@TheXCrunchyX When I say she takes its place I mean she gets down on her hands and knees and acts like a dog. I don't remember much else, but I don't recall these people being very interesting or sympathetic. I wish I could forget the dog murder, but I can't.
@TheXCrunchyX You can see a little of it in this clip. She coaxes it into the water, and then swims out far enough so that the dog cannot swim back. It's quite deliberate on her part, because the Marcello Mastroianni character loves the dog, and the woman wants Marcello all to herself.
I can't remember what the red glasses signify. They may have belonged to the dog.

She deliberately drowns the dog and then takes its place. That should warn all of you off this movie.
