Figure skating is not the same, no real stars left. Nothing to watch now days and if I watch I dont remember nothing after. Old time skaters performances are stuck in my hart forever.
@FroMDreamS Sandra Bezic said that at the 2002 Olympics before Michelle skated her exhibition "everybody here is on their feet, success isn't always measured by a gold medal". :)
They placed him 3rd on the long at Lillehammer when in fact it was easily the best long programme that night. OK he wouldn't have won because he was 9th in the short, but that was much better than Urmanov.
Oh, yeah. Even though Scott Hamilton always says that you can't win the Olympic gold with the short program you can definitely lose it, Viktor totally won that gold on the strength of his short program. His long program was mediocre at best. I always have to laugh a little when I watch him, though, because he has one of the longest run ups to his triple axel I've ever seen. The only other person I've seen do such a long one is Todd Eldrege.:)
I've seen Petrenko have a very short entry into the triple axel too. I think I can recall his SP from 1990 having a triple axel out of a back inside edge spiral.
No, it wasn't in violation of the rule. The rule states that if you REPEAT a triple jump, it must be done in combination, otherwise there will be a deduction. Viktor elected to do both in combination, which doesn't hurt him at all. On a side note, if he had done three of the same triples, the third wouldn't count, even if it was done in combination. Skaters are only allowed to repeat the same triples once more, and one of the jumping passes must be in combination.
No. He repeated the triple, which is allowed. You can do the same triple in combination twice if you want. There's no limit on double jumps. If he did two 3axel/3toe combination's he would've violated the rule, assuming he perform another 3 toe later in the program. A good example of the violation is Slutskaya's 2005 winning LP at worlds. She executed the 3 loop three times. One in combo with a lutz, second in a combo with a double loop, and third on it's own.
Petrenko was a marvelous skater - but he did not deserve the 1992 gold. Dick Button said that in his opinion, Petrenko's "win" was the worst gold medal performance of all time. Paul Wylie should have won the gold.

I loved his skating! So beautiful and effortless, and his flow was simply breathtaking. Plus he seemed like a really sweet guy.

He was so great here. Much more interesting to watch than Urmanov. As someone said "success is not always measured by a gold medal"

He really did much better here, than his 1992gold medal performance even!

I agree. This performance was much better than Albertville. He ran out of gas in '92. In this performance he kept the energy going much better.

Whoa, Romania. It was a great performance, but a 5.9 and a 6.0? Hold your horses, there, the medal contenders still haven't gone yet! hahaha

I think Petrenko finished 3rd in the free skate with this program. Lord knows it was 10 times better than the Albertville one.

that was better than his gold winning performance in albertville

isn't his second triple axel combination a violation of the Zayak rule?
owemunar 4 years ago
I wanted to ask this too... He did two 3a-2t combinations... Anyway, what a way to close his amateur career!!!

i think if you do more than two of the same triple jump, that's a violation

Moved up five places after the short? Good for him! A fine program -- actually, better than fine.
