Braben squeezed an impressive amount of data onto a single 880K floppy. Too bad there wasn't any room left on the disk for "fun".
Frontier is an impressive tech demo, but a lousy game. His insistence on using real physics completely ruined the combat and made it virtually impossible to get anywhere without using the autopilot, which was buggy as hell.
Take Frontier, fix the numerous bugs, give it Elite style spaceflight and you'd have a winner.
@retronostalgic This game was pretty solid and I only remember a couple of bugs which didn't actually affect gameplay. I think the sequel, elite first encounters was the one riddled with bugs but since I never owned it I couldn't say for sure.
@apolak80 well actually ive been playing this old favourite again on an original amiga and the game does mess up sometimes- for example if you're descending to a planet spaceport and you speed things up sometimes the ship will crash into the ground for no apparent reason. Also i noticed the bulletin board screens screw up once or twice( but maybe that was the save game disk getting in the way).
u ever fit a class 8 hyper drive to one? lol, if u got the 1t of rubbish bug/cheat to work u could make the bay as big as u liked. and a class 8 would go in. could get huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge jumps. lol
I loved Frontier so much back on my old Amiga A500+, it had much poorer frame-rate on there than the better Amigas (A1200 etc.) but it was still great. Easily the best game on the Amiga without a doubt.
For an even better experience, I suggest you to try FFED3D. It's a Direct3D version of First Encounters, with updated graphics (a Cobra MKIII has never looked better!) and capable to run at much higher resolution. And, since it does not use post-processing, if you have the right equipment and drivers (e.g. iz3D drivers and monitor, or nVidia 3D Vision Suite) you can even play it in stereoscopic 3D!
nothing more satisfying having autopilot on and a ship with a turret view, lol a tiny bit like v-side f4 nice view the panther dude almost escaped lol i arrived just in time but a little eagle that day also was out of petrol so a hyper reading was out the question
this is the game that made me wish I could make my Amiga faster.

@apolak80 - Is it me or did this game have quite a few bugs messing the game up?

@retronostalgic haha yes, that was one of the bugs i remember. The way to counter it is to speed up to the maximum and it won't crash.

Have any of you guys heard of GLFrontier?
It allows you to play this game in a bigger window, with anti alias options too. It' awesome.

You can download the shareware PC version, as well as the codes from the manual, from the Eliteclub site.

I mean the manual to Frontier Elite II ofcourse, lol

Ppl you get rewarded with a higher frame rate if you run it in NTSC instead of PAL.

The AVGN has an Amiga and probably played Frontier, but of course he's never gonna review it because it's a GOOD game.
