One Big Boy Steam locomotive can pull a five mile long freight train all by itself. The Big Boy was not the most powerful steam locomotive. The Pennsylvania Railroad 4-4-6-4 produced 1,787 more horsepower more than the Big Boy. This version of this message contains a grammar correction.
Just awsome to Chinese 2-8-2 Mikado's QJ/JS class engines hauling a long US freight train, thats awsome and with no help, who arranged for those engines to haul the train and what railroad were they on?
yup !! its 1 of my fav. I think 1 bigboy shout be-able to pull this train alone.
21-07-59 the run of a bigboy and soon it will be 2009, 21-07-09 would be a nice date for a bigboy to return to the just ones or twice, to make run like this train. i will come personly from holand to come and see !!!!
If you go the website for RDC the company that owns these engines, just google search for railroad development corporation,on the news page is an article announcing that RDC is bringing another QJ class 2-10-2 number 7040 to the United States.7040 is being leased to RJ Corman Railroads and will be operaing on its Kentucky lines.
It's taken someone three months to answer that question. Not including the tenders, if you divide up the spans of the adjoining truck-trailer progression, the count is eighty-three.
I know of a run that the union pacific big boy took back in the 1950's, it was a double header not sure of how many cars however the train was about 7 miles long
Maybe that would hold up against dispute, but that's an unbelievable span of freight! With a freight car's average length of 50ft, I figured that out to be more than 450 cars, almost 460! I heard it said on television when the Franklin Mint released the Big Boy replica some years back that a single one "could pull a train four miles long." You said "double header", indicative of an eight-mile train. Seven miles to that much ultimate power wouldn't push it to capacity.

In Woroshilovgrad (Lugansk now), Ukraina
was built light 2-10-2 based on L
with larger boiler nor 18,5 tons per axle.
It names LW.
Some years later in 1956
Soviet leaders ordered dieselisation on railways
all industrial equipement for engine making was given to China.
because "Russian and Chinese is brothers forewer" soviet policy.
L carriage and steam engine was rebuilt for 1435 gauge. And with new larger boiler (old sovied FD type) it become QJ.
ps Excuse me for my English :)

in 1945 year...
in Kolomna town near of Moscow, Russia...
was built light 2-10-0 type
18,5 tons per axle...
for bad rails. war conseqence.
year later it was renamed to honour of its construktor to L-type (Lebedyanskiy)
Because it was very nice engine and Lebedyanskiy was very good constructor.
It's only one case in Soviet Union when engine named in honour of his constructor.

Maybe fuel them with low-grade biodiesel and have an electrostaitc percipitator to filter out smoke particles... clean sustainable steam.

They burn coal... Good luck converting them to oil.
SeniorMinch229018 3 years ago
Now, if these engines could get there full power at the start, and we could run them on something clean, could we possibly bring steam back? Huh!?

Gotta love those QJs. It's so cool to see steam on revenue freight again.

In England the haulage record stands at 2158 English tons by No92203 a 9F 2-10-0.
That was only for a third of a mile from a standing start. The loco's fire was 3ft deep & white hot all the way through.
#92203 is a much smaller locomotive than these.

The chinese dragons are the youngest mainline steam locomotives to operate in the United states. Hope to see more of them.

It just goes to show how powerful steam locos can be, in england, it ould have taken 4 or 5 diesels to haul that train.
