The problems with clean coal are (1) unproven technology.
(2) cost estimates vary: A$10/tonne co2(batterham) A$140/tonne co2 (US Doe)
(3) The long term risks are great. Release due to geological activity, rupture or leakage. We are passing the problem on to the next generation as usual!
If you don't believe how worried the coal lobby are just look at the NSW state election, they must have spent thousands setting up fake climate change candidates in the upper house with $20,000 alone on polling day in the seat of Balmain, paying Irish back packers to hand out for a fake Climate Change Lower house candidate in order to fool voters. Democracy in NSW has reached an all time low and once again proved that 'whatever it takes' is the guiding principle of the Labor party.
Instead of putting carbon dioxide in the ground the coal corporations put the Balmain Greens in the ground, with the help of Luke Foley and the Labor party!
I've seen some very convincing presentations that claim that putting co2 underground will not work ... why invest more money in a doubtful technology when you can invest in renewables and create new jobs as well. Someone has to bite the bullet, let it be australia.
Hey I did the cinematography on this! Can't believe how you've blended it all together Nick. It's great. I really like the composite of the C02 pump going into the ground. Great stuff!
Hey Karl! This is Kelly under my daughter's account. I just edited the tags so your name would show up..I put KarlLEmmett, okay? I did not forget you - I just could not find your YouTube Account Name. You guys did a fantastic job! It was fun to do, as well. Thanks a lot. Kelly
Clean coal is a myth.The most optimistic forecasts say it will take at least ten years for carbon capture and storage technology to be available for wide spread implementation. The IPCC and the Stern report both made it clear that emissions must be reduced now, not in ten years, if the world is to avoid a very high price.Each unit of energy generated by wind creates four times more jobs than coal.
i understand the demands of advertising, though i feel that forums such as this (you-tube, myspace etc.) are comparatively untested as political vehicles, with an audience who are ready for a little more - with attention spans somewhat longer than the advertising agencies would give credit.
but, in saying this, i also say thanks for keeping up a strong and viable alternate voice in the otherwise homogeneous political landscape in australia. (2/2)
In response to miscellana I am sure the Greens would prefer to make a more complex video explaining why clean coal wont work. I think this was just meant to make the distinction between the policies of Liberal/Labor and the Greens. Lib/Lab are trying to pacify the coal lobby instead of being responsible and investing in new jobs in renewable energy.
while i agree with the sentiments of this piece, it suffers from two things. first it is very much tied to a television advertising paradigm which leads to the second, in that it devotes no time to explanations of its claims. simply saying "but it will not work" is tainted by the arrogance of the major parties who continually imply that we should just trust them, for they, after all, are the experts. (1/2)
I think if you watch it, the idea is that the coal mine closes and the same workers come out, victorious, and immediately are put to work 'planting' windmills. So no jobs are lost but the ecology is spared. It is hard to get all that in one minute. {This is Kelly again}
I've seen some fairly convincing presentations claiming that geosequestration (putting co2 underground) is viable. Naturally I support solar and wind as the best long term solutions, and if I had money to invest it would be in these industries (espcially in India and China), but since we have so much coal and it isn't going to go away, what's wrong with trying to work out how to use it safely?
I'll vote green in this election because you have to vote for someone and we have a serious poverty of leadership in NSW. But I have a question about the message of this video. [next post]

Labor wants to open new coal mines therefore Labor is not serious about fighting global warming.
