I think this ending was so smart but I just felt so duped! Like, what was real and what wasn't. I mean, she explained but was the whole show always her talking.. I'm just confused. But I liked it but then again it had me feeling really weird because it ended sort of dark and it was always such a funny show.
@MegaRockMan1 That was the point, none of that ever happened, they didn't win the lottery. She was writing, imagining what she would do with all that money, it was a copping mechanism.
i hated this ending, not because it was a sad ending.............but because she freaking was writing the book the whole time, which again isn't the EXACT reason i hated it, she basically altered what really happened.
"remember Dan surviving the Heart attack? yeah he actually died...we also didn't win the lottery, and god knows what else i made up"
she essentially made alot of the episodes completely pointless.
@ShadowWolfRising I kinda think it was genius. She did what maybe most would do if they had the chance to relive their past. She changed most of the things she wished she could. I didnt quite get this ending when it first aired but just watching it again i totally get it now. And the ending is the complete truth, and she tells you what she changed. I love Roseanne. :)
It kills me to think Dan died. I loved that big guy and although I'm a slightly younger fan of the show I really did connect to the show. It always reminds me of home. Real problem, real issues, real strength.
I think the concept for the ending was ahead of its time. A "happy" ending would have not fit the premise of the show. Anytime I feel the need to return to the epitome of the 80's, I know I can just watch Roseanne.
I can't understand this. Let me see if I get this straight:
Season 8 is when dan gets his heart attack and dies, even though it doesn't actually show it. And season 9 is supposed to be a story written by Roseanne? and thats where the whole her mother being gay and jackie not and all this other shit? if some one could clear that up it'd be nice haha
Yup, that's pretty much it. This episode reveals that the entire show, not just the 9th season, is all just her memoirs. Only difference is that in reality, Dan's heart attack killed him, as well as the thing about her mom and sister, and she changes the final parts of the story so that he actually survived.
@codybaird27 ...calm down,He/She's an idiot...Don't waist your positive energy on Ignorants. The ending was Effin awesome,it's just to true and deep for some to understand and appreciate.Take care. :)
This is probably one of the most realistic sitcoms that ever aired on television. I am reminded of my own young life when I watch it in many ways. We had it all: bills we couldn't pay, eating out at cheap restaurants when times got really bad, divorce with subsequent financial ruin, wrecked credit after having to use credit cards to survive, bankruptcy, all of it. On no other show has Hollywood depicted real blue collar, Midwestern life. To the best of my knowledge, no other.
@Coleboy44TheThird Not all of it was a story. There were parts of her (Roseanne Connor) she wasn't happy with or thought didn't go the way they should. So, in her book, she changed them. The entire last season, however, was a fabrication in order to cope with the death of Dan. And that is completely understandable, as she said, for a blue collared woman to do. She needed her book to reflect on her life and that was what the series essentially was - Roseanne's life and the morals she learned.
I LOVE Roseanne but i just prefer not to watch the last season. Its just too different from the other seasons. It lost its spark im sorry to say. But give me seasons 1-8 and ill watch them any day of the week!
Liked the show til they went to Disney. That's when I stopped watching. This finale was pretty bad. I hate 'it was all a dream' cop outs. Makes me lose interest in the show. And this finale is one big of sorry-we-messed-this-all-up exposition. I don't demand constant hilarity, but I do expect something interesting to be happening. Glad this was posted, I had forgotten how it went.
I think I died a little inside when I first watched this episode. Seriously, it kind of irritates me when a series is supposedly funny or amusing and then the finale goes and screws it all to hell- like Alf or 3rd Rock. I mean, I get that they're trying to make it realistic, and it's good to show that not everything has a happily ever after, but after investing so much time in a series just to have it end on a totally soul crushing note? Seriously?
"Those who dream by night, in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that all was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible."
I love this show. Its amazing. Like someone said below, its a real show about a real family, and most of those shows dont come on anymore. Most shows on TV nowadays are so...out there, that they downright blow. So you gotta love these older shows that are actually...decent.
