It's easy to see just one side. My side. Unless I've actually been through what someone has then I have absolutely no clue. Empathy...I'm strong, independent and beautiful. My strength and growth wasn't an accident. My strength has been drawn through life's lessons and others. This song is an inspiration to women and myself. Like Norm1964 said can we just "enjoy the music".

How many times world leaders+others have said that if women were leading this world there would be no wars.Maybe it's men who have to change-more polite more diplomatic (stereotypically).
If everyone got the salary they truly DESERVE and not just the ones who dare to ask even if they don't deserve it. I'm no feminist and oppose stereotyping. I myself am very androgynic. Being a man/woman is such a small part of one's personality.
We used to be slaves basically and I think that people forget that. Just cuz you're married to someone doesn't make slavery not slavery. Still today women are more polite in their language on average than men they apologise more often they take lower salaries and are more oversealous about what people think of their phisical apearance than men.
Yeah good point. Cept when there's no women doing something it just doesn't seem like we should to some of uss. I do whatever makes me happy :) I sing and write songs and I'm in computer science, hardly anny ladies there. Not like it's a bigger acomplishment than the guys that are there...just sometimes society makes women feel like they don't have permission to do certain things,, with morays and forays, and just residue from our history.
I'm a straight male, and I really like this song. Just answer me this: Why does EVERY woman have to feel empowered before they do anything? If I want to do something, I just freakin' do it. Nobody has to motivate me, or challenge me by saying I can't. Women shouldn't care what society thinks of them anymore than men should. So why do they consider a woman a hero for telling a man like it is, but the man is considered an asshole for doing the same thing?
I like this song too and i am a straight male, but you have made a mistake trying to rationalise womens thought patterns it is fucking impossible to do so They are more complicated then the fucking enigma machine. The only thing you as a man can do is make sure your woman is happy because if she isnt there are two scenarios that can result from that situation 1 massive weight gain on her part 2 divorce and if you are a devout catholic like myself then thats bad social stigma through the roof.
Wow, she looks so different with long hair. When I first saw her in "Wuthering Heights", then looked her up online, I was amazed that it was the same person. It's interesting, really, how much a simple thing like hair can change how we perceive someone. Beautiful voice though, it's so emotional.
Men and women are different. However, men have had the upper hand in the world for thousands of years. So I believe that it is time that we women started kicking ass. I do also think women are stronger (mentally) than men. I mean we have to give birth for gods sake, and thats gotta hurt! Also we get treated like sh#t by men all the time and we cope so yeah. Women are stronger.
yea, well have you heard of matriarch? like whose margaret thatcher eva peron madonna barbara walters and miss piggy? ydo this is a big subject, but the goddess is underground...
yet it is the age of kali...who else is more a sign of these times than kali
when i said mantrolling, i just said it not to add to the ongoing fight going in the comments, just cause i love the song and what it says and Sinead is a great artist.... lover her mantrolling..
As far as the the claim that gender is/isn't relevant ... I believe gender is relevant to some things and is not relevant to others. It's not a black-white subject (nothing is). I do believe that our cultural has MADE gender more relevant than it really IS... that becomes obvious once you learn HOW our culture has done this and how we've been affected. This does not mean gender is COMPLETELY irrelevant ... its just less relevant than society claims.
I believe anyone can post anything they want... that is the joyous result when freedom of speech is upheld. It is, however, showing a higher comprehension when one doesn't resort to stereotypes or namecalling (anyone can do that- it doesnt make you special).
agreed there are biological differences, but that doesnt breed inequality. biology is also is irrelevant to the majority of social/cultural evolutions...
I can see you were looking for a reason to argue and defend your idea of beauty by commenting on my statement that she is gorgeous in this video. I don't care if she has hair or not, but most would agree she looks much more beautiful in this video (with make up, a wig and feminine clothes) that she usually does. Either way, she is a beautiful person.
This is an artist who shaved her head in protest of objectification and expectations. All I'm asking is that you appreciate that.
She did this to fight what your majority would say is beautiful.. until people like you stop thinking that beauty is derived from long hair, makeup, clothes that emphasize body parts, etc... Then women will continue to be objectified.
Get off your soap box and stop acting like a puss. If I chose to comment that a woman looks beautiful for whatever reason, then it is my business. You, my friend, sound like a miserable, pathetich person filled with self-loathing a pity for anything that is considering "the norm". Go back to your little glass house and make yourseld a love bracelet.
Why should I step off the soap box I am sharing with you? You are no better than me like I'm no better than you. We're both human.
You, my friend, sound like a person who doesnt possess a brain of his/her own. I do pity the norm when its unjust because it doesn't take brain power to go along with the rest of the crowd.. that requires ZERO thinking for oneself. I do feel sorry for those who cannot overcome outside influences and come to their own conclusions.
