This is the best performance I have ever heard of this Haydn quartet. The performers approached it in a way I believe Haydn's music should - they make a point of bringing out the quirky aspects of his music such as the pianoforte accents, and the phrase endings are sublime. The tone of the instruments match the character of the piece too. I'm learning this in my school quartet at the moment coached by the second violin of the Allegri Quartet and he says that this recording is the best around.
I must know this: who created that lovely picture? I do enjoy the music, and do not feel offended, but the creator of that picture is far more interesting. Please tell me, I actually saw it quite a while ago and have been searching for it hitherto. And now that i've found it, there is no name!
To all the people debating which composers is better thna the others, I have to remind you that the beauty of music is that each composer is unique, as is his music. Dvorak's Symphony no. 9, Brahms' Symphony no. 3, Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique," and Copland's "Appalachian Spring" are all pretty different, but I love each of these pieces dearly. Every person will have different pieces and different composers that speak to them.

In his first compositional period, Beethoven kept his pieces in the 4-movement form for symphonies. However, he expanded and modified much more than Haydn could ever have imagined. Beethoven did many controversial things and he completely changed the symphony as people knew it at the time. This is why Haydn is considered a classical composer and Beethoven is considered to be not only a classical composer but a romantic one as well. His pieces were decades ahead of his time.
Haydn was beethoven's teacher therefore haydn is better than beethoven :S Then what of Einstein's teachers? Are you saying their minds were superior to his? Einstein's teachers were smarter than him, that's exactly why they are famous and noone knows who einstein is. Hmm.
I don't think Haydn is better than Beethoven. I think they are on equal plains, and I usually don't like comparing composers because why can't we enjoy both of there music? an opinion can not be right. It may be invalid but it can't be wrong. Mine is slightly invalid but not to invalid :D
:O COMPARE HAYDN TO BEETHOVEN? Are you crazy? Haydn may have been the father of the symphony but what he did was nothing compared to what beethoven did. There's a reason haydn wrote over 100 symphonies and beethoven had 9. Beethoven's symphonies were much longer and more complex (his 9th was 65 minutes) Also haydn stayed with the 4-movement form while beethoven did many things that were revolutionary and different. SATB chorus, timpani as solo instrument, Scherzo replacing minuet, etc.
Gosh, both arrogant and ignorant. Haydn modified his form repeatedly - moving the position of movements, cutting movements etc.
Naturally this formal experimentation was limited - he was contracted to produce a lot of music, and he'd practically invented the form, so he was naturally happy to experiment rhythmically, dynamically and contrapuntally more than with the framework of his creation. But to say he did not experiment with it is absurd.
On other notes - your view of musical history is heavily jaundiced by early-20th century revisionist theory; tainted by hero-worship and the fame factor. Your betray this by your childish notion of the 'Romantic', an undefinable term which is wholly nostalgic and largely irrelevant, depending on death dates more than on music.
When it comes to defining Romanticism in grounds of individuality, self-actualisation etc., I put it to you, as Robin Holloway (top musicologist at Cambridge) would, that Haydn is perhaps the most Romantic of all. Certainly his music is the most formally and harmonically unique (free from outside influence) in the entire Western canon - more so than Bach, more so than Mozart, Mahler, Stravinsky any of the orchestral composers you care to name. Berlioz is about as close as you'll get.
Beethoven, by contrast, is heavily derivative of Haydn and Mozart - Wagner confesses and accepts that his work owes an equal debt, as did Mendelssohn, Schubert and others. Where Haydn's experimentation continually carves out new ground in contrapuntal forms, harmony, instrumentation etc. ad infinitum, Beethoven's experimentation is widely acknowledged to sit largely in the realm of rhythm and passing, unimaginative but VERY LOUD fantasies that rarely cast their mind far beyond his own salon.
Haydn, as our most unique composer, is deeply ambiguous in his interpretation - almost unapproachable. You would be a fool to dismiss him so glibly, and to make pathetic value judgements upon his work. You would do far better to accept the inapproachability of Haydn as a tantalising frustration, and enjoy the unparalleled variety and beauty of his works.
I have not dismissed Haydn. You are taking this as an excuse to post random information. If you had cared to read, you would have learned that I was denying what was stated by morvensky: that Haydn was better than Beethoven. Of course Haydn is famous for a reason. However, to say that he is better than Beethoven would be going too far as both made great contributions to music.