Is that chick singing in the background singing "What doesn't Kills you Makes you Stronger" Wynonna Judd or Bonnie Bartlett (the blonde that used to work with Roseanne as a waitress)? That version is the best that I've ever heard. Great ending by the way Roseanne. Ironic! Best in sitcom history to this date, in my opinion. U spoke the truth!
Season 9 was amazing. I love Roseanne. I watched it when I was little and I still continue to watch it today. This Series Finale was so real, I cry every time.
Those of us, I guess 90's children, who grew up watching the show could all relate in some way to the Conner family. I saw a lot of my dad in Dan, and yep - manly tears were shed. The ending was so absolutely well thought out and gripping - haunting even, and rivaled a good book's twist ending. They don't make shows like this anymore, and the actors who all played in this show are severely underrated.
Overall Season 9 was an abomination (especially the "fantasy" episodes), however the series and finale were outstanding. A lot of people don't even try to "get" Roseanne, they just hear and see a loud-mouthed overweight woman hauling off at everyone in her path. There's a lot more to it than that. Bravo to a great finale.
i liked darlene and david together...the ending when i first saw it was a little confusing but then i got it...i miss Roseanne..Darlene was my favorite character
@shmian10 Oh shut up. Just because Roseanne wanted you to know the truth doesn't mean it sucked. My god, if you really liked the show you'd find this ending more then fulfilling
when dan had the heart attack i cried so much but when he was okay i was so happy but when i saw this and found out he died i felt like i had a lost a father=(
There will NEVER be another Roseanne, Cosby Show, Full House, Sister Sister, Family Ties, Family Matters or in other words REAL shows (the list goes on) EVER! Now it's all just crap shows like Gossip Girl blegh! who the fuck cares about rich people sleeping with eachother? so lame.
I agree man but George Lopez Show was pretty awesome too. Sadly it ended about a few years ago. I think that might have been the last great family sitcom
this is the one show that is real has real life and familys i wish that dan was alive and they all lived the way they did but this show proves that bad things happen to good people. . things never go they way u want them. . this show does not hold back it shows what real familys go thou and i can really conect with them.
@kc5cxu I'm not 100% sure, but I think Dan had a heart attack on a previous ep and didn't pull thru. The episodes from then on was Rosanne thinking how "it' could've been, Dan surviving, lotto etc till the finale.
@kc5cxu i think it was the last episode of season 8, which i think was called "the wedding" when darlene married David, it showed Dan starting to have the heart attack and falling to the ground, it fades out with the credits rolling and you hear an ambulance and the paramedics getting a stretcher; it's really sad to see, he's such a caring good father, much like the real blue collar fathers who work so hard to provide what they can for their family's much like my own father, i cried when he died
@snakesonaplane2 Actually that wasn't the season 8 finale, Heart and Soul was where they all go to the hospital to see Dan and the last scene is Roseanne sitting at his bedside with a magazine, this was also originally intended to be the series finale
Personally, I always liked the ending. It was really surreal, and so sad. I thought it was different, and a great way to end the show. Especially after the strange 9th season.
This episode always made me cry, from the day it aired, to the rerun. I think because its real life, its what really happenes. Roseanne was a REAL show, about a REAL family, i think thats why my dad doesnt like it that much.
@JerrySpringerisCool thats so true it was REAL and all those things still hapen to this very day. but not just her family went through it all families at least some point go into these things in life
I liked and hated this finale for different reasons. First of all, it was sad and tragic and it was nice to see Roseanne's sensitive side after nine seasons of mostly fooling around. However, the finale summarized that the show "Roseanne" was just lies and that's what I didn't like. Had she JUST made Season 9 up, I would have been ecstatic, but then she had to get into the past eight seasons. Overall, "Roseanne" was a masterpiece with an okay ending. I wish Dan didn't have to die, though.
@Brian112891 I understand what you mean but I think you're missing the deeper meaning of this finale. Her "lies" were really just her way or coping with the shitty hand life had dealt her. Having to struggle day by day, losing the love of your life, almost losing a grandchild, having a troubled past... Her way of dealing with all of these things was to (re)write it. I loved this finale, more than any other show finale, because it's the most realistic and relatable I've ever seen.
