Actually, you got it right the first time. 'It's a cross I need to bear,' is correct. First of all, bear, while an animal also means 'to tolerate' whereas bare implies that someone is without clothing. Also, the cross is supposed to be a sort of/kind of reference to Jesus 'bearing the cross' it's like an expression; but it doesn't necessarily have huge religious impact.