Women are more vain and spend considerably more time getting ready because their appearance is considered their most prized asset in our society. Women are judged solely on level of attractivness all the time. Who does this benefit? It definitely doesn't benefit women.
People want to think that modern day Western Culture is about as good as it gets. People are either too lazy to think about it, uninformed, or don't want to depress themselves because it delivers a feeling of hopelessness and frustration. Just because something has been done a certain way for an extended period of time doesnt mean it is the right way. A society with so many expectations is a limiting society. It limits happiness due to lack of choices if the goal is to remain socially accepted
Yes by using people.. I am generalizing.. I am referring to the people who reinforce the norms of society and view those who rebel to the norm as inferior.
I believe this is one of the reasons Sinead shaved her head.. she shaved as a protest. Women are supposed to be "beautiful" (look up beauty in the dictionary.. it doesnt mention a man)and all to often are judged solely on their physical appearance and nothing else. While men are judged not only on their appearance but a number of other things as well. I love Sinead and she is very brave for shaving her head! I admire women who protest society's expectations.
I think the song/video is about rebelling against the patriarchy that reigns over Western Culture. It starts out with a wedding and a bride... traditionally and presently.. marriage is about ownership of a female by a man. She literally does not want to be a man's woman. Thank you, Sinead! Great song and message!
I don't agree that Western patriarchy is about owning a woman. That's an oversimplification of the history of our civilization. Traditionally, in more violent times, there had to be societal structures to protect women. Women had their own sphere culturally, say in the medieval world. I would argue that what you are positing is basically just tired old feminist rhetoric that doesn't have much to do with reality or history.
Give me a break.. women were seen as property. That is proven simply by the most valid source of history and it's inflictions.. through the laws. Look at the traditional marriage ceremony. The fathe(man) GIVES his daughter away to another man. The man isn't being given to a woman. Women have had their own sphere culturally because they were/are not viewed as being good enough to be involved w/ men's culture. Of course Im generalizing.. nothing applies to every single person in every situation.
I just think this is highly debatable. For one thing, we have to establish what period of history we're even talking about here. As far as the traditional Western act of a father giving his daughter in marriage, well that just reflects the way that society operated. For example, in the medieval world, women were protected by their fathers and brothers until they had a suitable husband to take over the job. The giving in marriage was symbolic of that.
(I think presently is the most important time period to refer to since it affects us most) Yes and society operates patriarchial.. where men are dominant, men's "qualities" are preferred, the pronoun "he" is standard for everyone, men get the work they consider worthy. Present times are still violent for women and the violence that men inact on women is the only reason why a woman would think she needs protection by a man... to protect her from other men.
What is a culture that is not patriarchal? This is a very strong claim. Throughout history in every time and place cultures have been patriarchies. Where do you find a non-patriarchal society?
There are cultures in present day Africa that are considered matriarchial. This would be a Rape-Free society. Look up Rape-Prone vs Rape-Free cultures.
It's highly debatable whether or not those cultures are matriarchal. But regardless of that, the reason that rape does not exist in those socieities is because the people do not consider rape to be an act of violence. Anthropologists have always been puzzled by this. Rape exists everywhere because nature is violent. That's why women have evolved to prefer strong, protective mates who are leaders... so they can be protected from predatory men.
I attended a lecture where the speaker was a women researcher who lived for two years in a culture that is considered matriarchial. People who commited rape there was shunned from society due to their violation of respect of the female.
I dont think women evolved to prefer those traits. I think men decided those were respectable traits for men to have, and men who possess strength and leadership are viewed as superior(or a good catch) by other men and women in our patriarchial society.
I'm just not sure what you mean by "preferred". Men have traditionally been in leadership positions, but that's just because, like you said, men are the protectors (yes, they protect from other men generally, but that's just the reality of the human condition). That being said, violence doesn't just happen in the form of men being violent toward women. There is plenty of violence that is exchanged between women as well.
then tell me...what is the role of a male once a woman can deffend herself with a gun or know karate? what is the role of a man in society when women are educated and making their own money working and also taking care of children if she choses to have any? in today's society women are dependant and able to give birth, we are self sufficient and the only thing holding us down at this point are the stereotypes made by men. what will be there role when we break their final grip?
Women love men. They can't get enough of us. You should see the way a woman's face lights up every time I pursue her and give her my attention. I love making women feel great like that. Plus, I think women love snuggling with us men at night. As one girl I know says, "there's nothing like having your big strong man in bed with you when things are going bump in the night outside." :)
the same can be said about men loving women. men enjoy chasing women, you should see their faces when they run after me for attention. ^^ i have to dissagree with needing a man at night, let alone a big strong one. i dont see men as protectors but as partners. they pay half the bills and we both go check what the noise outside was. i suppose it all depends on what kind of person you are. im very independant and could spend 3 months a year with my partner, while some wish to be handcuffed forever
Women can completely sustain themselves today. We are stronger than ever before and there is little we can't do. Women are extremely capable and the men who think they are doing women a favor by just looking at them have another thing coming. As to needing a man when something goes "bump" in the night, all I need is my shotgun.