so they didn't win the lottery,Jackie gay, Mark and Darlene are a couple and Dan is dead? So from that I guess the 4th child is not real and Jackie didn't have a child. It's all just a book. Man that's crazy
@iiloveyyou1 It wasn't so much she preffered him cheating on her as much as his dying felt like he had left her for another woman. Hence why she wrote that scenario instead of his actual death.
Dan ain't dead. he went bowling with the dude and got arrest for pulling out a gun at smokey cuz he went over the line and didn't mark his frame zero.
Really, really a surreal ending. It's like you watched this family develop for years and years. You could relate to them. They were your typical American middle class family. They almost became your family. Then to find out it was all a book is just weird. You can never, at least I can't, watch the show again the same way after knowing what you do after watching this. To know that all you watched and experienced was false is heart breaking. Nonetheless a powerful, moving series finale.
I sure do wish they would bring roseanne back like a new sitcom updates on the kids grown up with their kids and grandkids lol I miss seeing the episodes i felt like I was part of the family I watched it so much!!!!!!!
when i first saw this i was so confused..but now i get it...the only question is "if jackie was gay then why did she date guys?" because i thought only the last two seasons are what roseanne changed?? hmm anyone know? unless jackie came out later in life..haha
I followed this season when I was little, well, little-er, and this episode hit me hard. I cried for awhile after the episode ended. Until I connected the dots and realized it made a lot of sense about why the last season didn't make any sense.
I couldn't watch this episode when it was aired! I couldn't stand watching Dan passing away. I saw this for the first time last night and was as devastated as I knew I would be back then. Sad, truly was sad.
I wonder if they planned this finale all along the last season...truly one of the BEST finale's of all time...and the saddest most heartfelt..I loved this episode...so deep, and real..
This was the most ground breaking episode of Rosanne. I surely thought that the Conners were successful with winning the lottery. Wow. This is a very surreal plot twist and the perfect ending to one of the grand champions of television shows. Although it did not premiere in my generation, I love it for one simple Reason: Rosanne! A perfect Ten to a perfect show.
This was very touching, but I hate it! It's depressing! I don't really care too much for the show after 1994. I love this show, but it changed too much after 1994. It just wasn't the same, and the ending of the series is just..disappointing, to say the least. =[
This is terrible. They completely messed up the show by turning 180 degrees and turning it into some kind of a soapy, sappy drama. The show started off fresh, down to earth, warm and kind but it just ended with Roseanne's obvious insanity and neurosis from some kind of midlife crisis. Winning the lottery, Dan getting a heart attack, cheating on her, dying- come on. They shoulda stopped after the 6th season. This ending was just a depressing downward spiral unworthy of the spirit of the show.
i remember the first time i saw this episode, i was like... 8 or 9. i cried but i didnt understand what she was talking about. now that im 14, i do. this show had such an unexpected ending but, i love this show! im watching it on TVLand. they're on the christmas dan comes back and at the end, jackie hears him talking to a woman on the phone thats not his mom.
this monolgue is brilliant. the shows writing went missing during the final season(dare i say , final 2 seasons?) but im always fascinated when i watch this scene. id love to put it in a notebook, and read it everyday. the show wasnt that good in the final season, but ill always love this scene.
When it comes to Darlene and David, I like Roseanne's version better. After seeing all they've been through I can't really imagine David with anyone else.
Such a powerful series finale. Right now I can't think of a show that's done better.
this is a INTENSE FINALE I love her quotes its underneath us all WE HOLD THE POWER THE CARDS OF OUR LIFES ITS UP TO USE TO MOVE ON STAY STRONG AND LIVE OUR LIFES FOR THE RIGHT REASONS
Roseanne good show Dan was my fav he had a short temper but funny as shit and just funny to see DAN Explode on people smaller than him what a bully
Wow, that made me tear... I liked the finale, I have never seen it until now. I have seen ever other episode, but the finale...it was nice, I love this show!
Pretty much. Actually, since the last season was entirely from her imagination, that's probably where she got the inspiration to write that Dan had cheated on her with his mother's nurse, because his death felt like a betrayal, almost as if he'd "left her for another woman." Her depression, which she wrote was from him cheating on her, was actually from his death. The lottery, visiting NY, everything she did was an escape from the reality that Dan was gone forever.
