The last time I ever saw the original band members together was in '80 and they used this song for the five man guitar jam. I'll never forget the sight.....
Spectres = amazing. Amongst other things - stunning album cover! I never got the emphasis put on getting an emmy or an oscar or being in the R'n'R hall of fame. Nothing beats being honoured by the fans - and BOC (plus Kiss, Rush, Yes - all the bands listed) have heaps of that. So many awards just seem like trumped up medals to mad egos. The people's support, admiration and love are what counts. Plus - countnubian3 you did great on this track and you have every right to be happy about it!
mutation is so sloppy compared to everything that came later such as this. i've seen them perform this live and they must rehearse these vocal parts like no other rock band might, cause they aced it. i was posting earlier about the hidden beach boys tribute in this song. 1st 2 lps are almost psych-rock. and probably their best, though there is real genius on the later stuff.

@BENFICA60 I agree with you on all EXCEPT The Ramones are about 10,000 times better than boring ol' Traffic. Traffic is one of the worst bands of all time! The Ramones DEFINITELY belong in the Hall. If you ask me the 3 most glaring omissions are Uriah Heep, Vanilla Fudge, and Iron Butterfly. Those 3 are much better than the bands you listed.
@BENFICA60 ramones and the sex pistols influence are seen daily. I cant walk anywhere without seeing a punk wannabee hipster who listens to the latest punk copy cat band. I love dozens of BOC songs, and find 30 or 40 of them to be outright stupendous, but there are some, such as this, that are so mind-bogglingly great that when you listen intently they just leave you speechless.
its just, mulling everything over in my mind, BÖC is the thinkin mans band, and if you say that homosexuality is an obvious connection in the song, then, being the thinkin mans band, why would it be about, homosexuality. I think they would want you to dig deeper than that.. dont you?
@Drizzlerman Dude you got a serious imagination. Get your hearing aid checked out. It's a gangbang with a wanton child. Saying its a unwanted child is like saying Bad moon rising saying "There's a bathroom on the right" BOC uses adjectives I doubt very much they would use such a boring word as unwanted.
The lyrics are crystal clear. "a wanton child, too dead to care, for each to find their pleasure as they might". They're bikers. The girl is drunk/stoned off her ass. It's a gangbang.
This song is a strange combination of awesome, and embarrassingly goofy.
@drizzleman. interesting concept. i guess any music that invokes thought process is a good thing. BOC good for that. My opinion is the child was passed around with people either kicking his ass trying to straighten him out. Teenagers are always to deaf to hear.
only way you would connect this song to homosexuality is if you were looking for it or wanted to connect "having pleasure at night" and imidiate connection to homoeroticness.... eh to each his fukin own i suppose
I'm just saying it barely mentions any others besides an 'unwanted child' no women there really, now tell me how isn't that a bit queer. I'm only saying there are hints of homo eroticism in the song, not fully or blatant. But also the use of a female vocal backing the male narrator at the reflective passage seems to imply there being a duel of natures of male and female. There is something more deeper going on in the tale.
still but this child is going to take to care that each of the men would find his pleasure. However that may work out or actually be done. The way they're passing this child around seems that it is unwanted by it's caretakers i.e. an abandoned child sold to these bikers in a shady business deal.
@roddergreg "Wnaton" means sexually promiscuous; usually a woman. "Child" is just hyperbole in this case - she's a young prostitute who has probably passed out during a gang-bang.
@ecnalubma696969 bull-shit, General Winston Churchill used the term Wanton, and of course it did not mean anything sexual, as the term "Wnaton" means simply and plainly somebody wants something, but of course your musical expertise points you in the direction of a gang bang....
@Bojoe777NaBl 'unwanted child to take to care that each would find his pleasure as he'd might...' Is what it sounds like is sung, which makes me think of some underage prostitute to service all of these careless morbid leather clad bikers
@Drizzlerman so a female vocal to you means a faggot? i find it very strange that you keep going on about homosexuality and homosexual metaphors. are you a fucking faggot? his light voice at that point in the song does not symbolize a female vocal. you're over narrating and connecting again man. just take the song as it is, instead of trying to twist it to your fucking concepts.
@thegreatasura no I'm saying it represents a conflicting of natures of masculine and feminine, not particularly homosexuality but a conflict with identity. yew stewpid fugging azzhole
Man dizzler.. like great said. Shut the Fuck up and Enjoy the damn song. Ur annaly'in that shit too much son, smoke a joint, sit back and shut ur brain off. Who cares what it means. or whats going on. Its a good song. Fuck sakes.. people who over analayze things are just... fucked soemt imes... Seriously. fucked... Go drink a beer, take that stick outta ur ass and enjoy the music. might do u some good!
by fluff I mean how stupid worm eaten brained poofters dozily listening to a tune without even grasping the sheer inventiveness of the lyrical tale and the combination of musical passages and layering to carry the epic wording. Mostly just how if you have a vivid imagination you can envision all of this drama the song carries and with SOMEONE to explain it better it becomes more than just 'fluff' and a true piece of art carrying, heavy. relevant, stimulating themes and haunts one like a spectre.
