Love this album....an absolute obscure treasure!!....I found a CD of it years ago, but it didn't have this song on it, which was on the vinyl release that my brother used to have. So glad to have found it here. Thanks so much for posting!
I bought this album because I am in love with this Becker/Fagen song! I have never heard such wonderful jazz chords in a country/rock song before. Kay does a great job interpreting this SD song too!
My favorite song from this LP (which I have a couple of somewhere) was his rendition of "You Win Again". Have not been able to download it even from Limewire.
"My Sportin' Life" is a great album! My brother used to have the vinyl album and this was one of my favorite tracks. I was lucky enough to find a CD of it just a few years ago but strange and to my disappointment, this song wasn't on the CD. Thanks for posting so I can enjoy it again!
@hunkylynch I walked many a mile while hitch hiking back and forth between my parents place to Tech school back with that tune running and rerunning in my head back shortly after it was first released.
hunkylynch thank you for the upload I lived with this album in the 70's, nothing short of magnifique! I really dug this and his version of "Drift Away" and Ron Davies' "Sing With The Children" is to absoByGodlutely DIE FOR!! Long live John Kay! This puppy is being added to my list of Favorites, and now, I'll beg your pardon as I make my way to my all time John Kay fave, from "Forgotten Songs....." namely "Somebody", which is so damofino FINE! Thanks to: YOU TUBE, and: ROCK ON SHINDIGGERS!!!!
Don't forget "Nobody Lives Here Anymore", "Heros & Devils", & the title track! Come to think of it, there isn't one clinker tune on the MY SPORTIN' LIFE album.
YES....This song was written by Walter Becker & Donald Fagen of Steely Dan. They were originally signed to ABC/Dunhill records as staff songwriters before they broke big with Steely Dan. John Kay told me Becker & Fagen never recorded this song for release themselves, but it was a tune he really liked and he recorded it.
I bought this album when it first hit the streets in the 70s. Unfortunately, not many borderline country-pop songs charted at the time. Plus, he should have re-written the lyrics to change the name "Giles"; it's a silly name. Reminds me of my eighth-grade algebra teacher who lived with his mother. We tried to make a prank call to him once, but his mother answered the phone and said, "Giles can't come to the phone right now -- he's digesting." A better song on this album is Heroes and Devils.
He is so versatile. Here a cross over country type of song. Good song and another excellent performance by a rock and roll legend. The father of heavy metal, a Blues man, concept album rocker, John Kay's catalog crosses over just about every genre of contemporary music.

If I remember this song was written by Becker and Fagan (of Steely Dan fame). I found that interesting even back in the day.