All it shows is that no matter what happens nothing ever goes the way you want it. Life is though, but you will make it through your strength, and according to Roseanne, the strength of God. It's a good message. It's a true sense of hope.
Nope, it was the other way around in the finale. That is the way it happened in the show, but in the final monologue, she reveals that it was actually the other way around, so Darlene married Mark and Becky married David.
I like the fact that this episode portrayed a sense of realism at the end! Not everyone have a happy ending where everything goes right like what most sitcoms do! So I'm sort of glad they didn't go the route of everything being a fairytale at the end and everyone walks into the sunset.. Life is not the simple!
Also with Dan dying, it made all of the characters seem HUMAN! Like their not invincible like sitcom characters are mainly portrayed as.
saw this episode last night..too dam depressing..i almost cried..i didn't like the ending, but i did like parts of the monologue, especially when it came to raising their kids and the part where dan is the the first thing she thinks of when she wakes. the whole episode just didn't fit the whole show. oh well. i especially didn't like the fact that david ended up with becky and darlene with mark. it was better the other way around.
here here. i agree with u 100%. just the thought of becky with david, ick. nasty. darlene and david are cuter, and becky seemed like the girl who'd end up with a bad boy. i watched it in the 90s growing up, stopped for reason then recently started watching it. i love it=)
wow.... this episode was a real shocker. I sat with m mouth haning open for the last 8 minutes of it. I will never be able to watch some of the other episodes before this with out going " That didn't really happen, and that didn't really happen, and that......" wow.....that episode is kinda depressing don't ya think?.....all this time half the stuff in the episodes never really happened....wow.....
What a fucking cop-out ive been wanting to see this show for years!!!! i guess i hadn't seen most of the last season. But now i wish i wouldent have.
This whole lase season is wacked out. and the last show is a copout for something like.... writers strike .. or probably Roseanne took over and thought she could wright better or some stupid shit. there should be a disclaimer b4 you watch this . "We had to end the show and couldn't think of anything good so here ya go"
Yes. That's exactly what happened, douchebag. They all went on strike and Roseanne stepped in because she thought she could "wright" better than them. Fucking moron...
Next time you wanna critize someone's "wrighting" ability, try proofreading your own first.... Asshole..
Tell me the last season was even close 2 what we knew from the show ...
let me ask you this moboy.
Have you ever watched a movie and it seamed like the ending didn't fit ? like the movie was good but at the end they realized they was running out of time so they quickly wraped it up real cheesy like .?
Oh i has a typo... critique me you dumbass..
everyone is in tilted to there opinion.. don't criticize me for thinking the last season was crap and i won't criticize you for being a homo
You're right, everyone does have the right to THEIR own opinion. And as for your little "homo" comment, funny you should mention that...are you trying to tell us something? I for one am very comfortable with my sexuality as a HOMO. Besides, what does my being gay have to do with the fact that you're a judemental douchbag?
Your So silly...lol You attacked me I just defended myself. and your a little right I shouldn't have made that comment.. My bad... :p Back on point... You have not commented on any of my arguments about the show. come on
i wish that the show didn't end this wayy!!!! it was so so sad and made me cry! never has a season finale been this shocking to me. They should have had a good happy ending lk it would have been if they didn't add that whole everything being just a story thing. how sad :(
me tooo...i was like what you didnt win the lotto.DAN DIED!!I cried..the ending was sad...Im 30 all the shows where new to me because growing up my mom didnt want me to watch it.. so i snuck sometimes but not really..But i love this show...Roseanne has made me stong...Ok ill stop blabbing now
crap, that changed my whole perception to the show... now every time i watch it, i'm going to think back to this episode, and piece together this episode with the older ones. :(( all the possibilities.
I like the whole show Roseanne. The only thing that I don't think fit into the whole Conor thing was when they had Dan in California cheating on Roseanne. That I cannot see happening..
I think this ending was so smart but I just felt so duped! Like, what was real and what wasn't. I mean, she explained but was the whole show always her talking.. I'm just confused. But I liked it but then again it had me feeling really weird because it ended sort of dark and it was always such a funny show.

