It's *Simulated*. Aka not a real earthquake. It would have replicated the factors of a common earthquake that could be survived with some quick thinking. Otherwise he would have just had to sit around on a fault like for possibly years waiting for an earthquake that bad. Some of the episodes ARE real, with real danger, but majority of them are simulated, so the things he does could work, but there is no danger to him/other actors like in the snakebite one.
