I love yiddish.;;; yiddish is not dead. There are still 2 million at least ,people who speak it, and a growig number of people who learn it, even no Jews. I heard on youtube a tiny jewish girl, Shprintse, and other children and they spoke yiddish... it's really touching and wonderful. I'm certain that yiddish will live, even if Yiddishland disappeared....but maybe one day will Yiddishland reborn.
@Tyrsus it is close to the upper german dialects - it is not far away from austrobavarian except the hebrew elements. But also austrobavarian imported some jiddish - "I hob a massel"
I hate that I can't hear a song in Yiddish without being so sad for what isn't anymore. Even the most innocent lullaby has been violently turned in my mind into a memorial for a culture that has been wiped off the face of the earth...
"Drobne fisele..." again a borrowing from the Bielarusan neighbors... "Drobny" means small, delicate. Khava sings Litvak, but I still like it. BTW, one of the few Yiddish songs sung in my own Mishpukhe back in the 50s Rumania... Another one would be "Oyf'n Pripechik" made famous by the likes of Jan Peerce and also Judy Garland, even though the latter was never credited to Avrum Goldfaden, the father of Yiddish Vaudeville.
It's a language not a dialect, it's called Yiddish (in geman Jiddisch) and it mainly consists of three components: German, Hebrew and Slavic. And as mahvach said, the letters are hebrew too.
I'm studying Yiddish at university, so I ought to know. ;-)

it's so beautiful. this was once part of the culture of my country. Now this dialect is missing, and surely i know quite well what had happened during the nazi regime. But once more and on top of the missing, murdered people i feel deep in my heart, how much more poorer we germans are. Now they are only the words, a reminescence of what once has been. and they are so happy, these songs, even when they are violently sad,
thx for sharing this, Haarhark.godspeed to you all, alexander, germany
So the same can be said about Belarussian which is a form of Russian and Polish.. and actually both Ukrainian and Belarussian are mixtures of the two and other slavic languages.
yiddish, parecido al aleman. lo hablaban los judios en europa antes del holocausto, casi 13 millones de personas en todo el mundo. ahora son menos de 3 millones de hablantes
Thanx, I do speak German, so a lot I can understand, but not all, hope you also want to translate the rest, but I know, it is a bit of work ofcourse.....
I keep marching glad and happy, Crack the hazelnuts and sing: Reyzls little feet are tapping- Down the stairs with gentle ding. There she jumps - I hug her now, Heart beats like a drum,And I kiss her on the brow:Come, come, come!I must tell you, David dear,Never whistle in my lane.Mama gets upset - says: Hear,He is whistling there again.Whistling, she says, isnt
On a small lane, unawares Dreams old house lazily,
There, in tiny loft upstairs Lives my precious Reyzele. Every evening passing near, I walk rounds and hum, Whistle and call: Reyzl, dear, Come, come, come. Startled by the window tinkle Sleepy house wakes to see How stars in heavens twinkle When my Reyzl answers me. Lo, I hear the angels sounds: Wait, soon Ill be free, Walk, my love, few more rounds, One, two, three.
The fact that someone wrote that it sounds funny 4 kim doesnt mean that hes not open for other cultures (btw its still the same culture - the european one). Im from poland and many of my friends from other countries consider my language as a litthe bit funny and im not anry 4 that. chill out people.
When someone comment in capitals that he or she is laughing his f*cking ass off, it isnot meant in a nice way. To think jiddisch sound funny, there is nothing wrong with that, to ridicule it is stupid.
Fantastic song, my mama used to sing it for me, but I didnot understand the words back than. Now I do, but she is not around anymore, this song makes me miss her so much, but it also, like with yudikjon, brings back such happy memories and warm feelings and for that I am realy grateful, thanks a lot.
