"Are you going to Leopoldina?" This was the actual first name of the actress that plays Alex's mother. In the cast credits, Madame Constantine, no first name is given.
@xmenz123 How is it phony? Sebastian is in a completely separate room in the house on a different floor, even- with the door shut. He'd need x-ray vision to observe it.
My God the cinematography when Alicia realizes she's been poisoned is just incredible. It's moments like this when Hitchcock's genius is best displayed: he conveys the moment with his shots so brilliantly. Sixty years later and you can still feel her terror with dreadful acuity.
If someone is really being poisoned..even slowly a person is in terrible pain with bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. Not a pretty sight. Not a little feeling of dizziness like here. She would not look sexy in bed either.Still a good movie!
@globe255 Actually, estelle715 has a point. They couldn't use sleeping pills in the coffee because you'd have to use a lot, it would taste really yucky, and it would kill her right away. Sleep meds in small doses would not accumulate over time. They probably used arsenic. When given in small amounts, it accumulates, make you sicker, then kills you. At first you could feel dizzy, drowsy, confused, as Alicia did, but then, as estelle715 wrote, you'd get abdominal pain, vomiting, convulsions.
@ichigorobei You are right they could use arsenic over days, but it doesnt make you sleepy, but sick. She acts like she is very sleepy and is just about to sleep, so therefore my guess is sleeping pills. The sleeping pills they were taking that time was barbiturates (they are very toxic). If you are taking barbiturates often, you will suddenly die from a overdose, because it takes long time to get rid of it, so there will be a lot accumulated in your body. After a certain amount you will die.
@estelle715 You are probably right. See my note to globe255. They would not have used sleeping pills as globe255 suggests, and cyankalium (potassium cyanide) would have killed her off too fast. A slow, cumulative poison like arsenic makes sense, but you are right, she would have eventually developed severe abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, convulsions, coma, death. You are also right that even Bergman could not have survived arsenic poisoning and still managed to look that great!
Beautiful necklace she is wearing in the chair when she realizes that she is being killed. Where is it now? I hope someone has it and they can coordinate it with the movie. It would be a treasure.
@IngridBergmanRocked Yes, have to agree with you. I think that the scene where they're caught in the wine cellar is the most passionate scene I've ever seen in any movie.....where even though she wanted to, she could not have stopped kissing him despite the fact Claude Raines was coming into the cellar.
I love this movie, especially this part to the end. Thank you for posting it. I also agree with another poster that towards the end when Cary goes to Ingrid's bedside to save her is both SEXY and Romantic. Truly, they don't make them like this anymore.
uh... maybe this is an idiotic question but why do they always slide across the seats of the car? can't they just open the door on their side and get out?
Because in older cars, it's like a bench, and they had no seatbelts back then. Why get out on the street door when you can just slide over to the sidewalk door? It's faster..
This is the most incredible scene I have ever known. About 10 minutes of uncut panning in and out and going around the bed. This also happens to be my favorite movie of all time!
Believe it or not, this really happened to someone I know. It sounds incredible, beyond belief. He was dragged into a "cult" by a very popular restaurant in West Hollywood,CA. with a "New Orleans" facade, where he was working. I was a customer. They held him through drugs & hypnosis. I was "poisoned" there one night by a waiter -- it was not fun, believe me. My friend ,I'm glad to report, is now out of it, alive and well. Compared to the drama I witnessed, "Notorious" seems like a comedy!

Gorgeous chair she's seated in.
Probably, it was Hitchcock's and his wife. They had museum quality furniture in their home.

@estelle715 They gave her sleeping pills not cyankalium. There is nothing false about her play, on the contrary.

perhaps there are flaws in this movie (ones I can't see). But no one can deny that Cary and Ingrid have got chemistry.
