Squeel=maybe loose belt, ...run on and hard starting =timing, backfire maybe bad gas ..sticking accelerator pump check valve.or maybe metering rods ..cant tell what kind of carb it is from here ...Autolite?
its your timing dude... fords are the worst when it comes to setting the timing if its just alil off they run like shit.. and they dont like to shut off if you can manage to get them runinng. i own too many fords
That's a major timing issue. Have you removed your heads and screwed with the valve train at all? I would re-adjust the valves and re-time first, that way you are not out any money except for a pair of valve cover gaskets. I had that same problem with my 460, I put in a new timing chain, re-adjusted the valves, re-adjusted the carb and went from running okay to running like a top! 8mpg to 13mpg. I can light up a set of 35's now! Check out my videos on timing your BB Ford.
I had a 1977 Mercury Cougar with a 351 Cleveland that did the samething. I checked my timing with the timing light and it was way off. Then I adjusted my idle mixture screws. Soon I saved enough money I had my heads reworked. The machinist said my intake valve was gum up real bad and some had to be replace. Now it runs great.
I agree with some of your other comments , Timing is probably out. Which could have been caused by several things. (But that's just my opinion ) Backfire through the carb. can be caused by a valve not closing at the proper time and letting a small amount of combustion fire flow in reverse and come back out the carb. rather than going out the exhaust. So yea, I think it's a timing issue. Hope that helps you !
Maybe the advance curve is off so try lighter or heaver springs in the distributor and play with your curve to find what works best. It cant be to far out of time because it seems to turn over with little trouble but it also seems very slow to respond when you hit the gas.
A carburetor problem would cause this as well but before i would wast my time on that one i would get a Holley and be done with it!. Carters and Edelbrocks are a pain in the ass to set up and the parts ain't cheap!
you know what, my brothers 70 maverick had the same problem. we drove it home in the rain and the belt was loose. we thought that was the problem when the owner said the belt was loose. we tightened the belt up, fuck it was the dam water pump. we replaced it and it's perfectly fine now. dude replace the water pump, it has to be the pump.
Theres three things I could assume could have happend if you continue to have problems. 1) It might be your auxilaires the primary's are your drving ones but when the auxliries kick in it could be worn out, I'd check those out first. Then second, I would check your car if it's grounded and the wiring is jumping or the car "is skipping the gap". Finally I would check the spark plug gap, and then let a mechanic check it out if further issues occur.
yeah it is most likely a plug wire is grounding out.... but i had a holley on my 390 and it did the same thing i found outthe floats where jacked up and was dumping to much gas in, i put a edelbrock 750 on it and never had another problem.... if it is shooting flames out the carb that is the first thing i would check... this could throw your timing off as well concidering how bad its doing it i would suggest not driving it orr you could have real bad issues later on....
yeh might be the problem sounds like your leads a earthing out for some reason, maybe change your leads and see how goes but if still happens have timing checked
yeah, grounded leads can make a cyninder completely miss the ignition cycle. is the squeak the new noise that the motor is making? if that's the case, i would check some belts.
timing issue 4 sure

first off...tighten those dam belts on it ..and it might be the accelorator pump in the carb ...not a big deal

Well, the fuel mix is way too rich, the chaines are too loose and probably some other minor issues...

Timing of cam, timing chain jumped. Either that or massive vacuum leak.
