They thought it would increase the appeal of the church....sadly all it did was give people music to bash each others faces in to. maybe this isn't important to you, but good songs are written metaphorically so that they appeal to the most people(because it has a different meaning to each person), but when you go up to somebody, or post on youtube-"hey, they are a Christian band, or a Jewish band", or just point out that they are a religiously driven band, it takes away the meaning of the song for a lot of people.
