@Nickpatient since i wrote the comment i bought an eiphone lp standard (the guy with the custom was trying to rip me off with an overpriced look-alike), so i currently play the lp
Great demo. You get some sweet tones (clean and overdriven) out of this swingster and you demonstrated a good range of playing styles that this guitar would be suited to- so much more interesting to listen to than the official Epiphone demo. You sold me- Well done
I think it is funny that if Gretsch puts out a Gibby looking guitar Gibson freaks out and goes running to court. Gibson however can out this blatent copy of a Gretsch right down to the design of the pickups and it's OK. You could pull these pickups out and install TV Jones pickups and have a decent 5120 Gretsch I think.
The headstock on Ep's are so dang ugly! Like some kind of european oldmans design! Change it! NOW, lol.....(snicker) please dont ban me, im canadian.hehe
@stratking69er i have the guitar no its just that they havnt put it on properly you just need to make sure its straight but it doesnt even matter i didn't notice any dound differenc just looks a bit wierd but yeah it just they didnt make sure it was straight before tightening it
I have this guitar in black, I use it to play with my band (rock/punk) and solo with a vocalist. Much better than I expected it to be. Build quality is excellent, and the series/parallel system for the pick ups works very very well.
I suspect the pickups are Asian made. My swingster has a "Made in Indonesia" label on it, although the factory is supposedly in China. That being said the pick-ups are pretty impressive for a $600 guitar. Go try one out. If you are going for a rockabilly, classic rock (early 60's George Harrison, early Clapton etc) , blues, swing sound, turn up the volume and play it clean -sound is really good.
does anyone know if the pups in this guitar are USA or far eastern in origin ?
I had a quite nice Epi Les Paul, but the pickups were just awful. They sounded totally gutless and became very microphonic. The bill to replace and fit better quality humbuckers was over £150.
Amplifiers make a huge difference when demoing guitars. This sounds muddy with the distortion, but mine does not with my equipment. I tried the Gretsch 5120 because I used to play a 1964 Tennesesian in a band and was really disappointed, the neck was just not a Gretsch neck, and the pickups were not very good. SIde by side the swingster had a lot better sound in the shop. I'm still working on getting the settings to get the sound - good unplugged and I'm doing a lot of fingerstyle blues
I looked at the electromatic, bad quality & goofy controls, & didn't feel good in my hands, f-holes not binded. [ gretsch WAS my dream, shame on fender! ] artcore, neck wasn''t right for me, nice- good price. SO, can't buy the gibson es, picked up the swingster, 3 different trips to store. Finally bought it! Wine red. "chet" bigsby, great controls, feels good. [ my #2 thumb knuckle doesn't bend, so I play for a short time, neck digs in. No prob.w/ this guitar! ] Acoustic to screamin' covered!!
the gretsch at this price range have awful pickups and they are not as adjustable..i specifically remember buying a 5120 and the bridge pickup couldn't go as high as needed..
this one has far superior pickups and the quality of build is excellent..
man i just picked one up a few days ago and i hated to put it down, i honestly like this better than the gretsch electromatic 5120, i've owned a few of them and well this guitar just blows them out of the water
@ferr811 have you had a go of one? today i went to the guitar shop to test a load of guitars (it was the first time ive ever done that) and i wanted to test a bigsby because im thinking of buying a bigsby to put on my guitar, and i saw this in the orange colour, so i went to the room to test it and got absolutly MEZMERIZED by the guitar! i had already tested high end ibanez and some gibsons but this just blew me away! so if your thinking of getting this, dont think twice, its brilliant!
@MOSEKETEERS Not really a matter of which is better but rather which YOU prefer. This guitar has humbuckers with coil tap which splits the coils to make a single coil sound. Whereas the Casino has P-90 single coil pickups. Me? I love P-90s. They're my favorite pickups, but they can be microphonic and can hum when you crank up the volume, but nothing NOTHING snarls like P-90s when you crank them up. Just listen to George Thorogood's guitar tone. Also this one has the Bigsby...
@MOSEKETEERS This one is based on the ephiphone joe pass. This is more of a jazz box guitar (and rockabilly type guitar). the casino does not have a wammy bar and is more like a gibson es-335 type. it depends what you like - check out the grestch electromatic as well.
@MOSEKETEERS guessin youve already chosen one i've just bought this guitar
and deeply regret it not because its a bad guitar or anythin like that its really good smooth and comfortable to play but you really should just keep a look out for a second hand guitar and youll be able to get somethin twice as good for the same price or cheaper do a bit of research look for demos and stuff like that
Can you remove the trem bar?

Stunning cleans. I'm really tempted by these guitars, though it sounds a little muddy when it's overdriven.
