  • with all do respect to rippetoe... what on earth?!?! why is he watching this guy round out his back each time, and saying nothing???

  • Rip is teaching it fine... seems like it's the guy who's doing it's first time, which may account for the rounded back.

  • why head down? body follows head no?

  • @angryman1007 that's exactly what's wrong with facing up. you want hip drive -- not premature head raising where you lose a static back angle.

  • You fucking fagots talkin shit about Rip have no fucking clue what the hell you are talking about. Stupid fucks!

  • @Urphucked no need to get mad

  • overhead squat is really HARD! :(

  • still goes through me when i watch this video! see my previous comment to why! ive been training a verry long time takes a long time to get ready to do this properly and this guy is no where near being able to atempt it! silly rippetoe tut tut

  • Thanks for sharing this video. I understand what an overhead squat is.

  • whats the point of oh squats???accessory or main lift

  • @ManagFTW66

I think it would depend on what you're trying to achieve. A regular squat is a main lift, OH might be considered an assistance lift

  • @ManagFTW66 When I do OH squats they are treated as a main lift. They are hard as hell and deserve more respect than curls and other accessory lifts. It is one of the few lifts where you work literally almost every muscle in your body.

  • What benefits does this have over a regular squat?

  • @Reapers261 i think this squat would be used for the snatch in weight lifting ,thats what it looks like to me anyway and this guy is very much a power lifter ,weight lifting guy as far as i know .

  • @Reapers261

Looks harder to me. It would probably work your biceps more too.

  • Holy butt wink batman!

  • karwowski did his lifts in the same way. if you think that rip or captain kirk karwowski are "terrible" in what they're doing , you should fucking kill yourself.

  • Good work Rip! New litters need to stretch out before they can perform the lifts proper. Week 4 of SS and I've added over 75 lb to my squat! Thanks man

  • This is terrible.

  • @mrceebees14 Can you elaborate? I'm one week into overhead squatting so need the clarification to why I should or shouldn't pay attention.

  • @Wiegieboard Crossfit?

  • @mrceebees14 Powerlifter using assistance exercises.

  • it is NOT only lifting weights, there is a right way to do it and a wrong way and if you do the wrong way you will get hurt. You have to accept and recognise the science behind the lift or you won't get the dynamics of it all, and at the same time you have to combine the science with your own spin to create a program that works for you. If you aren't a professional in this field, you really have no right to speak on it. Having experience lifting is one thing but knowing the science is another

  • I love rippetoe, he's pretty hot

  • Jesus christ EVERYONES a fucking critic! What the fuck is wrong with you people. To those who insist on correcting a man like Rippetoe on his squat training. You need to pull your fucking heads out of your asses and realize, this guy has forgotten more than you'll probably EVER know about the lifts. I guess theres internet tough guys so theres got to be internet geniuses.

  • Pfft! Can't wait for this guy to load on this overhead squat! Dislocated shoulders here we come! In my opinion poor teaching for this! Most people struggle with this exercise because of tightness of the body mainly in the lumbar area and also the soleus( muscle under the gastrocs ) address these issues before putting the shoulders in that position!!!

  • @DonHumbostoni i had to do alot of stretching before i was ever able to squat properly. personally i think rippetoe makes too big of a science out of all this. he knows his stuff, but lifting doesnt need to be rocket science. dont sweat the small stuff they say, in the end its only lifting weights

  • @tillymaster44 It needs to be a science if you want the best results without hurting yourself in the long run. "Just doing it" will get you hurt, or slow your results.

  • @pr0fet i disagree. look at the old school powerlifters before they were wrapped head to toe in gear and 6ft wide stances. the weights they put up any lifter nowadays would struggle to compete with and their form was not anywhere near what rips teaching. all the little nuances and intricacies in the end do not make much of a difference imo

  • @DonHumbostoni I really don't see how this is in any way bad for your shoulders.....maybe if you lack the flexibility you should just stay ignorant. In case you didn't know though, the point of getting the shoulders that far back is so the bar stays in line with your center of gravity and you don't fall forward. kthx

  • @DonHumbostoni also the majority of people have tight pecs and lats, which internally rotates the humerus', your completely right, address the tight muscles before even attempting to teach an overhead squat

  • Great instruction.. I like how specific and on-point he is with the finer elements. Super useful. Thanks!

  • rips belly is unreal he needs to pratice what he preaches

  • @westwood187 He use to be a world record powerlifter. Having that "belly" is actually beneficial in that sport.

  • @LordEly69 the words ''used to'' clearly indicated he longer needs that belly.

  • I love how many people try to correct Rippetoe. Maybe when they're done here they can give Peyton Manning some pointers, or teach Cliff Lee how to throw a baseball.

  • Bad low back flexion,he should be squatting down, not back!!

  • stance is too wide

  • @olylifter69kg

Rip does not teach olympic style squats.

  • @chiconspiracy he is teaching a squat used by olympic weightlifters all the time, wait a minute, so your saying there is a POWERLIFTING STYLED overhead squat? gimme a break

  • rip is not bill starr

  • i was told you have to keep your feet straight

  • @evilmonkey1192 you were told wrong.

