Learn the proper (official) Bahasa Indonesia then you can communicate with almost everybody in Indonesia and Malaysia (if not South East Asia).

You can learn Indonesian (Jakarta style) slang but don't depend on it coz each region has it's own slang.

Indonesia has 300+ ethnics with distinct languages. But with Bahasa Indonesia, you can interact with most of them easily. It's a language of unity (literally) in Indonesia, very useful when you trip around the country.

I used to know Indonesian, but I forgot it about a year after I moved back to America. Plus I was only about 8 when I moved back and about 1 1/2 when I went there. I really want to relearn it, but its somehow hard for me to relearn it.

agree, indonesian is one of the easiest language to learn, because its very consistent. there is no long and short vowels. most, if not all, vowel only have one sound (except for e). my wife is british, and she can speak fluent english, in fact daily we converse in indonesian

indonesian is so damn easy .. cuz i'm indonesian but i also speak french and english *lol i'm still 12* , but yeah i like to learn .. and yet i find indonesian to be the easiest cuz we don't have like perfect tense or like past tense or any conjugasions that are too hard .. so that's why it's SO easy ..

nah kalo dipakenya bahasa melayu, ada dua akibat:

1. bisa ambigu, dikirannya itu bahasa untuk etnis melayu (riau) saja

2. nanti bisa memicu konflik, soalnya dianggap menganak emaskan etnis melayu saja, sedangkan indonesia mencakup beribu2 suku yang masing2 punya bahasa dan sebutan sendiri. jadi lingua franca nya ya disebut bahasa indonesia, supaya benar2 tercapai tujuan bahasa persatuan itu sendiri (mempersatukan etnis2 yang berbeda bahasa)

No, Indonesian alphabet is all in Latin. It's also easy to spell and write it.
