I sailed on Queen Elizabeth from Southampton to New York in July 1964. I was 8 years old, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Inside and out she was a real beauty. I was even taken down into the engine room...like a metal cathedral.

Remember it was Brunel that invented the propellor :) re comments argueing over who invented what lol and the comment about new ships being ugly etc. Take a look at the Disney Ships which are a tribut to 1930s cruises and have similar lines to the QE, Also the QM2 has similar lnes to bothe the QM and QE2 ut theres this thing called progress :)

@Romerjon17 No. When she retired, she was sold to a person in Hong Kong. That person planned to make Queen Elizabeth into a university. Sadly, in 1972 an arsonist went onboard the ship and started a fire. The fire lasted for three days until the ship capsized of the water being used to fight the fire. A lot of people hoped the fire would stop, but it didn't. After she capsized, she was partially scraped where she layed. She is still sitting on her side in the seabed. Even today.

@Romerjon17 To add, she retired from service in November 1968. Yes, the fire did stop after she capsized, but it didn't stop too soon. Had she been as lucky as the R.M.S. Queen Mary she would have still been here today. But since the Queen Mary is haunted anyway(If you don't believe me, watch this video on Youtube:Most Haunted: Queen Mary1 Part 1), then the Queen Elizabeth is more lucky then her. I wish she was still here, like her sister: Queen Elizabeth 2.(Now floating at a port.).

@SBernardoni1991 They were not good built. But we learned from our faults. When Titanic sank her sisters received double hull plating or something like that. More lifeboats, but the Lusitania and Olympic Class and other modern liners were true 'ships'. Cruise ships can't be named ships, they are floating fridges.

I agree with buzz, the new ships are not grand like this old lady was, nor will they ever be, the stacks, the lines, these old ladies were the cat's meow of steamships, the end of the era was sad, somethings will stand the test of time, like the image of these ships, they still are the ones that catch people's eyes..new ships look more like all the homogenized plastic looking same design bubble rounded cars on the streets. no character, nothing to even remotely draw one to them....

Carnival bought Cunard in 1998, but Cunard's headquarters remains in Southampton, England, and the ships are crewed and registered in Britain and therefore, in maritime law, are British.

Carnival didn't even exist when the original Queen Elizabeth (the ship in this video) was in service - Carnival was founded in 1972; the first Queen Elizabeth was withdrawn from service in 1968.

Queen Elizabeth was British through and through - named after the Queen who launched her from a Scottish shipyard and owned by the Cunard Line that was headquartered in Liverpool. Cunard did'nt become an American company until the late-1980s when Carnival Corp bought the company. Before that Cunard was owned by British and non-British companies. If Carnival did'nt purchase Cunard, the company could have easily closed-down when QE2was evetually retired. Carnival's deep pockets re-built the line and paid for the new Queen Mary 2.