It's been 8 months since this discussion ended. Do you have nothing better to do than to get involved in debates that you have no place in? Please do not rekindle a fire that has already burnt itself out, it is pointless and a waste of time.
Kid, that's because Beethoven isn't famous for his quartets :P He's famous for his symphonies. You are free to keep your opinion but it is very obviously a misinformed one. I can see how ignorant you are in music right here.
Last time I checked his late string quartets were quite famous. You can see that you think I am ignorant because I will argue Haydn is as good as Beethoven? I will not call your ignorant because I have barely talked to you and I am not as arrogant as to call someone ignorant because of there opinion, eccentric or not.
Not ignorant because of *their* (you used the wrong "their") opinion but ignorant based on what they know. When you have an opinion that is very obviously misinformed, that is called being ignorant.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I corrected you only where I felt it was absolutely necessary. I ignored the smaller errors. Trying to look smart? I understand Beethoven, that makes me smart which means I'm not simply "trying to look smart". If your opinion was well-informed I would not have called you ignorant. You WERE talking to yourself; check up on your first post. That was a waste of time. I might seem like a pseudo-intellectual to you.
If you were as smart as you think, you would not think that everyone who may like Haydn better than Beethoven is ignorant, and you would have not misinterpreted the first comment thinking I said Haydn was better than Beethoven. I was not talking to myself because if I was I would have responded to my first post. I can't believe a 14 year old is already so arrogant, I don't feel like a dick actually since you started the argument. You still have not explained why my comment was stupid. [cont.]
Anyway, I think it would be better for everyone if we just ended the argument. Please don't say "its because you know I am right" even though it is because we are just arguing over intangible opinions, and I think we are annoying everyone else :P
Pseudo-intellectual? I might seem that way because I'm only 14. Feel like a dick now huh? Arguing with a teenager :P Get a life. I'm only annoying to those who choose to make stupid comments. I don't see anyone else complaining about me.
I was only saying think this is better than any of hte Beethoven string quartets and I had even elaborated that I prefer Haydn over Beethoven, my preference has nothing to do with quality. You have to learn to realize people have different opinions than you.
"Last time I checked his late string quartets were quite famous." Not nearly as famous as his symphonies. The Ode to Joy from his 9th was played at the fall of the berlin wall and not one of his string quartets.
Woahhh, seems ive caused a bit of a problem. i think i may have given off the wrong impression. i wish to stress the 'in parts' section (in my last comment) as i am only referring to parts which have, in my opinion, been more sufficiently expressed in alternative recordings (In my opinion!!!) I do think, for the record, that parts of this performance are simply exquisite but thought that youtube was a place where i could offer an opinion! Apologies!
ime not being funny pal but that is such an ignorant comment. im not amazing by a long shot but i am a developing musician with a passion for exapanding my knowledge of repetoire and theory/analysis especially in classical music where it is lacking. i am particularly attached to this peice after studying it for part of my a level (therefore analysing each bar in detail etc) and feel that my points are valid. im entitled to my opinion mate and it certainly doesnt reflect a standard of musicalit
I feel conflicted about this performance. On one hand, this performance is beautifully dynamic and energetic.Nothing stale about this approach. But their timing is of the modern musicolgical politically correct kind. It is not witty and it never surprises. They do not play with expectation at all, which is exceedingly important in such a witty rhetoric as this. Furthermore doing so is a hallmark of traditional Viennese style. Last, their ensemble tone and balance is thrillingly luminescent.
Yes! Down with the bland modern interpretations! Composers and musicians are meant to be artists in each their way. That said, I don't want to be overly critical of this particular interpretation... everybody is like that nowadays...
Can i just say, that is the most pretentious thing i have ever heard anyone say? I think this performance is wonderful and have been using it as a piece to learn from in my music A2 exam.
Yes but I'm pretty sure it took me less time to write what I wrote than it took you to come up with that ridiculous paragraph. Also, I am discussing with others whereas you are just talking to yourself.
@ClassicalMusicReview By the sounds of it you could fit an entire symphony orchestra, let alone string quartet, up your rectal opening. If you did, and it were "thrillingly luminescent", you could almost boast that you had the sun shining out of your arse! Not that you are for a moment given to pomposity, I'm sure.

