OK. For the ignorant people, Chinese is an ethnicity not a focking language. (to dungheap123) Mandarin and Cantonese are the languages. Jay Chou was trying to speak Cantonese but epic-failed. And yes, Mandarin is easier to learn when you know Canto...I just watch Mandarin movies to learn the language, which works! xD Canto FTW.

Chinese is indeed an ethnicity and a language where Mandarin and Cantonese are dialects. They're subsets of the Chinese language which is why there is somewhat of uniformity in written Chinese, however there exists spoken differences in the dialects. Mandarin is of course easier to learn given the smaller number of tones embodied in the dialect.

It's easier being canto then learning mando since cantonese has 13 tones and mandarin only has 4 tones.

actually, it doesn't matter whether you can read chinese or not, i can't read, but i still learn the spoken language easily. in all dialects, the spoken language really has nothing to do with the written if you look at phonetics, but almost all the dialects use the same written language.
