@brighthelmjacks the greatest ship was the lizzie as seaman called her ,iwas the chief engineers steward and also worked in their saloon under the 1st funnel of the two
I sailed on Queen Elizabeth from Southampton to New York in July 1964. I was 8 years old, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Inside and out she was a real beauty. I was even taken down into the engine room...like a metal cathedral.
Remember it was Brunel that invented the propellor :) re comments argueing over who invented what lol and the comment about new ships being ugly etc. Take a look at the Disney Ships which are a tribut to 1930s cruises and have similar lines to the QE, Also the QM2 has similar lnes to bothe the QM and QE2 ut theres this thing called progress :)
@Romerjon17 No. When she retired, she was sold to a person in Hong Kong. That person planned to make Queen Elizabeth into a university. Sadly, in 1972 an arsonist went onboard the ship and started a fire. The fire lasted for three days until the ship capsized of the water being used to fight the fire. A lot of people hoped the fire would stop, but it didn't. After she capsized, she was partially scraped where she layed. She is still sitting on her side in the seabed. Even today.
@Romerjon17 To add, she retired from service in November 1968. Yes, the fire did stop after she capsized, but it didn't stop too soon. Had she been as lucky as the R.M.S. Queen Mary she would have still been here today. But since the Queen Mary is haunted anyway(If you don't believe me, watch this video on Youtube:Most Haunted: Queen Mary1 Part 1), then the Queen Elizabeth is more lucky then her. I wish she was still here, like her sister: Queen Elizabeth 2.(Now floating at a port.).
@Romerjon17 For the last adding, I'm sure you already knew that since JBofBrisbane told you the clue. But I just gave you extra information.( I didn't see that JBofBrisbane told you the answer.)
@SBernardoni1991 well you can only really say that about titanic since britannic and lusitania were torpedoed so it really wasnt an error that caused there sinkings
@SBernardoni1991 They were not good built. But we learned from our faults. When Titanic sank her sisters received double hull plating or something like that. More lifeboats, but the Lusitania and Olympic Class and other modern liners were true 'ships'. Cruise ships can't be named ships, they are floating fridges.
i love cunard,&white star line but my favorit ocean line is UNITED STATES LINES becuase they r AMERICAN & they built THE GREAT STEAM SHIPUNITED STATES which held the blue ribben for the fastest transatlantic voyage for half a century!! she wasnt even going full speed on her maiden voyage cunard could nver buid a ship like the UNITED STATES Navy can altho the ss us or any us passenger ship hold the recurd nethur dose Britan!
@Gnickk well unlike the queen elizabeth the SS US never couht fire and sank then was scraped but many of the sisters of the SS US got new owners b4 they got scraped some like the ss America were the flag ships of their new owners plus the SS US was built to b that fast incase of anothor world war and maybe no one built a faster ship becuas of the air lines so their wasnt a need and the sun sat long ago on the british empire & was it a brit who discoverd electricity no it was an AmeriCAN
The Queen Mary or Queen Elizabeth the very old ships were used as a ghost ship in the 2003 movie "The Triangle". The ship in the movie was named Queen of Scots.
My mother immigrated to the US on the Queen Elizabeth, and my dad sailed on both the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. My grandfather sailed on the graceful Aquitania.
I love the Queens' timeless British swagger that keeps fresh for generations and what everybody can relate to. I always think of the piece 'Proud Mary'.
I like this song. I have some love to my girlfriend Jenny. Other then that.... I lay all my love on Ocean Liners. I even lay all love on Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth.
Why did Queen Elizabeth have to die? OHHH. You know if I was a Zombie Ocean Liner devotee.... A Zombie to Ocean Liners... A Ocean Liner Zombie.. A Zombie slave to Ocean Liners,I would eat the brains of whoever did this to her. I will!
I agree with buzz, the new ships are not grand like this old lady was, nor will they ever be, the stacks, the lines, these old ladies were the cat's meow of steamships, the end of the era was sad, somethings will stand the test of time, like the image of these ships, they still are the ones that catch people's eyes..new ships look more like all the homogenized plastic looking same design bubble rounded cars on the streets. no character, nothing to even remotely draw one to them....
