back in the days of UN Squadron and Capcom hits, i think music was equal to graphics, it was equally important in terms of the gaming experience. Today, music is only meant to suppliment the gameplay, so it sounds kindof impartial and overly-dramatic, also very rythmic with little emphasis on melody. Man, today i think with all the things you have to concentrate on in a video game that aren't intuitive, i think i'd just pause the game and listen to this if th soundtrack was this good. I miss 2d.
And also, this song would have been awesome for "Jet Stingray's Theme" from Megaman X4. I can think of countless other examples. But this song is one of them.
16-bit graphics at that time were amazing. It blew everyones minds just much as todays games do.
I think JokinJoe is onto the right track here, technology is going up and really, you don't need to try THAT hard to make an epic movie score, once you master a music program. Most recorded sounds sound generic and much like the stuff we already listen to on a daily basis, so the songs fade quickly AND the fact that artists today tend to rip so many melodies off, it turns into white noise, and fades
I don't think it's graphics that's the problem, I think that nowadays, it's easier to compose music for games because video game composers can now use any sounds they want. It's easy to just make up simple beats with easy chord progression and get away with it. Back then, we had 8-bit sound chips and you couldn't get away with making crap music. You had to make catchy melodies to compensate for the lack of sound quality.
I still don't understand why old school video game music sound so better than today's video game music to me. It's not only nostalgia, i discovered this game with emulator and i still think it's better than toady's video game music
I think it mostly has to do with the fact that back in those pixelated days the graphics were not as astounding as today so the music had to convince even more. today the graphic quality seems to be the only important thing next to gameplay. only games i remember which had good music were the metal gear solid and silent hill series. But you're right those retro tunes are the best mainly because they're 90% melody (and mostly awesome ones)
@mrnuage If you notice, in modern video game reviews (like IGN or Gamespot) music is not one of the main categories rated. They MIGHT mention the music throughout the review (especially if it sticks out like in older games), but it is not an important factor for these newer generations that mostly base their entertainment on what console they own (gives them message board and wii-hater points) and how the graphics look. To them graphics are always tops, everything else is secondary.
@TheLivingHermit1 Katamari has one of the most amazing sound tracks I've heard in years. With the exception of Nobuo, I don't think there are even a handful of games which can compare.
@TheLivingHermit1 So in other words, people would only like games that looks pretty but has farts for music than games that looked okay visually but having an epic soundtrack?
Hey guys, is it just me, or does this song sound kinda similar to Wood Man's theme in MM2? This isn't a criticism (really, I love this theme); it's just something I think I noticed and I'm wondering I'm crazy or not.
This is one of my top favorite songs from the game. For some reason it always gave me that sort of surf music feel to it. Its quite an addictive tune even today.

Great music from a great game. This track has a lot of depth, just like most of the other songs in Area 88! Gotta love Capcom's old style of music :)

Capcom made some really awesome songs back in the days with their older releases.