@Drizzlerman unfortunately, that explanation is only relevant to you, as you're the only one fucked up enough to think that. the rest of us enjoy the song without trying to apply a huge lyrical meaning to it in the hopes that it might bring something into our life. enjoy the music and shut the fuck up
@Drizzlerman you don't need to apply a huge superiority complex to make people think you understand the song better, go fuck yourself. the world is full of enough pretentious douchebags.
rippled dunes calm and surreal are symbolic of the female form and the glint of a solitary shaft of chromium steel being the lone male phallic symbol surrounded by a vastness of femininity and inability to interact with it's surroundings therefor being left to symbolize male dominance as a fading feature of society.
This song is like an ancient Greek/Roman orgy int he desert of Nevada or someplace near there, and then it turns into a gladiatorial free for all and they all die because they are all wasted and there is nothing else for them to do in the world that is increasingly becoming more flaccid and feminine, and less suitable for tough biker leather and chain wearing types.
idk? Maybe you don't think enough to see the song beyond beer, motorcycles, and partying. The song is about what I stated and that is good enough. The song does seem to have a clash of masculine, feminine, gay, straight clashing possibly hinting at the reason why this biker gang all ended up fighting and leaving this world behind.notice how a female vocal is added at 3:31 and 3:42 when he sings 'and I' this song is a rock opera-ish singing a story like a ancient Greek/Roman epic poem.
so, that's the point you tard. To get beyond the fluff and see the reality which is revealing towards a historical point of view and a understanding of good storytelling and analysis to make connections that reveal something profound and that is the treasure of enjoying art. You stupid fast food nation play doh brained asshole
why do i still not believe you ppl... guess I just cant accept the fact that this song is about.. homoness.. but dont get me wrong i have nothing wrong with flamers, I just think a song about ummm Golden age of leather.. and Bikers.. but I guess that is just some random bs that popped into my mind. peace
On a side not back in those days the on;y places you could get leather outfits and collars and such was in gay shops, Eric Bloom admits to this. Also maybe this song is about pederasty, " And passed from man to man- unwanted child to take to care that each would find his pleasure as he'd might..."
Well, what is your take on the song after an analysis of the lyrical themes and references I mean is this song just fluff or is it getting at something deeper than the superficial themes of just motorcycles, beer, and partying?
I saw them at Cobo Arena in Detroit during this tour. That was to this day the GREATEST rock show EVER!! Nothing I saw before or since has ever been able to match it. And they did this song superbly!
I gotten the feeling this song is slightly homoerotic in some of the mood, vibes, and word choices, phrasing of certain aspects in the lyrics which are too masculine as to not be suggestive of such.
@Drizzlerman ...........what the hell?? either you are smoking too much kush, or are searching too deep for a meaning. Sure BOC is called the thinking mans group for a reason, but, this song is about the golden age of leather, and talks about the good ol` days, and at the end, "AND THE GLINT OF A SHAFT OF CHROMIUM STEEL" suggests no Homoeroticness involved.
One reason I am listening to this song is because my father use to listen to it in the 60's and 70's early early boc, the other reason of course being they just flat out ROCK!!! Im 18 and they are one of my favorite bands and I freaking hate how I only hear Dont fear the reaper or Go Godzilla on the radio, PLAY SOME SPECTERS AND MIRRORS!!! SOME AGENTS OF FOURTUNE TOO!!!!!
This song is the Beach Boys on speed with added menace - it starts out with West Coast surf vocal harmonies tied to biker-gang lyrics, and just gets better!
Incidentally, the boys' choir singing on thre fadeout previously performed with Van Morrison on one of his LP's (Hard Nose the Highway)
This is the single best album by BOC at the height of their creativity, when you listened to the ENTIRE sides of the album, the way it was meant to be. 1977 was such a good year, with BOC and Zeppelin touring the same summer!
Classic stuff at its finest . BOC Has been jamming me since 72 . And they are still kicking it out . if you get a chance i highly advise you see them Live in there purest form . UnFuckinglybelievable show .
I don't care what anyone says, but this track soars waaaay above most so-called "great" rock songs that the "music experts" usually mention. There ain't much that can compare to this.
@cuttlefisch My Friend, You know exactly what your talking about!!!!!!! My friend and i used to raise our beer everytime the song began!!! He's been dead 21 years know!!! The greatist music Ive ever heard!!! God Bless!!!! Scott
Could be part of the reason Danny Miranda was asked to leave BOC and join the pit orchestra at the Vegas "We Will Rock You" show and later to assume John Deacon's spot on the Queen/Paul Rogers tour/album
Dude, this was MY drinking song in high school. Drank many many a beer toasting to the Golden Age of Leather. And, I may have thrown up some too... but I'm no light weight.
This is one of the truly great songs from a Golden Age of rock and roll! The musical changes perfectly accent what are some awesome story-telling lyrics.

