Nice song, but his live performance isn't completely convincing. A funny note: Gianni's arms and hands dimensions are a sort of legend here in Italy.
Yes, it was a hit in Greece too back then (Italian music was very big here in the 60s and 70s). I agree on what you say about both the song and the performance, by the way - and I don't dare imagine what's being said about his arms and hands... :-))
I have to correct myself. Sanremo-ESC breach was before, in 1966 (null point entry by D.Modugno). After '66 only two Sanremo winner songs rapresented Italy in ESC: a magnificent poem by Nicola di Bari (I giorni dell'arcobaleno 1972) and the worst Sanremo winner song of the 1990s (Fiumi di parole by Jalisse 1997). After this horror, in 1998 RAI established a final ''italian ESC-pop isolation'' :-).
"Fiumi di Parole" was the worst Sanremo winner of the 90s?! Wow, if so, I must surely catch up with my knowledge of the festival's history (of which I know little, to be honest), because I LOVE that one (so i can only imagine what the other winners will be!). And, you're right, Nicoli di Bari's song was also truly AMAZING. I just wish RAI could re-evaluate its position and bring Italy back to the ESC... :-(
Fiumi di Parole had a considerable succes in Europe (4th pl.), but their victory is one of the most controversial in Sanremo history. There were at least 3 better songs and after 1997 Jalisse returned quickly into obscurity. Their live performance in SR was also better than in ESC, imo. For an example of 90s Sanremo winners, take a look to winner songs ''Senza Pietà'' (Anna Oxa, 1999) or ''Come saprei'' (Giorgia, 1995).
I'm not a fan of ESC (I have a different idea about what a musical festival is), but it is still a way to promote national music abroad, or not? I understand and partialy share RAI point of view, in Italy ESC is absoluty irrilevant, nobody care about it, it was a 'EBU obligation', not a pleasure (see 1991). But now we are alone, a proud black hole in Europe map..and I think we remain it..(Go San Marino!) Pardon for my bad english.