Traditionally men don't do a certain kind of work because they prefer it, but because it falls into a masculine sphere (hunting, protecting, warfare, politics), whereas women have traditionally taken on the administration of the domestic world (child-rearing, household management, etc). I think that most cultures throughout history have considered both to be crucial roles.
Do u seriously believe that? If men didnt choose their positions because they thought it was more important work to be done by more important people then why couldn't women vote till less than a century ago. Women couldn't even get loans, etc without a man's signature along with hers. A world controlled by men is only going to reflect a man's opinion of how HE thinks it should be.. he is more concerned with his own well being. This is why we desperately need more women auhtority figures.
In most states prior to the 20th Century, women only did not vote if they were married, because the idea was that each family got a vote. Widows and single women voted throughout most of our history. There have always been women leaders. But most of them haven't been interested in changing the gender roles. Look, I'm just arguing that there are inherently masculine and feminine qualities that cannot be altered regardless of our ideology and basically all cultures reflect this. Rsrch backs it up.
I think you're correct that historically marriage has been about a sort of ownership of women. Hopefully that influence is much less today than you're suggesting.
I'd suggest that people write their own vows to make clear what exactly their marriage means to them, that way you're establishing what it means for you as an individual instead of just making assumptions about what the norm is.
I also agree that we've made huge leaps in progress, and it isn't as ownership based as it once was. Yes, people should discuss what marriage means to them before they do it. It's romantized a lot though and lots of people dont take the time to think through the commitment they are making. I also agree it should be more individualized instead of norm based.
A man isn't "given" to a woman in marriage because a woman is not expected to provide physical protection for her husband. But the domestic domain of a husband's life does become her sphere at that point. The beginning of a knight's training was with the women of the manor, who instructed him as a child in manners, spirituality and social responsibility when he was a small child. Once he was a teenager, the men took over to begin his military training.
Now that looks to me like a society with a deep respect for the feminine influence. There can be no doubt that medieval chivalry placed women on a pedistal. I think what you might be doing here is mistaking the fact that women weren't a part of a masculine sphere for their not being important in society. Today we expect women to be in the business world being cut throat right along with men and somehow that means they have equal rights. It as if we believe women aren't free unless they're manly.
The reason women have to have masculine qualities to be successful in the business world is because qualities that are considered masculine are what a patriarchial society prizes. In reality, I dont think that women and men are THAT different.. our environmental influences creates the mentality that we are polar opposite, completely different in most aspects... when we're not.. we're all human.
Also, is patriarchy bad? Maybe it's the natural way of doing things. Maybe women naturally prefer to have strong men who are capable of leadership in their lives rather than soft, unassertive men. It might very well be an evolutionary strategy to keep the species going. That seems to be what history tells us.
You must remember who history was recorded by. Most of our records have men authors. It's all from a man's perspective. We greatly lack the point of view of the female in cultures. I, for one, do not prefer protection or an overly assertive man. So, yes patriarchy is bad for those people who don't want a male domineering lifestyle. I dont think it's evolution that designated our present day roles.. I think thats environment.. we are brainwashed from birth to reflect the organ between our legs.
There are actually a fair amount of examples of history recorded by women. For example, Anna Comnena was a Byzantine chronicler. But anyway, I do not doubt that environment shapes to some extent our conception of gender. But you cannot deny that nature is a huge influence too. Otherwise, why would so much of masculinity and femininity be recognizable to us throughout so many cultures and periods? To totally dimiss natural sexual influences seems not consistent with the evidence.
Women did not vote at all prior to 1920.. black men got their vote in the 1800s. Compare the amount recorded by men then the amount recorded by women. Women and men are not identical, but a lot closer in relation that society portrays. We're not opposites. Obviously nature and nurture both play their role, but think about all the ways a parent treats a girl different from a boy. Why has it persisted so long... look up the birdcage analogy in detail.
Yes women did vote prior to 1920. Widows and single women voted during some periods prior to the 20th Cent. Look, the reason parents treat their children differently is because they act differently. I have tons of little cousins, and I can tell you now the litte boys want to play army and the girls want to play house. It's amazing how that happens, but it does.
boys and girls act the same when they come out of the womb. They are trained through interactions, TV, their parents, etc to behave certain ways. They are treated differently and they react to the differential treatments in different ways. They learn to view themselves, not as a human, but as a girl or a boy. It doesnt JUST happen that girls wear dresses and play with barbies .. that is clearly environmental. Not just ingrained in parents and family but our whole society reinforces this.
I agree that environment has something to do with perception of one's own gender. But what you are positing is that the totality of gender identity is the result of conditioning. This is absurd. Why, then, have boys throughout time and cultures played war, while girls throughout time and place have liked dolls? Why did little Muslim boys growing up in 9th Century Damascus play war games while little medieval Japanese girls had dolls? Because gender has inherent qualities as well, obviously.