I'm only saying there are hints of homo eroticism in the song, not fully or blatant. But also the use of a female vocal backing the male narrator at the reflective passage seems to imply there being a duel of natures of male and female. There is something more deeper going on in the tale.
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
I think its wanton child:
undisciplined; unmanageable a wanton child
roddergreg 1 year ago
still but this child is going to take to care that each of the men would find his pleasure. However that may work out or actually be done. The way they're passing this child around seems that it is unwanted by it's caretakers i.e. an abandoned child sold to these bikers in a shady business deal.
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
@Drizzlerman They're raping a very drunk or drugged-out young woman - possibly a child prostitute.
ecnalubma696969 1 year ago
@ecnalubma696969 Uh huhhh. I was thinking something along those lines
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
@roddergreg "Wnaton" means sexually promiscuous; usually a woman. "Child" is just hyperbole in this case - she's a young prostitute who has probably passed out during a gang-bang.
ecnalubma696969 1 year ago
@ecnalubma696969 bull-shit, General Winston Churchill used the term Wanton, and of course it did not mean anything sexual, as the term "Wnaton" means simply and plainly somebody wants something, but of course your musical expertise points you in the direction of a gang bang....
Bojoe777NaBl 1 year ago
@Bojoe777NaBl 'unwanted child to take to care that each would find his pleasure as he'd might...' Is what it sounds like is sung, which makes me think of some underage prostitute to service all of these careless morbid leather clad bikers
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
@Drizzlerman so a female vocal to you means a faggot? i find it very strange that you keep going on about homosexuality and homosexual metaphors. are you a fucking faggot? his light voice at that point in the song does not symbolize a female vocal. you're over narrating and connecting again man. just take the song as it is, instead of trying to twist it to your fucking concepts.
thegreatasura 1 year ago
@thegreatasura no I'm saying it represents a conflicting of natures of masculine and feminine, not particularly homosexuality but a conflict with identity. yew stewpid fugging azzhole

