there is a story beyond that ballade- that its about some misterios women that is coming up from some river and tells the story about the people of some kingdom that was killed defending their home and their souls turned into the flowers of the river
@Rachman1337 That's quite alright, I've been practising about 45 mins to an hour on a daily basis for over 6 months but no matter how much time and effort I invest in it, the end result is still absolute rubbish. Even my family knows it and none of them are particularly musical. There is definitely a reason that Chopin's Ballade no. 3 is on the LMUS examination list.
Are any of you aware why Krystian Zimerman refuses to come to the United States...?
Zimerman came to the U.S. for a concert soon after the terrorist attack on 9/11. The authorities at JFK airport confiscated his grand piano because they thought it smelled like explosives. They DESTROYED his Priceless Grand Piano...!!! Smashed it into bits..!! I couldn't believe this when I heard it. What kind of a stupid fool doesn't just take the covers off and look inside. Stupid, Stupid Americans. And I am 1
@christina69962 i agree that people have different tastes and there is nothing wrong with it, but i must say that classical music has special quality and most of music educated people understand its value...its quality never fades while other genres and artists rise and fall...lot of people can make modern song which will become famous, but to compose a piece like chopins u have to be a genius
@metalfactory50 This is a good summary. Too many people on here who play an instrument get all caught up on how a certain performance wasn't good enough, or they could do better, this and that, yada yada. Say what you want about whether or not you prefer the music, but fact is these compositions are on a level of genius that doesn't exist in todays music. Do you think brittany spears understands harmonic relationships, counterpoint, phrasing, etc.... like the composers of the past?
@metalfactory50 I agree. I am very fond of Chopin, I am also very fond of metal music. I enjoy music that takes talent; metal takes talent to play. Though metal and Chopin aren't even on the same level, it takes more skill than just pressing buttons on a computer to make a "beat" and singing about drugs and "getting ass." I see Classical influence in many metal bands, and they tend to be the best ones
I think Chopin would have been proud to hear Zimmerman play his pieces with the love in which he composed them! Zimmerman's depth is truly amazing. Out of everyone I see/hear, he seems to play like he composed every piece himself. A talent that is truly rare! Bravo Zimmerman, although, Bravo doesn't really adequately describe your playing!
I think this is a damn near perfect version of this song. I slaved over trying to find a better version at my record store today. Zimerman entirely understands this song.
This is so good that it quite literally makes me sick to my stomach... especially those C sharp minor sections. Dear god, I love it... but it aches so!
@kroooassant This is absolute music, giving it a title other than opus number/key signature would be wrong, especially if the composer didn't want to attach any specific event/picture with the piece. Hence why we have so many wonderful interpretations of the same music. :)
@kroooassant You'll find that the more notable "impossible to remember" pieces are given a programmatic title other than their usual uniform title. Besides this it is much easier having Opus numbers and piece numbers rather unfathomable individual titles.
This is the best performance of this piece I have everr heard, however, he tends to rush in a few places where playing a little slower would bring more expression to the piece (just my opinion).
5:26-5:39 it is so amazing and wonderful . It does chills me out , how he moves his hand so fast and lively , playing all the chords and octaves like that . Chopin would be proud of this man :)
Note how "UTube oriented" his behavior is here, and yet this video dates apparently from ca. 1980. Talk about prescience, clairvoyance etc., this guy knows all about marketing himself, right?...If, after hearing one of these typical Zimerman chopstick jobs, your reaction is somehing like, I no longer have any idea what Chopin is supposed to be all about, well, you can go, and bounce all over the Tube to find your Chopin all over again...all this courtesy of Mr.Zimerman...
@MUEREACOSTA Actually, he came back. He played in California back in '09 and THEN said he wouldn't come back because of some U.S. operation in Poland.
@playnath I sometimes get that way with Shostakovich. Then again, when listening to Shostakovich, I suppose the intense emotions that I'm overwhelmed with are different than the ones you experience while listening to this.
...Or could they be the same? Music is mysterious in a psychological perspective.
Well, I guess I've heard a dozen interpretations of this wonderful work, and this one is really growing on me. The sonic quality of the recording helps a lot, too. But Zimerman's Chopin is just beautiful.
For anyone who appreciates a breath taking individules performance i suggest you watch John Butler play Ocean. He is a little strange and not of the same genre but highly talented none the less.
The ending to this piece is extremely fun to play. Its the only Ballad to end in a major key and its a very liberating experience, especially since it comes right after an extremely tumultuous and IMO, constipating section.
@mlleroxanev people are blind and deaf to actually hear real music... Rihanna is just an "artist" who attracts young people who like hip hop, rap, etc... but IMHO, not a rap hater or anything... however I truly believe that classic music was meant for EDUCATED people... and Zimmerman was, is, will be... educated lol...
@Damgoodballers8 anyone can listen to and enjoy classical music if they want to. everyone has their own opinions on music :P there's no "right or wrong" tastes.
Several years ago, I had the opportunity to learn this beautiful piece of music at 16 after being inspired by a more seasoned pianist friend who played it. There was something uplifting about simply hearing it, but playing it...my goodness, I could not imagine a more heavenly experience. Other Chopin pieces are exquisite, but this Polish love letter to the piano is just divine.
@omguanyin There are, think of the film scores, it's just that we are not so appreciative anymore because we have so much more in life. And these guys like chopin n list were fuckin AMAZING so we were lucky

So far the BEST performance of this piece. His interpretation of Chopin's Ballade No.3, so strong technically and it is an excellent performance indeed! Love it.
I just heard Hamelin's version of Ballad 3. It's very good. One could argue it's even better that Zimerman's. I have one critique though. Hamelin used way to much rubato in Ballad 3 whereas Zimerman doesn't. Also in general I still think Zimerman is the best pianist I know.
@93rardo Having the very same debate at this very moment. I think Hamelin really, REALLY nails the climaxes at a level that in my mind is unmatched by any living pianist, but overall I think Zimerman has a better touch and a better overall quality than Hamelin. Another thing that I'd like to point out is that Zimerman doesn't make a single note mistake in this, while Hamelin (who has divine technique that certainly outstrips 99% of the best concert pianists out there) makes several!
Yes, it is amazing that Zimerman makes no mistakes. In an interview Zimerman said that he doesn't mind mistakes and that a great pianist (he mentions Cortot) can make a number of mistakes and still be a great pianist. It's unimportant. He doesn't strive for a faultless performance at all and ironically I think that is the very reason why he doesn't make mistakes. It all flows so naturally.