  • @evilmonkey1192 I tend to keep mine as straight as I can. It almost feels lazy to point toes out hard. Feels like a much less athletic movement. I use hip drive like this though.

  • @Askren If you like to keep your knees, point your toes and knees out.

  • @DWarrior666 My knees are fine, I'll adjust if need be later. And you see plenty of Oly lifters who don't duck foot it.

  • Atrocious...

You will easily get a luxation of the shoulder joint.

  • just got one, he's book. awesome, will love one on one training

  • @xKillTheMachines

People that want to get stronger through compound movements involving the barbell.

  • quote slvice14 : This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

shut the fucking hell up about Rippetoe you fucking idiot

  • he has written six books, slvice14, you dumb fuck. you don't know what the fuck you're talking about

  • @slvice14 id like to see you work out

  • This helped me too, but that guy has HORRIBLE form and is rounding his back as if his life depended on it. He looks like a spinal injury waiting to happen...

  • This helped me

  • fucking 08u235086349h08gh3

  • do what u want with your free time, just admit rippetoe is god and we'll have done with it...

  • 'lick my ass'

    -snookie

  • Dang, hearing his voice and imagining some of his quotes is just hard. Gets a lot of cred for being a good coach, I try to mimic my squats just like him (or at least ass to grass because that just sounds awesome)

  • that's one way.

i love Mark Rippetoe, but he's not an Oly Coach.

  • true, I've been using his back squat form for about two weeks and liking it to work posterior chain and first pull positioning but I wouldn't use that same squatting style (sitting back) to do an overhead squat

  • thats a thick sonuvabitch! damn!

  • 肩が後ろに回らないんだよなぁ・・・

  • Good video, good instruction. Thanks.

  • Thanks for posting. Great Instruction.

  • @AidenBloodaxe I like how Crossfit is now running like chickens with their heads cut off to get some recognition since their type of training goes against a ton of basics. After 16 years of existence, they only have level 1 of their "credo" accredited and for good reason, the rest Glassman pulled out of his ass. Rippetoe I guess is a step in the right direction, crossfit should just admit that their style of training has been whack for years.

  • Rippetoe is one of the most respected coaches in the world, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

  • @soccer7989 He is?

  • lol, obvious troll is obvious.

  • @tjdahms Squat gear? hahahahahahha

  • Doing windows for winter, top frame of double-hung window slipped. Only way to get it to top: Lift both frames as 1, support top w/dowel & pull bottom back down. Frames: huge, heavy, old, warped, hard to move separately, impossible together. I squatted down & stiff-armed it up about 1/3, from top of frame, (fail 1st attempt, succeed 2nd),rested a minute, reset the squat & did last 2/3 from bottom of frame, (also 2nd attempt). Overhead Squat to rescue! (There will be no workout today.)

  • I don't understand why toeing out is allowed to such an extreme. Toeing out is a sign of poor hip mobility. The look down technique does not fly with me either. Teaching eyes down head down creates the environment for forward head posture. Didn't hear any talk about pelvic position either which is vital in the OH squat or squat. Maybe that is discussed later. Please advise.

  • Rip's bks detail pelvis, toe & head. My take:1/Eyes not down, but 8' or so forward on flr, for a neutral neck. This enhances strong hip raise & never caused me to have a forward head. 2/Toes out, assuming you're going deep w/knees out, as Rip demands, engages hamstrings & adductors & ensures that knees don't go too far over toes. A bit over is fine. 3/Lower and upper back should be lockd in extension throughout the lift.

  • If the looking down technique does not fly with you; you're either looking too far down or have dodgey anthropometrics. The toeing out keeps the foot in line with the knees which is anatomically safer. I wouldn't concern yourself with what rip did & didn't teach in this clip anyway,he knows exactly what he is doing & yes, refer to Lazur1s post.

  • Doesn't keeping the toes straight keep the foot in line with the knees?

OH squat and back squat are essentially the same. The best squatters and olympic lifters do not have their eyes down during training or competition.

Teaching eyes down to an the athlete has zero positive on- field/court carryover and will do nothing to correct forward head posture that many general fitness enthusiasts experience. Agree to disagree on this topic.

  • I just read "Starting Strength." I see Rippetoe's perspective. I also read some of his quotes. Hilarious.

  • Put down the NASC manual, its not doing you any favors.

  • meant nasm, directed at robby..

  • Yeah, whoops. Probably had to google that so you could sound smart. My professional sports career has done me plenty favors. Thanks.

  • It is to keep your spine in a neutral position and stop strain on your cervical spine from craning your neck upward.

As said before Rip is one of the most widely respected strength coaches around.

  • Much respect for the overhead squat. Listen to the kid at the end: He obviously is a strong guy, but his first set of proper OS's has taken the steam out of him a bit, with an empty bar.

  • butt wink, nothing offensive

  • is his lower back rounding at the bottom? it looks like its arches up until the bottom of the movement

  • looks rounded to me

  • To me too.
