What an incredible song! I was thinking who JC's voice reminded me of...Not sure of which one it is in the band but one of the guys from Ozark Mountain Daredevils. The guy with the softer voice who sings songs like From Time to Time. Love them and absolutely love this and all the good old Styx music.
This song came to mind a couple days ago. I remember hearing it for the first time back in the late 70's. It was my favorite song from this album, and one of my top Styx songs. This, for me, WAS Styx at its best. I think most people remember them from their more commercial songs, but whenever I bought one of their albums, I tended towards songs like this...what some might call the "B-side" stuff. I rec Suite Madam Blue and Man In The Wilderness for those who haven't heard them.
You are right, GrandmasterLife. This song is already, in one hearing, become one of my favourite Styx songs. I somehow seemed to have missed hearing it earlier. It is beautiful. thanks for putting it out for people like me to discover. Blessings
Styx II was clearly one of their best albums. The Wooden Nickel days were great, before they got into the sticky sweet ballad stuff. This song shows amazing talent for such young guys at the time. I started playing drums in '75 at age 16 and taught myself to play along with their records(and others) in our basement. Many years and bands later, this album still brings back great memories.
I saw them for the first time as a back up band in Stevens Point WI. The next day we tried to find their album and had to travel 60 miles to get it. That night we got so stoned and blown away by the music I had to crawl up from the basement of a friends house. We were not drinking - just blasted from he experience. Amazing memories....
The band was great when they had curlewski on guitar with JY, more writing, more guitar threats...they were just plain better...after he left they really werent that good in my opinion...i didnt like anything once he was gone besides madame blue...but Styx II is by far their best album
Same, I have every album of Styx, except for their roboto piece of crap album. I remember I was driving to school in my Pontiac Bonneville, and i almost started crying when I heard this on the radio
imtallpaul - good point - a fantastic song that holds some great memories for me - thanks so much for posting Grandmaster - my vinyl of this is shot havn't heard it for many years
@karlmoles65 I have EVERY Styx Album and have heard EVRY Styx song, I prefer this song because it is features someone else besides DeYoung, Shaw or even JY. I think Styx has MANY great songs. I just like the changes and the story of this one...PS "Mother Dear' and "Unfinished Song" are numbers 2-3 on my list. Thanks for thr debate! Love Styx!
@imtallpaul I gotcha. Everyone is perfectly entitled to their own likes and dislikes. I have their entire catalog on vinyl up through Pieces Of 8, after that they changed and I lost interest. I however, think Styx has many great songs too.
La chanson la plus etrange depuis une semaine. Mais tout a fait appreciable. A bien y penser: Un buffet complet.

Whose on lead vocals?
ShawsDiva 1 year ago
@ShawsDiva It was the late John Curulewski, Styx's first lead guitarist/vocalist/songwriter from 1972 until 1976, whom Tommy Shaw later replaced...
