They look like bits of burnt paper or leaves, blowing around in the wind. More likely they are a CGI, non-wildfire starting alternative to bits of burnt paper or leaves.
...Not to mention the guy that just got blown into the turbine.
it looks like debri that was floating, like something as light as paper, then was blown back by the blast. the flames start coming out of the engine before the black thing even gets close to it

I understand the producers have expressed it was a CGI error, but isn't CGI a frame-by-frame process? In a CGI fuelled explosion (or not) surely they would've noticed the black 'smoke'?
Yea producers/writers confirmed it's the product of a cgi error. This was cleared up after a number of fans thought smokey destryoed the plane engine.
Producers say that it was a failure, but just before this that guy gets knocked into the engine: if you look closely, you can see some 'smoke' knocking him in. Its flying all over the place in the first episode anyway. If it is a big thing, and one of the biggest secrets anbout the monster turns out to be supported by this clip, then the producers wouldnt say now 'oh yeah, thats it' would they?
its been debunked like 4 years ago. the producers said that it was a CGI failure. that black thing was supposed to fly out when the motor exploded. but it came in too early. they have said that the smoke monster doesnt appear in the pilot. dumbass
there were black stuff flying around *everywhere* in that episode. that thing is just one of them, and it is just a coincidence that it flew by the engine when it exploded.

ok, you'll see that when you watch the whole scene that there is quite a lot of material blowing around the crash site, they are materials form the plane.
i know of a theory saying that the black thing above the engine was the smoke monster, but that disnt really make sense, why would it blow up an engine randomly when its on the ground. its more probably that its jsut debre blowing aroudn in the air