I mean, look at what European explorers found in North America in the 16th and 17th Centuries. They found, among the native peoples, that the boys went out hunting with their fathers, and the women liked to dress up and taught their daughters how to primp. Obviously the fact that our girls play with Barbies and our boys play with GI Joe is a cultural thing, but it's rooted in something universal about maleness and femaleness.
I also disagree that boys and girls act the same even as tiny infants. A girl I go to college with, she and her husband just had a baby boy, and even at a few months he likes to jolt around when you hold him and he grabs a things fiercely and roughly. Whereas another young couple I know have a baby girl who even seems to hold her hands in a feminine way. She's gentler, calmer. There are profound differences in men and women. And they're very beautiful and poetic. I am intrigued by this subject.
all of your examples of girls liking dolls & boys liking war does not prove we're innately different. I don't think you are realizing the impact that males have had on most cultures.. in the patriarchial societies, men control everything. Men were the ones who were allowed to be educated, make decisions, provide, be independent, etc etc. Men control politics, religion, science, history, psychology, philosophy, society, media, business.. everything except things that can be done within the home.
One of the reasons that patriarchy has survived so well is due to religion. Every single one of the world's major religions is patriarchial & considers women the weaker sex. No, girls and boys are not identical bc we have different reproductive organs resulting in different horomones, etc. There have been lots of studies done that say people act the way they think they are being perceived. If parents look at their daughter as delicate & the child knows this, then the daughter will act delicately
More specifically the reasons that dominate & subordinate roles persist is due to psychological, physical, emotional, & self-inflicted reasons. All of these working together to keep the societal structure. Those who rebel against this structure are outcasted by society. This is called "structural discrimination." It's so imbedded in us that it can be very hard to see. Historically in some instances, women who rebelled against patriarcial roles were not just outcasted but killed or imprisoned.
So basically what you're positing is that patriarchal society, which has existed everywhere at every time, is the result of men being bossy and wanting control, and has nothing to do with feminine influence? You don't give women much credit. In addition, you continue to resist the reality that whatever constructs we might create for gender are also inevitably rooted in something very real in our nature. I'm sorry, your arguments are just weak.
Women are physically more delicate than men. It's biology. Scientists now know that female heart tissue is actually more delicate than male heart tissue. The idea that this is all societal construct is just absurd. It's in nature. Our cultures influence us, but nature built all of our cultures to begin with.
People get uncomfortable when it's questionable whether a person is a boy or a girl. Many physical differences have been created so that we can distinguish easily. Some traditionally and some present.. women have long hair (thats straightened, curled, or dyed), shaved bodies, weight and appearance matters more, bejeweled ears, dresses, plucked brows, make up on face, jewelry, painted nails, etc. We wear clothes that emphasize our breasts, butt, or whatever. All done for viewing pleasure of men.
What people? All people? That's a generalized statement. Women from all cultures throughout all times have primped and dressed up. It's obviously a feminine thing. It's inherent. There are different ways of doing it, but it's always done. That implies that it's a part of our nature. You assertion that it must completely the result of condition is outrageous and would require an incredibly fantastic amount of research. All fo the viewing pleasure of men? Nonsense. It's a part of womanhood.
The history of women primping in no way implies that primping is innate. Do you think cave women primped? You are denying the impact males have had. No, I'm not discrediting women. A person only knows what they are taught if they have no other resources. It's not the womens fault that they were and are oppressed. Like I said a combination of psychological, physical, economical, and self-inflicted factors have encouraged the survival.
It wasn't till recent that women were allowed education. How can one change their status in life if they know nothing about their status in life and why their status is the way it is? It's a very similar case for black people and other minorities.
Primping is a part of feminity and womanhood because patriarcial societies have formed this as the norm. Obviously, the norm is what is mainstream and accepted. Women primp and o a variety of other things because they see themselves as profoundly ugly and must fix themselves to be beautiful.. due to men's development of what makes a female attractive.
It is a fact of nature that boys and girls ARE different. I was encouraged as a little girl to get a dress for my birthday but I wanted a basketball (and that's what I got despite Mom's adamant disapproval). Just because we may be encouraged or even ordered to take a prescribed path does not mean it will happen. I'm the girl playing cowboys/indians not dolls, etc. There will always be exceptions to the norm but due to NATURE there never has been nor will ever be a predominantly female military.
Different on some levels.. obviously. The toys that you play with and the military has nothing to do with nature because both of those things are man-made. By giving those examples.. you are not giving any evidence to prove your point.
My point has everything to do with nature and it's not helping that YouTube is slacking on quite a number of features such as keeping our comments in the prescribed locations. What's up with YT? I can no longer remove fav vids I'm done using? I cannot page back one page only it takes me back to the start of my account? Etc., ARGH!!!
shut up , get with the program..so shes gay..who cares...stop passing judgement on others , let people live life how they want..do you ever wonder if someone is passing judgement on you ?? how would you deal with it ???
