Actually the very first sonic screwdriver was used first by the 2nd doctor and it looked like a small metal rod with a light bulb at the end similar the newer ones

One thing there were 2 before the 4th doctors there was a pen light used by the first and second and another one like the masters laser screwdriver and the 4th doctors mixed used by the third early in his regeneration

Not a complete history of the sonic screwdriver, it's a decent video but would have been better if the Original Series permutations were included (obviously these would be covered through pictures).

I believe the picture shown of an Orginal Series screwdriver is from Jon Pertwee's era. The screwdriver was first used in Patrick Troughton's era - it was rather plain looking; notable use in "The War Games".

And the screwdriver left the OS in Peter Davison era serial "The Visitation".

also Patrick troughtons screwdriver was used in The 3ed Doctors first ep, spearhead from space. but its only seen for a few seconds and is used to light and explosive to open a door, AND is never mentioned by the doctor in that ep.

Just in case you didn't know the original sonic screwdriver looked nothing like the one Jon Pertwee had. Troughton's was simply a small wand like prop with a light in the end (almost like a pen).

Actually when the Sonic Screwdriver was first introduced it was very basic, it was like a metal stick with a light on the end...so just a torch really lol. It wasn't until Pertwee/Baker days that the one in this video surfaced.

I just got through watching the last DW With David T. I am sad he has gone, however I am looking forward to the new one in March. I am going to miss David. I think he was by far the best. Time will tell. I really enjoyed your reviews. Great Job! You may want to turn up your mike a tad because the music in the background covers up your speech at times and I cannot hear what you are saying. Keep up the good work. that was mostly used by the 4th doctor, tom baker, but also occationaly the fifth, peter davidson. it was destroyed by the teraptil in the visitation because the producer said it had become a magic wand and could get him out of any situation.

the first sonic did not look anything like that, the first one was partrick troughtons sonic from fury of the deep, a lost episode, it looked like a pen light (it was a pen light) and was used as a screwdriver, literally, it uscrewed things, the second was the jon pertwee one, this was thik, with a yellow tube covered in a spring in the middle, this was conviscated in the frontier in space, that was when he made the sonic that you show from 0:18 to 0:29.

Nah, you got the grey sonic wrong, sorry.

The first toy sonic was the 9th Doctor one, with a yellowy handle, then the second and 3rd came with a notepad and phsycic paper, then the 4th (Which you have) is VERY Different, because instead of having a pen and stuff in it and a UV light, it has a BLUE LED. =D. So sorry about that, but that bit is wrong, and it is more the 2009 version. Good vid though.
