What people don't realize is that the human voice doesn't stop going through puberty until your late 30s or early 40s. That has been scientifically proven! And during those times the voice can dramatically change. Regular non-singing individuals don't notice these changes as much as singers. Because they don't use the voice like a singer does. Any little change and it affects everything. Especially, someone like Mariah who is known and always expected to sing those high notes flawlessly.

I love how all the guys in the front row got so excited in the middle of the performance and started dancing and shouting approval at Mariah - she really got into the song and so did the crowd. Amazing. Love it. The only downside of this performance is that she chose not to hit the series of the high notes ending this fantastic song - this is because at that time, the critics slated Mariah for overdoing it with the high notes; and I'm sure Tomy advised her to keep it slightly under control.

@jameld55 its in a different key than the original recording; that is probably why she sounds different to you. Even people as amazing as Mariah have to take it easy; especially considering how much she traveled. It takes a toll on the voice.