This song is about discovering the devotion and love of our creator through music. It has nothing to do with her being a lesbian, or denouncing her love for men, etc. It's about ascension, enlightenment and freedom.
It's about spiritual death while in the grips of societal constraints and rules, rebelling, then resurrecting through creativity, embracing the love of God, and ultimately -- spiritual emancipation.
ALL THANKS AND Praises be to the almighty father and MOTHER of creation as I would really tell ya !!!!!expose all corruption and all those who worketh in the ways of Satan,CRUSH DEMONIC MALE POWER EVERYWHERE !!!
Jah Rastafari, those who walketh in truth, are all one...Lioness Sinead and I&I are living proof that no prejudice,no human judgement and their preoccupation with who one loves in life discourage us or turn us away from GOD..IVERYTHING IS RELATIVE,GOD has both feminine and masculine quality, everything flow,u dont have 2 be gay,u dont have 2 be straight,GOD JUST IS !!!JAH RASTAFARI,EMPRESS MENEN,MOTHER AND FATHER OF CREATION!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh please!!! 'God has both feminine and masculine quality'????? Read Dawkins' 'The God Delusion' you pitiful religious man! God is a word with no meaning in it, God is a word with no personality, There is no God in this world. No any form of god existence! wake up!!
and u claim to be someone who KNOWS about God lashing out at those who dont see things your way and have the idiot audacity to throw sorry literature at something that comes from Life experience and just plain TRUTH!!U
And by the way use someone else's video to spew your sorry DEMONIC HATRED,now go look in the mirror and simmer in your hateful demonic poison that is after you take your medication !
that's true, god is whatever we perceive him/she/it to be. i could worship a tree and call it god; the whole concept is all conceived by man- and labelled as 'god'.
They way I see, it we don't know for sure what is or isn't out there. So let's agree to at least treat others with respect, regardless of whether their beliefs coincide with ours, ok?
This song flies over most peoples' heads.. What she's saying is that no human love could rival or supersede the awe-inspiring devotion to the almighty.
I love the metaphoric of the old Sinead dying on the ground, and no one except the Rastafarians tending to her. Notice how they're shimmering with golden light, signifying their spiritual ascension. It's touching to see their concern in the wake of a complete stranger (to them) collapse on the ground. This video is amazing!
Cuz thats what Rastafari is !believe me when I say that this video touches me in ways that are so amazing 2 me ,as is this entire album!I am Rasta and I am gay,,,This lioness walks in ABSOLUTE TRUTH !!Jah bless Beloved !
Yes 75andalive, this album is definitely amazing from beginning to end. Some of the lyrics and metaphors are esoteric, hence the confusion of many people over it's context. Many blessings to you!

I can see you were looking for a reason to argue and defend your idea of beauty by commenting on my statement that she is gorgeous in this video. I don't care if she has hair or not, but most would agree she looks much more beautiful in this video (with make up, a wig and feminine clothes) that she usually does. Either way, she is a beautiful person.
siciliansummer 3 years ago
This is an artist who shaved her head in protest of objectification and expectations. All I'm asking is that you appreciate that.
She did this to fight what your majority would say is beautiful.. until people like you stop thinking that beauty is derived from long hair, makeup, clothes that emphasize body parts, etc... Then women will continue to be objectified.

Get off your soap box and stop acting like a puss. If I chose to comment that a woman looks beautiful for whatever reason, then it is my business. Women are more vain and spend considerably more time getting ready because their appearance is considered their most prized asset in our society. Women are judged solely on level of attractivness all the time. Who does this benefit? It definitely doesn't benefit women.
humphrey654 3 years ago 2
People want to think that modern day Western Culture is about as good as it gets. People are either too lazy to think about it, uninformed, or don't want to depress themselves because it delivers a feeling of hopelessness and frustration. Just because something has been done a certain way for an extended period of time doesnt mean it is the right way. A society with so many expectations is a limiting society. It limits happiness due to lack of choices if the goal is to remain socially accepted
humphrey654 3 years ago
Yes by using people.. I am generalizing.. I am referring to the people who reinforce the norms of society and view those who rebel to the norm as inferior.
humphrey654 3 years ago

Great song and message!
jade3222 3 years ago 2
I don't agree that Western patriarchy is about owning a woman. That's an oversimplification of the history of our civilization. Traditionally, in more violent times, there had to be societal structures to protect women. Women had their own sphere culturally, say in the medieval world. I would argue that what you are positing is basically just tired old feminist rhetoric that doesn't have much to do with reality or history.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
Give me a break.. women were seen as property. That is proven simply by the most valid source of history and it's inflictions.. through the laws. Look at the traditional marriage ceremony. The fathe(man) GIVES his daughter away to another man. The man isn't being given to a woman. Women have had their own sphere culturally because they were/are not viewed as being good enough to be involved w/ men's culture. Of course Im generalizing.. nothing applies to every single person in every situation.
