I came on here a) to post that it's 2/1/12, and b) to listen to kick-ass music. And sense everyone has talked about 2/1/12 today, I'm gonna turn it up to 11 and let go!
The transition at 5:02 is simply amazing, thats what rush do so well, they get two things barely anything alike and get an awesome transition (especially seen in Spirit of the Radio) which they have already established in the song (i.e The Japansese thing in Passage To Bangkok) and make it fit perfectly.
i love the song but has a riff in Temples of syrinx that goes 3:35 to 3:55 it looks a bit like the riff that takes Babe I'm Gonna Leave You that goes 5:36 to 5:55
compare and tell me if you like it or not.:
sorry my english, i'm brazilian and it's the google translator that's helping me.
@junintrip There is a similarity, alright. They could very well have have lifted it from Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page most likely), who in turn very well could have lifted it from some old Memphis bluesman...who in turn was most likely influenced by African music, and white folk music of the south, which in turn was heavily influenced by traditional Irish music. To hazard a guess, I'd say the riff is probably based on some Irish percussion (bodran) rhythm, but then again, I'm biased. ;)

my first concert in chicago 77 or78 loved it still the best ive ever seen those drums those guitars and gettys voice are so perfect i warped my album back then
Is it just me or was this Rush's pinnacle...ok music afterwards..but I think this was their truly best...and I don't like heavy metal...this had thought in the music and lyrics...something totally gone in music today.
Oh yes I heard this song for the first time from my brothers 8-track tape..lol...how old I am...but this was aweseome. Perfect blend of drums, bass and guitar....lyrics were....umm interesting. (Talked really about communism not sure if it disliked it or agreed with it) You are smart folks...you figure it out.
@Tralman1965 That's right. She and he wrote in similar styling. About the elimination of individualism, and the conductors of economic tyranny being provoked by a common individual. Both are great reads, and thank you for the correction, Mr. Tralman
Have to disagree my friend - it is a great album but it can be played too loud as evidenced by several pairs of speakers that I have blown over the years .....
@djstrano1 Wow - way to miss the point of the song.....stand up to collectivism, and beware of any government that tells you they can provide everything for you....THEN kick some butt!

@Kieran1996Hughes its about an alternate future about where the world is basically controlled by the Priests of Syrinx and they control all aspects of life (music, literature, art etc) and its about a man who finds a guitar and plays it pretty much. The moral is the prevailing of the artistic mind over oppression.
I didn't actually hear this song until the "Spirit of Radio" Greatest Hits CD came out, and I regret not getting the 2112 LP when it came out in '76'.

@chitoryu12 LMAO... No, what I was talking about was way back when, I would put on this album (vynle record) blaze up a fatty, and, plug my headphones into my stero. But, there would be some wierd food after the buzz wore off, the munchies wo9ujld kick in...
@rsapienza1965 I remember my older brother buying this tape in the the early 80's when I was about 15 and he was 20, and we cruised and toked listening to it in his tricked out 80's Ford truck. Its still a damn good record
@rsapienza1965 Ah yes. I would put on my old Koss headphones, plug it into my Marantz stereo, sit back with a doob in hand, cold a/c blowing, blacklight poster of Jimi Hendrix on the wall........get the mood? I would drop the needle on 2112 or Zeppelin II or Deep Purple In Rock or Paranoid and just "sink" into the music. All you kids out there, you don't know what you're missing with your I Pods, digital music and streaming videos. It used to be an "experience" for alot of us older guys!