@ClassicalMusicReview Go away and listen to serialism if you want more exciting timing. We're all happy here listeneing to this apparently 'inferior' group of musicians playing this piece.

Anyway, I think it would be better for everyone if we just ended the argument. Please don't say "its because you know I am right" even though it is because we are just arguing over intangible opinions, and I think we are annoying everyone else :P
morvensky 2 years ago
Pseudo-intellectual? I might seem that way because I'm only 14. Feel like a dick now huh? Arguing with a teenager :P Get a life. I'm only annoying to those who choose to make stupid comments. I don't see anyone else complaining about me.
RedhairedSpirit 2 years ago
I was only saying think this is better than any of hte Beethoven string quartets and I had even elaborated that I prefer Haydn over Beethoven, my preference has nothing to do with quality. You have to learn to realize people have different opinions than you.
morvensky 2 years ago
@RedhairedSpirit if you understand beethoven and you are interested in it, that's great ;)
you may be smart too . i guess you are

Apologies!

this piece is amazing but the performance is pretty lifeless in parts. 9:29 is soooo weak. It needs to growl!!
DrummerDude91 3 years ago
are you not good at music or something?
rumpranger65 2 years ago
ime not being funny pal but that is such an ignorant comment. im not amazing by a long shot but i am a developing musician with a passion for exapanding my knowledge of repetoire and theory/analysis especially in classical music where it is lacking. i am particularly attached to this peice after studying it for part of my a level (therefore analysing each bar in detail etc) and feel that my points are valid. im entitled to my opinion mate and it certainly doesnt reflect a standard of musicalit

o dear classicalmusicreview just enjoy the music id like to see you do such impressive works like Haydn.
charlieere01 3 years ago
He wasn't talking about Haydn's music. He was talking about the performance. And you don't know that he even plays any instruments in the quartet.
I don't really care or agree with him, but the "well let's see you do better"type of comment irks me.

ahahahahahaha shut up i dont care about your views really i cant believe i even wasted my precious time reading it,

Good choice. Quator Mosaiques recordings are the most universally praised, and highest rated recordings of string quartets on period instruments.

Personally, I think the "pf" accents starting at 0:50, are very clever and surprising.
HARMONICO101 2 years ago
Hmm, you have nothing better to do with yoru time than write this? Seriously? Get a life, kid.
RedhairedSpirit 2 years ago
you have written more than me so far.
morvensky 2 years ago
Yes but I'm pretty sure it took me less time to write what I wrote than it took you to come up with that ridiculous paragraph. Also, I am discussing with others whereas you are just talking to yourself.
RedhairedSpirit 2 years ago
If I was talking to myself you would not be responding .

I agree 7:19 is the best bit of the movement :)

I love the feel it has at 7:19: It's like Arabic or something

That deceptive cadence near the end gives me chills every time!
Thanks for posting!
Slapazoid 3 years ago
at what time is the cadence? I'm currently studying this piece
dumpsterpaul 2 years ago
what do you mean? there are cadences everywhere...
oatboy 2 years ago
There's more than one! There's a cadence at the end of many of the phrases in this song. (IE: one at 6:20 , for instance.)
jpsousa4 2 years ago
It is not a song.
TheSnailSugar 2 years ago
Haydn's string quartets are not songs, just like cakes are not pastries.
jpsousa4 2 years ago
Thanks for correcting yourself. You are a true class act.
TheSnailSugar 2 years ago
Have you never baked a cake before, or should I link you right now to Wikipedia's definition of "pastry," hm?

I did my best to give you an out. Sorry to see that you have now made a complete fool of yourself.

Did Hadyn get his chops from Mozart or did Mozart get his chops from Haydn?
Markohoppis 3 years ago
Mozart got his chops from Haydn.
HARMONICO101 3 years ago 4
Liebanus 1 year ago
@Markohoppis Mozart himself Haydn taught him how to write string quartets, although he was never a pupil of Haydn.