jade3222 3 years ago
I just think this is highly debatable. For one thing, we have to establish what period of history we're even talking about here. As far as the traditional Western act of a father giving his daughter in marriage, well that just reflects the way that society operated. For example, in the medieval world, women were protected by their fathers and brothers until they had a suitable husband to take over the job. The giving in marriage was symbolic of that.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
(I think presently is the most important time period to refer to since it affects us most) Yes and society operates patriarchial.. where men are dominant, men's "qualities" are preferred, the pronoun "he" is standard for everyone, men get the work they consider worthy. Present times are still violent for women and the violence that men inact on women is the only reason why a woman would think she needs protection by a man... to protect her from other men.
jade3222 3 years ago
Research has been done in cultures that are not considered patriarchial(like ours) and crimes like rape are almost non existant.
jade3222 3 years ago
What is a culture that is not patriarchal? This is a very strong claim. Throughout history in every time and place cultures have been patriarchies. Where do you find a non-patriarchal society?
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
There are cultures in present day Africa that are considered matriarchial. This would be a Rape-Free society. Look up Rape-Prone vs Rape-Free cultures.
humphrey654 3 years ago
It's highly debatable whether or not those cultures are matriarchal. But regardless of that, the reason that rape does not exist in those socieities is because the people do not consider rape to be an act of violence. Anthropologists have always been puzzled by this. Rape exists everywhere because nature is violent. That's why women have evolved to prefer strong, protective mates who are leaders... so they can be protected from predatory men.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
I attended a lecture where the speaker was a women researcher who lived for two years in a culture that is considered matriarchial. People who commited rape there was shunned from society due to their violation of respect of the female.
humphrey654 3 years ago
In this society that the researcher lived in.. men played an active role in childrearing. I thought that was interesting.
humphrey654 3 years ago
I dont think women evolved to prefer those traits. I think men decided those were respectable traits for men to have, and men who possess strength and leadership are viewed as superior(or a good catch) by other men and women in our patriarchial society.
humphrey654 3 years ago
I'm just not sure what you mean by "preferred". Men have traditionally been in leadership positions, but that's just because, like you said, men are the protectors (yes, they protect from other men generally, but that's just the reality of the human condition). That being said, violence doesn't just happen in the form of men being violent toward women. There is plenty of violence that is exchanged between women as well.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
then tell me...what is the role of a male once a woman can deffend herself with a gun or know karate? what is the role of a man in society when women are educated and making their own money working and also taking care of children if she choses to have any? in today's society women are dependant and able to give birth, we are self sufficient and the only thing holding us down at this point are the stereotypes made by men. what will be there role when we break their final grip?
Sin355 3 years ago
Women love men. They can't get enough of us. You should see the way a woman's face lights up every time I pursue her and give her my attention. I love making women feel great like that. Plus, I think women love snuggling with us men at night. As one girl I know says, "there's nothing like having your big strong man in bed with you when things are going bump in the night outside." :)
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
the same can be said about men loving women. men enjoy chasing women, you should see their faces when they run after me for attention.
Sin355 3 years ago
Women can completely sustain themselves today. We are stronger than ever before and there is little we can't do. Women are extremely capable and the men who think they are doing women a favor by just looking at them have another thing coming. As to needing a man when something goes "bump" in the night, all I need is my shotgun.
WiccaChick77 3 years ago
Traditionally men don't do a certain kind of work because they prefer it, but because it falls into a masculine sphere (hunting, protecting, warfare, politics), whereas women have traditionally taken on the administration of the domestic world (child-rearing, household management, etc). I think that most cultures throughout history have considered both to be crucial roles.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
Do u seriously believe that? If men didnt choose their positions because they thought it was more important work to be done by more important people then why couldn't women vote till less than a century ago. Women couldn't even get loans, etc without a man's signature along with hers. A world controlled by men is only going to reflect a man's opinion of how HE thinks it should be.. he is more concerned with his own well being. This is why we desperately need more women auhtority figures.
shaymar22 3 years ago 2
In most states prior to the 20th Century, women only did not vote if they were married, because the idea was that each family got a vote. Widows and single women voted throughout most of our history. There have always been women leaders. But most of them haven't been interested in changing the gender roles. Look, I'm just arguing that there are inherently masculine and feminine qualities that cannot be altered regardless of our ideology and basically all cultures reflect this. Rsrch backs it up.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
I think you're correct that historically marriage has been about a sort of ownership of women. Hopefully that influence is much less today than you're suggesting.
