I had no idea he sang this kind of rep. He sounds gorgeous, singing the aria in his own voice rather than trying to sound all big and dramatico. Makes it sweeter and sensitive. yay
Not for nothing did Pavarotti call FW the greatest tenor in history. Wunderlich beautifully mastered not only tthe Italian repertoire (sometimes in Italian), but covered the entire range from early music, e.g. Monteverdi (in Italian!), via Bach (he was the ultimate Evangelist) to German Lieder to contemporary opera and popular Viennese and other songs. And he excelled in every field. Totally astounding, and surely unsurpassed. I've never yet heard a mediocre recording in all his vast output.
Did he never sing in Italian ? On the other hand, with such a voice he could afford to sing even in German. Sorry I don't mean to offend anyone, it's just that it is my favorite air and I am obviously used to hear it in the original version.
As far as I know, you can also find some italian songs sung by him on youtube. Tosca is my favourite opera and I really like it in German... ^^ Of course, it is a difference to the italian original, but in my opinion, the transcription is well done. Now add Wunderlich's voice and you get a wonderful aria! ^^

Quel immense musicien.

Ineffable! Truly and honestly sung! For once this aria is all too brief -- every Puccini tenor should hear this performance to keep himself honest!

Wunderlich is fantastic, but I just can't appreciate translated opera. Neither Tosca in German, nor Zauberflote and Carmen in Italian.
My two cents.

Wonderful interpetation of this aria! Unusual to hear it in German but only in the very beginning. Very, very beautiful and expressive!