The two Queens of the high seas were the best in my book, another great was the Normandie and the SS United States, but the Queens took the cake, I was raised in Long Beach where the Mary sits, and have toured her many times, my wife is in Hong Kong where the Elizabeth met her demise, so sad....These ships were the end of an era, hands down.....Am glad the Mary is still there...a great ship! I enjoyed this video! The Cunard liners of the past are some of the greatest creations of man in my opinion. It is such a shame what happened to Queen Elizabeth as the Seawise University. Fire is one of a ship's worst enemies!
(Not to be too picky, but the two-stacked Cunarder at 2:47 is actually the second R.M.S. Mauretania.)
Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth are the the greatest Super Ocean Liners in the world. they size were un surpassed for 50 years after their Maiden Voyages.
And I suggest you read my comment properly - I already mentioned the Carnival connection.
Carnival bought Cunard in 1998, but Cunard's headquarters remains in Southampton, England, and the ships are crewed and registered in Britain and therefore, in maritime law, are British.
Carnival didn't even exist when the original Queen Elizabeth (the ship in this video) was in service - Carnival was founded in 1972; the first Queen Elizabeth was withdrawn from service in 1968.
Queen Elizabeth was British through and through - named after the Queen who launched her from a Scottish shipyard and owned by the Cunard Line that was headquartered in Liverpool. Sure, it belongs to Carnival now, and produces hideous Las Vegas imitations of the old great liners - lumpen outside and vulgar inside - but that is now, not then.
@buzzbound So true what you say about modern liners in comparison. Many of those are larger than the old queen - But the queens elegant flowing lines and perfect proportions give the impression of making her look larger than today’s shapeless ' floating tower blocks'
Cunard did'nt become an American company until the late-1980s when Carnival Corp bought the company. Before that Cunard was owned by British and non-British companies. If Carnival did'nt purchase Cunard, the company could have easily closed-down when QE2was evetually retired. Carnival's deep pockets re-built the line and paid for the new Queen Mary 2.
First of all, she was built in Clydebank , Scotland. Secondly Harland & Wolfe are in Belfast which is in Britain. You folk are unable to tell the difference between Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England ALL of which are part of the United Kingdom - not England.
@Abricialio First of all "Northern Ireland" is the correct name for it. North Ireland is a completely different country. You are arguing with someone who is a graduate of Queens University Belfast - do you want to continue with your ignorance now?
@johnblack03 I am not going to argue with you. You think that you're some godly person who think he is the best in History things. It doesn't matter where Belfast is located, I live a country near Great Britain, The Netherlands.
@Abricialio I think nothing of the sort - I merely was pointing out your ignorance regarding the difference between Northern Ireland and the north of ireland. If you were man or woman enough you would at least admit you are wrong.
@johnblack03 It's because of the so many rumors here on YouTube of people were they only saying 'Titanic built in Ireland' without saying 'Northern Ireland'. I have nothing against you, because I live a country near United Kingdom. I wish they could have rebuild the Queen Elizabeth 1 and let her standing next to her sister Queen Mary 1.
@LukeXgamer Samuel Cunard was Canadian and a shipowner before he had the idea to offer to run a mail steamship service between the UK and the USA. The design of the first four ships of the Cunard Line was strongly influenced by Scottish engineer and shipbuilder Robert Napier. Those ships and many of the hundreds that were to follow them were built on the River Clyde in Scotland. The most recent Cunarders were built in France and Italy.
The most prominent financial backers of Cunard were the Glasgow-based shipowner Sir George Burns and the Liverpool-based shipowner David McIver. Over 60 years later, when the American IMM shipping corporation was trying to monopolise the Atlantic trade the Cunard Chairman and descendant of Sir George Burns, Lord Inverclyde, successfully petitioned the British Government to finance the maintenance of an independant British presence on the Atlantic
she was so huge when she was launched, there was so much friction, so when she got into the sea, the water steamed! notice it shows this from 0:52 to 0:58!
Cunard was a britich shipping company registerd by samual cunard in which he won the royal mail contract presented to him by queen victoria. Cunard is no longer shipping bussiness term its a brand now since it was bourght by carnivakl corporation