I'd suggest that people write their own vows to make clear what exactly their marriage means to them, that way you're establishing what it means for you as an individual instead of just making assumptions about what the norm is.
comradepinko 3 years ago
I also agree that we've made huge leaps in progress, and it isn't as ownership based as it once was. Yes, people should discuss what marriage means to them before they do it. It's romantized a lot though and lots of people dont take the time to think through the commitment they are making. I also agree it should be more individualized instead of norm based.
jade3222 3 years ago
A man isn't "given" to a woman in marriage because a woman is not expected to provide physical protection for her husband. But the domestic domain of a husband's life does become her sphere at that point. The beginning of a knight's training was with the women of the manor, who instructed him as a child in manners, spirituality and social responsibility when he was a small child. Once he was a teenager, the men took over to begin his military training.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
Now that looks to me like a society with a deep respect for the feminine influence. There can be no doubt that medieval chivalry placed women on a pedistal. I think what you might be doing here is mistaking the fact that women weren't a part of a masculine sphere for their not being important in society. Today we expect women to be in the business world being cut throat right along with men and somehow that means they have equal rights. It as if we believe women aren't free unless they're manly.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
The reason women have to have masculine qualities to be successful in the business world is because qualities that are considered masculine are what a patriarchial society prizes. In reality, I dont think that women and men are THAT different.. our environmental influences creates the mentality that we are polar opposite, completely different in most aspects... when we're not.. we're all human.
shaymar22 3 years ago
Also, is patriarchy bad? Maybe it's the natural way of doing things. Maybe women naturally prefer to have strong men who are capable of leadership in their lives rather than soft, unassertive men. It might very well be an evolutionary strategy to keep the species going. That seems to be what history tells us.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
You must remember who history was recorded by. Most of our records have men authors. It's all from a man's perspective. We greatly lack the point of view of the female in cultures. I, for one, do not prefer protection or an overly assertive man. So, yes patriarchy is bad for those people who don't want a male domineering lifestyle. I dont think it's evolution that designated our present day roles.. I think thats environment.. we are brainwashed from birth to reflect the organ between our legs.
tigress8787 3 years ago 3
There are actually a fair amount of examples of history recorded by women. For example, Anna Comnena was a Byzantine chronicler. But anyway, I do not doubt that environment shapes to some extent our conception of gender. But you cannot deny that nature is a huge influence too. Otherwise, why would so much of masculinity and femininity be recognizable to us throughout so many cultures and periods? To totally dimiss natural sexual influences seems not consistent with the evidence.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
Women did not vote at all prior to 1920.. black men got their vote in the 1800s. Compare the amount recorded by men then the amount recorded by women. Women and men are not identical, but a lot closer in relation that society portrays. We're not opposites. Obviously nature and nurture both play their role, but think about all the ways a parent treats a girl different from a boy. Why has it persisted so long... look up the birdcage analogy in detail.
humphrey654 3 years ago
Yes women did vote prior to 1920. Widows and single women voted during some periods prior to the 20th Cent. Look, the reason parents treat their children differently is because they act differently. I have tons of little cousins, and I can tell you now the litte boys want to play army and the girls want to play house. It's amazing how that happens, but it does.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
boys and girls act the same when they come out of the womb. Not just ingrained in parents and family but our whole society reinforces this.
humphrey654 3 years ago
I agree that environment has something to do with perception of one's own gender. But what you are positing is that the totality of gender identity is the result of conditioning. This is absurd. Why, then, have boys throughout time and cultures played war, while girls throughout time and place have liked dolls? Why did little Muslim boys growing up in 9th Century Damascus play war games while little medieval Japanese girls had dolls? Because gender has inherent qualities as well, obviously.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
I mean, look at what European explorers found in North America in the 16th and 17th Centuries. They found, among the native peoples, that the boys went out hunting with their fathers, and the women liked to dress up and taught their daughters how to primp. Obviously the fact that our girls play with Barbies and our boys play with GI Joe is a cultural thing, but it's rooted in something universal about maleness and femaleness.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
I also disagree that boys and girls act the same even as tiny infants. A girl I go to college with, she and her husband just had a baby boy, and even at a few months he likes to jolt around when you hold him and he grabs a things fiercely and roughly. Whereas another young couple I know have a baby girl who even seems to hold her hands in a feminine way. She's gentler, calmer. There are profound differences in men and women. And they're very beautiful and poetic. I am intrigued by this subject.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
all of your examples of girls liking dolls & boys liking war does not prove we're innately different. I don't think you are realizing the impact that males have had on most cultures.. in the patriarchial societies, men control everything. Men were the ones who were allowed to be educated, make decisions, provide, be independent, etc etc. Men control politics, religion, science, history, psychology, philosophy, society, media, business.. everything except things that can be done within the home.
