that the pal songs are way too camp happy and the american version is all asfsiudg phiaug.
Hard to explain but it's some odd shit that makes them both sound awesome.

Both are great IMHO. Worth owning both releases.

Set your TV to 60hz and the game will go a little faster, not much, but you will hear the difference.
Megadrive (EUR/PAL) runs in 50hz, and Genesis (U.S./NTSC) runs in 60hz.
Therefore the Genesis games will run a little bit faster then the Megadrive games.
You can do the same thing on SGC, but the music in PAL-SGC isent the PAL Music, its the NTSC music, and Therefore i dont like SGC...
Stupid Sega to not include the PAL music...
duscha55 2 years ago
That's why I got the Japanese version of Sonic Gems imported and play it on the Gamecube with the Freeloader disc.
Full speed Japanese version and soundtrack, plus it comes with the whole of Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3 which were all cut from the Western release.
(As a side note, NTSC is a tad confusing to use here, since both Japan and the US are NTSC.)
bryUK 2 years ago
I personally like the NTSC version better, but to each their own I suppose.
At least all the past music is the same.

Nope, only Spencer Nilsen and Pastiche for the music.

I never knew that! So Spencer is not the genius behind the boss music.

Im sorry to say, but i think all the European/Japanes music is better then the American version.
except for the intro and ending music, they are both great in the American version.

I agree with you, some of the Japanese and the US has it's highs and lows.

i've got sonic gems collection and for some reson its got the NTSC version of Sonic CD
CornishCreamtea07 3 years ago
i know, i've also got Gems collection (on Gamecube) and the music in the Ntsc version isent that good.
duscha55 3 years ago
in one way yes because i can hear Sonic Boom but in another way no because the level music is better in the PAL version
CornishCreamtea07 3 years ago
Ntsc palm tree panic doesn't sound like that on sonic gems
ultm8ninja 3 years ago
The Japanese version has the same music as the PAL version, but the PAL version runs on 50 FPS, and the NTSC and Japanese versions run on 60 FPS.

That why the names on the files are named (European Soundtrack).
But you have to say, the Eu stardust songs are much better then the US versions.
