@averyellis Homebrew is not stealing, it's modding. Stealing would imply that you took something of value without paying. Hacking a Wii and installing MPlayer (free, open source software) is not really stealing anything
i think its fake, u putted the dvd upside down. I think u backed up the movie to a usb flash drive and then played it with the homebrew app saying its the dvd, but i dont think it is.
@FabioNintendo i also modded my 4.3 wii and i can also watch dvd's :))) ! it isn't upside down, the mirror side is at the sd card port side... so it isn't upside down!
I have a question: Why can't my Wii load the freaking DVD?!?!?!?! I have the M-Player, and I inserted the DVD disc, and I wait for about 5 minutes, it still doesn't load... Can you please help? =S
Yea Ive attempted it recently. Didnt work for me... :( Probably because I have the newest menu version. But homebrew and everything else works! Just no DVD playback :(
Guys this guy has a blog, which talks about it, but it links to a scam site, which is no coincidence. You get do this for free on the website NEVER PAY FOR HOMEBREW
its not a good idea to put the disc into the wii till your about to watch the movie otherwise the wii has trouble reading it while your on the system menu and it just slowly gradually breaksdown the wii dvd drive
i put the dvd in mine, and when i hit play it stays on that same screen, no matter how long i let it sit. is there anything else i need aside from homebrew and mplayer? ( i have v4.2 on my wii btw)
since i have version 4.1 I have to use the bannerbomb method...but can someone tell me, what does this whole procedure actually do to your wii to allow you to run homebrew? does it actually like hack/alter the wii in anyway or is it purely just running programs from the sd card. i just want to install the homebrew channel so i can watch dvds...don't want to do anything to the wii so i can't keep updating.
btw is this what people use to play backup/downloaded wii games? or is that different?
as far as i know, its just running it off of the SD card, because it has to be in for it to work, and to play the back up games is a mod chip, its like wiikey i think is what its called
if you have updated past 3.4 (i think) then you cannot install it the normal way which is through the use of a hacked legend of zelda twilight princess save and an sd card.
If you have 4.0 or above then the only way to install it is through bannerbomb, go to hackmii(dot)com to find out how, all you need is an sd card
if you have wii menu 4.0 or higher you don't need to have the game. which is Zelda, twilight princess or whatever. with the newer wii menu all you do is just put the hack on the sd card, doesn't have to be the wii one, and upload it in the settings, easy easy.
great song and movie choices my wi has the homebrew channel but i couldnt download mplayer i was told i needed the homebrew browser so ill try that tomorrow
@360Spider lol i like how every one kept telling u that, u inserted the disc upside down, i sat there and studied it, you didnt lmao dam trolls huh haha, anyways, people who say he did, i think ur wii is broken, might wanna get it checked out, it is possible considering the fact with the homebrew channel u can also play roms from older systems so :P dam trolls!
Subtitles, yes I believe so. At least I think the newest version of mplayer supports them. Surround sound? Probably not. The Wii only had left and right audio outputs anyways. All the features of a normal DVD player? It plays DVD's. That's all I have ever expected my DVD player to do.
ok, question: i wanna get this homebre thing to watch dvd's on my wii, but my finacee brought up a point, is the lens strong enough to with stand making it read dvds?
Of course it is. It plays your games right? The Wii game discs are standard DVDs that are encoded in Nintendo's own proprietary format, which is the reason your standard computer disc drive can't read them. There is much more stress being put on the laser (and the drive itself for that matter) while playing a game rather than playing a DVD. You'll be fine.
2. Well then just keep an eye out for it. If an update comes out do some research on it first before you update. Find out what what other people have experienced first. If you absolutely have to update and it does cause problems, just reformat your Wii before you update. Make sure to backup everything first though.
Ok I think I might try that but how do you back everything up, because somethings will not let you save it to the sd card, as in not all games. Is there any other way you can back it up?
1. You can't brick your wii with the Homebrew channel. There are some apps that can do that but they will warn you. Anyways those are things that the average person wouldn't use for their wii. Things like dvd-playing and cheat codes CANNOT brick your wii. It is literally impossible.
2. Nintendo has already showed that they won't do anything like that. What they WILL do is realease an update that deletes homebrew apps and the such, but it would never mess up anything alse.
They are not allowed to touch anything on the SD card without notification, or on wii, excluding TWILIGHT HACK!!! }:-( P.S. System 4.0 License. Agreement clearly states that it will delete "modified" savefiles, including the twilight hack
No it shouldn't matter. The Simpsons DVD that i was playing was a DL from 2008. If it can play that fine I shouldn't see any reason it can't play an older DVD but then again I'm not 100% sure. It is also possible it could be a compatibility issue on dvdlib's part despite it is an older DVD. Maybe you also want to check for scratches or something on your disc that could be causing the choppy playback.
I've got this softmod too. But for some reason dvd playback is a bit choppy. i couldn't tell from ur video, but did this happen to you? perhaps it was the dvd i was playing (dual layer from 2003)? i'm not sure. any ideas?
I have not had any issues thus far with this however I don't mess around with it that often because I have another DVD player I use anyways. If you were to ask me, I wouldn't think it would put the system through any more stress than playing a regular game would. Playing a DVD is a constant stream of information while playing a game is making the laser jump all around the disk loading textures and whatnot. If you don't feel safe running it though, don't. That's the best I can tell you.
did the twilight hack and installed the homebrew channel. through homebrew i installed mplayer first then dvdx and BAM, I got the Ironman movie playing. Now i don't have to spend the extra amount for a standalone dvd player.
My only gripe is that it takes a bit of time to load the dvd, mine loaded after about 20-30 seconds.
The quality is excellent for the first release of this program. I don't notice any drop in frame rate or quality at all. The only thing is that the current MPlayer release does not support menu's although it probably will soon. It's pretty incredible if you ask me. I mean, think how simple it would have been for Nintendo to release something like this and yet they didn't. Complete bull really.
Remember The XBox DVD 'playback kit'? Yep, same licensing thing :(
Thanks for the video, though. I'm looking into all this Wii homebrew after getting rid of my XBox last week. So far it's the natural successor to the XBox for homebrew, so I'm looking forward to what they'll be able to do now, especially after the DVD libraries being released...
This is available for IOS 4.3 now, right? I see some really cheap Wii's on Kijiji right now, I might pick one up mostly for homebrew stuff.

The ONLY way to unlock your Wii to play copied and backup games, import games, DVD's, and homebrew WITHOUT a mod chip is to use:
nintendo-wii-homebrew-unlock-hack.blogspot(DOT)com
This Wii unlock and homebrew installer works on ALL Wii's, including 4.2, and you cna copy discs using any PC or Mac!! Does NOT need Zelda!