humphrey654 3 years ago
One of the reasons that patriarchy has survived so well is due to religion. Every single one of the world's major religions is patriarchial & considers women the weaker sex. No, girls and boys are not identical bc we have different reproductive organs resulting in different horomones, etc. There have been lots of studies done that say people act the way they think they are being perceived. If parents look at their daughter as delicate & the child knows this, then the daughter will act delicately
humphrey654 3 years ago
More specifically the reasons that dominate & subordinate roles persist is due to psychological, physical, emotional, & self-inflicted reasons. All of these working together to keep the societal structure. Those who rebel against this structure are outcasted by society. This is called "structural discrimination." It's so imbedded in us that it can be very hard to see. Historically in some instances, women who rebelled against patriarcial roles were not just outcasted but killed or imprisoned.
humphrey654 3 years ago
So basically what you're positing is that patriarchal society, which has existed everywhere at every time, is the result of men being bossy and wanting control, and has nothing to do with feminine influence? You don't give women much credit. In addition, you continue to resist the reality that whatever constructs we might create for gender are also inevitably rooted in something very real in our nature. I'm sorry, your arguments are just weak.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
Women are physically more delicate than men. It's biology. Scientists now know that female heart tissue is actually more delicate than male heart tissue. The idea that this is all societal construct is just absurd. It's in nature. Our cultures influence us, but nature built all of our cultures to begin with.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
I keep saying we do have some differences. That is undeniable. However, the differences are not nearly as vast as society claims... that is my point.
humphrey654 3 years ago
People get uncomfortable when it's questionable whether a person is a boy or a girl. Many physical differences have been created so that we can distinguish easily. Some traditionally and some present.. women have long hair (thats straightened, curled, or dyed), shaved bodies, weight and appearance matters more, bejeweled ears, dresses, plucked brows, make up on face, jewelry, painted nails, etc. We wear clothes that emphasize our breasts, butt, or whatever. All done for viewing pleasure of men.
humphrey654 3 years ago 2
What people? All people? That's a generalized statement. Women from all cultures throughout all times have primped and dressed up. It's obviously a feminine thing. It's inherent. There are different ways of doing it, but it's always done. That implies that it's a part of our nature. You assertion that it must completely the result of condition is outrageous and would require an incredibly fantastic amount of research. All fo the viewing pleasure of men? Nonsense. It's a part of womanhood.
IsabellaInc 3 years ago
The history of women primping in no way implies that primping is innate. Do you think cave women primped? You are denying the impact males have had. No, I'm not discrediting women. A person only knows what they are taught if they have no other resources. It's not the womens fault that they were and are oppressed. Like I said a combination of psychological, physical, economical, and self-inflicted factors have encouraged the survival.
humphrey654 3 years ago
It wasn't till recent that women were allowed education. How can one change their status in life if they know nothing about their status in life and why their status is the way it is? It's a very similar case for black people and other minorities.
humphrey654 3 years ago
Primping is a part of feminity and womanhood because patriarcial societies have formed this as the norm. Obviously, the norm is what is mainstream and accepted. Women primp and o a variety of other things because they see themselves as profoundly ugly and must fix themselves to be beautiful.. due to men's development of what makes a female attractive.
humphrey654 3 years ago
It is a fact of nature that boys and girls ARE different. I was encouraged as a little girl to get a dress for my birthday but I wanted a basketball (and that's what I got despite Mom's adamant disapproval). Just because we may be encouraged or even ordered to take a prescribed path does not mean it will happen. I'm the girl playing cowboys/indians not dolls, etc. There will always be exceptions to the norm but due to NATURE there never has been nor will ever be a predominantly female military.
visualvirtue 3 years ago
Different on some levels.. obviously. The toys that you play with and the military has nothing to do with nature because both of those things are man-made. By giving those examples.. you are not giving any evidence to prove your point.
humphrey654 3 years ago
My point has everything to do with nature and it's not helping that YouTube is slacking on quite a number of features such as keeping our comments in the prescribed locations. What's up with YT? This song is about discovering the devotion and love of our creator through music. It has nothing to do with her being a lesbian, or denouncing her love for men, etc. It's about ascension, enlightenment and freedom.
It's about spiritual death while in the grips of societal constraints and rules, rebelling, then resurrecting through creativity, embracing the love of God, and ultimately -- spiritual emancipation.

Oh please!!! 'God has both feminine and masculine quality'????? Read Dawkins' 'The God Delusion' you pitiful religious man! God is a word with no meaning in it, God is a word with no personality, There is no God in this world. No any form of god existence! wake up!!

that's true, god is whatever we perceive him/she/it to be. i could worship a tree and call it god; the whole concept is all conceived by man- and labelled as 'god'.
god could be anything.

They way I see, it we don't know for sure what is or isn't out there. So let's agree to at least treat others with respect, regardless of whether their beliefs coincide with ours, ok?

75andalive,
This song flies over most peoples' heads..

Yes 75andalive, this album is definitely amazing from beginning to end. Some of the lyrics and metaphors are esoteric, hence the confusion of many people over it's context. Many blessings to you!
