@thisismymoniker If you take the 'radicals' at face value, their main goal is not to 'islamacize' the West, but to have them call off the dogs. Muslim countries not being invaded by US armies are run by US supported dictator thugs. Where the radicals went wrong was believing that violence is the solution instead of having patience and trusting in God and trying to clean up their own societies. They also figured that the ends justified the means, and they don't. All sides need to realize this.

The religious Imams and scholars, though often politically involved, were independent of and often at odds with the actual rulers, some of whom were corrupt at times, without doubt. Sharia on the other hand is not to be confused with government. Sharia is a whole system whose aim is for the benefit of human well-being.
But sh'aria is in strict accordance with qu'ran, sunnah, ijma. Almost by definition this can become retrograde and arbitrary. A chance instruction preserved in a haddith can carry undue weight over human wisdom, reasoning or compassion.
The imitation of 7th century punishments is particularly strange. The qu'ran also seems to advocate a higher standard of compassion than evidenced in haddiths e.g. qu'ran says "no compulsion in religion" - as opposed to "kill the apostates!".

Let me make the following point: sharia applies only in areas where Muslims govern and where Muslims live (by and large). History shows that prior Muslims often even allowed minorities to be governed by their own religious laws. And the apostasy and blasphemy laws as you think of them are debatable.
Consensus on apostasy & blasphemy have tended towards harsh interpretations, in style of the now clearly evil heresy trials / witch trials of middle ages in Europe. It should be perfectly clear that there is a connection between disincentivising questioning the judgements of law-makers, and very inflexible countries prone to dictatorships! Saudi Arabia - domestic abuse believed to be widespread. These statistics are higher than in Western countries.

@wolfatnight The Prophet married older women, too, even many years older. 14 centuries ago in Arabia, marrying a young girl (and consummating the marriage AFTER puberty) was not unusual. She lived with him when she was 9, by most accounts, but some say she was 14.

Muslim countries not being invaded by US armies are run by US supported dictator thugs. Where the radicals went wrong was believing that violence is the solution instead of having patience and trusting in God and trying to clean up their own societies. They also figured that the ends justified the means, and they don't. All sides need to realize this.

The religious Imams and scholars, though often politically involved, were independent of and often at odds with the actual rulers, some of whom were corrupt at times, without doubt. But some were among the most just the world has seen.
Sharia on the other hand is not to be confused with government. Sharia is a whole system whose aim is for the benefit of human well-being.

But sh'aria is in strict accordance with qu'ran, sunnah, ijma. Almost by definition this can become retrograde and arbitrary. A chance instruction preserved in a haddith can carry undue weight over human wisdom, reasoning or compassion.
The imitation of 7th century punishments is particularly strange. The qu'ran also seems to advocate a higher standard of compassion than evidenced in haddiths e.g. qu'ran says "no compulsion in religion" - as opposed to "kill the apostates!".

Men are free, unfortunately, to interpret the verse to their convenience, and indeed they do. Syria - report showed 25% women seriously beaten. Saudi Arabia - domestic abuse believed to be widespread. Pakistan - up to 80% of women suffered domestic violence (i actually know one, she lost a lot of weight from the stress), Palestine - 45% physically / sexually assaulted. These statistics are higher than in Western countries.

@wolfatnight The Prophet married older women, too, even many years older. 14 centuries ago in Arabia, marrying a young girl (and consummating the marriage AFTER puberty) was not unusual. She lived with him when she was 9, by most accounts, but some say she was 14.