Roseanne redeemed itself in the finale with a fantastically bittersweet ending.

Thay never showed where dan died off the show?
kc5cxu 1 year ago
@kc5cxu I'm not 100% sure, but I think Dan had a heart attack on a previous ep and didn't pull thru. The episodes from then on was Rosanne thinking how "it' could've been, Dan surviving, lotto etc till the finale.
mrst3ve0 1 year ago
@kc5cxu i think it was the last episode of season 8, which i think was called "the wedding" when darlene married David, it showed Dan starting to have the heart attack and falling to the ground, it fades out with the credits rolling and you hear an ambulance and the paramedics getting a stretcher; it's really sad to see, he's such a caring good father, much like the real blue collar fathers who work so hard to provide what they can for their family's much like my own father, i cried when he died
snakesonaplane2 1 year ago
@snakesonaplane2 Actually that wasn't the season 8 finale, Heart and Soul was where they all go to the hospital to see Dan and the last scene is Roseanne sitting at his bedside with a magazine, this was also originally intended to be the series finale

Brian112891 1 year ago

Man that's crazy
clinch44 1 year ago
wait so did Dan actually cheat on Roseanne or was that all part of the book?

@Andizzlefofo It was all part of the book, She had preferred Dan cheating on her than Him being dead.

@iiloveyyou1 ohh i see. damn thats kinda sad that he died :( great show though.
Andizzlefofo 1 year ago
@iiloveyyou1 It wasn't so much she preffered him cheating on her as much as his dying felt like he had left her for another woman. Hence why she wrote that scenario instead of his actual death.

nowhereboy 1 year ago
Really, really a surreal ending. It's like you watched this family develop for years and years. You could relate to them. They were your typical American middle class family. They almost became your family. Then to find out it was all a book is just weird. You can never, at least I can't, watch the show again the same way after knowing what you do after watching this. To know that all you watched and experienced was false is heart breaking. Nonetheless a powerful, moving series finale.

b36495 1 year ago
This is terrible. They completely messed up the show by turning 180 degrees and turning it into some kind of a soapy, sappy drama. The show started off fresh, down to earth, warm and kind but it just ended with Roseanne's obvious insanity and neurosis from some kind of midlife crisis. Winning the lottery, Dan getting a heart attack, cheating on her, dying- come on. They shoulda stopped after the 6th season. This ending was just a depressing downward spiral unworthy of the spirit of the show.

profanityprayers 2 years ago
no when he had the heart attack around the time of Darlene's wedding, he actually died from it.
LaikVictoria49 2 years ago
@pumashoes42
The lottery, visiting NY, everything she did was an escape from the reality that Dan was gone forever.

profanityprayers 2 years ago
ok. wow. what a nice ending...........?
Forevermoonlight13 2 years ago
the way they decided to end the series was to make it seem as though the ENTIRE show was Roseanne's book.
Jackie was homo, not her mom
Darlene married Mark while Becky married David
Dan died when he had the heart attack instead of making it through it.
It's sad :(
LaikVictoria49 2 years ago
All it shows is that no matter what happens nothing ever goes the way you want it. Life is though, but you will make it through your strength, and according to Roseanne, the strength of God. It's a good message. It's a true sense of hope.
vincennzo13 1 year ago
@LaikVictoria49 u got it backwards darlene married david :) an mark married becky
thunderhorse123456 1 year ago
Nope, it was the other way around in the finale. That is the way it happened in the show, but in the final monologue, she reveals that it was actually the other way around, so Darlene married Mark and Becky married David.
jarofdirt3132 1 year ago
I like the fact that this episode portrayed a sense of realism at the end! Not everyone have a happy ending where everything goes right like what most sitcoms do! So I'm sort of glad they didn't go the route of everything being a fairytale at the end and everyone walks into the sunset.. Life is not the simple!
Also with Dan dying, it made all of the characters seem HUMAN! Like their not invincible like sitcom characters are mainly portrayed as.
Jeffrizel1986 2 years ago
saw this episode last night..too dam depressing..i almost cried..i didn't like the ending, but i did like parts of the monologue, especially when it came to raising their kids and the part where dan is the the first thing she thinks of when she wakes. the whole episode just didn't fit the whole show. oh well. i especially didn't like the fact that david ended up with becky and darlene with mark. it was better the other way around.
kookie0705 2 years ago 2
here here. i agree with u 100%. just the thought of becky with david, ick. nasty. darlene and david are cuter, and becky seemed like the girl who'd end up with a bad boy. i watched it in the 90s growing up, stopped for reason then recently started watching it. i love it=)

This whole lase season is wacked out. and the last show is a copout for something like.... writers strike .. or probably Roseanne took over and thought she could wright better or some stupid shit. there should be a disclaimer b4 you watch this . Yes. That's exactly what happened, douchebag. They all went on strike and Roseanne stepped in because she thought she could "wright" better than them. Fucking moron...