Man dizzler.. like great said. Shut the Fuck up and Enjoy the damn song. Ur annaly'in that shit too much son, smoke a joint, sit back and shut ur brain off. Go drink a beer, take that stick outta ur ass and enjoy the music. might do u some good!
suckit116 1 year ago
by fluff I mean how stupid worm eaten brained poofters dozily listening to a tune without even grasping the sheer inventiveness of the lyrical tale and the combination of musical passages and layering to carry the epic wording. Mostly just how if you have a vivid imagination you can envision all of this drama the song carries and with SOMEONE to explain it better it becomes more than just 'fluff' and a true piece of art carrying, heavy. relevant, stimulating themes and haunts one like a spectre.
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
@Drizzlerman unfortunately, that explanation is only relevant to you, as you're the only one fucked up enough to think that. the rest of us enjoy the song without trying to apply a huge lyrical meaning to it in the hopes that it might bring something into our life. enjoy the music and shut the fuck up
thegreatasura 1 year ago
@Drizzlerman you don't need to apply a huge superiority complex to make people think you understand the song better, go fuck yourself. the world is full of enough pretentious douchebags.
thegreatasura 1 year ago
rippled dunes calm and surreal are symbolic of the female form and the glint of a solitary shaft of chromium steel being the lone male phallic symbol surrounded by a vastness of femininity and inability to interact with it's surroundings therefor being left to symbolize male dominance as a fading feature of society.
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
@Drizzlerman ?!?!? ARG DUDE what the fuck is coming out of that so-called mind of yours!!!!
Bojoe777NaBl 1 year ago
This song is like an ancient Greek/Roman orgy int he desert of Nevada or someplace near there, and then it turns into a gladiatorial free for all and they all die because they are all wasted and there is nothing else for them to do in the world that is increasingly becoming more flaccid and feminine, and less suitable for tough biker leather and chain wearing types.
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
@Drizzlerman ........why do I have a feeling you just hit a splif and posted some random bs on youtube :P
Bojoe777NaBl 1 year ago
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
you're trying to break it down too much man, enjoy the music and shut the fuck up
thegreatasura 1 year ago
so, that's the point you tard. To get beyond the fluff and see the reality which is revealing towards a historical point of view and a understanding of good storytelling and analysis to make connections that reveal something profound and that is the treasure of enjoying art. You stupid fast food nation play doh brained asshole
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
so by 'fluff' you mean the song, and by 'reality' you mean your dumbass interpretations of the words.

On a side not back in those days the on;y places you could get leather outfits and collars and such was in gay shops, Eric Bloom admits to this. Also maybe this song is about pederasty, " And passed from man to man- unwanted child to take to care that each would find his pleasure as he'd might..."
Drizzlerman 2 years ago
@Bojoe777NaBl I don't know where people are getting this shit either.
Kirke182 2 years ago
Well, what is your take on the song after an analysis of the lyrical themes and references I mean is this song just fluff or is it getting at something deeper than the superficial themes of just motorcycles, beer, and partying?
Drizzlerman 1 year ago
I saw them at Cobo Arena in Detroit during this tour. That was to this day the GREATEST rock show EVER!! Nothing I saw before or since has ever been able to match it. And they did this song superbly!
Kirke182 2 years ago
I gotten the feeling this song is slightly homoerotic in some of the mood, vibes, and word choices, phrasing of certain aspects in the lyrics which are too masculine as to not be suggestive of such.
Drizzlerman 2 years ago
@Drizzlerman ...........what the hell?? either you are smoking too much kush, or are searching too deep for a meaning. Sure BOC is called the thinking mans group for a reason, but, this song is about the golden age of leather, and talks about the good ol` days, and at the end, "AND THE GLINT OF A SHAFT OF CHROMIUM STEEL" suggests no Homoeroticness involved.
Bojoe777NaBl 2 years ago
It does, and with the choir singing intro it's reminiscent of something by Queen.
Drizzlerman 2 years ago
@Bojoe777NaBl The glint of a solitary shaft of chromium steel refers to human sacrifice.

This song is pure cinema, there should be an animated film of the whole Spectres album or for one for just about any of their albums actually.
Drizzlerman 2 years ago 4
This song is the Beach Boys on speed with added menace - it starts out with West Coast surf vocal harmonies tied to biker-gang lyrics, and just gets better!
Incidentally, the boys' choir singing on thre fadeout previously performed with Van Morrison on one of his LP's (Hard Nose the Highway)
Now there's a choir for a growing lad...

This is the single best album by BOC at the height of their creativity, when you listened to the ENTIRE sides of the album, the way it was meant to be. 1977 was such a good year, with BOC and Zeppelin touring the same summer!

1976 was my favorite year for music by far.

Could be part of the reason Danny Miranda was asked to leave BOC and join the pit orchestra at the Vegas "We Will Rock You" show and later to assume John Deacon's spot on the Queen/Paul Rogers tour/album
