  • AWESOME ! - So loud !! Wish I coulda been there !!

Rock-n-Roll is a direct descendant of this style of music

  • I've written to Drummerworld about this oversight---Rufus was a GREAT drummer and a GREAT human being.

  • Rufus Speedy Jones!!!

He played for years with Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Maynard Fergusson and was one of the fastest drummers alive at the time... yet hasn't even got a wikipedia page or a mention on Drummerworld ^_^

  • Its a brilliant tune!. Actually its from a 1966 concert in London.. and the concert is recorded

  • Classic long fingers like Coltrane and Stanley Turrentine. I wouldn't even profess to playing the saxophone if I met him:) Monster of a horn player!

  • @peppersax I can't remember the two musicians who had the conversation (meaning, I'm too lazy to look it up), but it went like this: "Man, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis scares me." "Man, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis is SUPPOSED to scare you!"

  • @luvmyrecords I'm sure at one time or another, Lockjaw and Coltrane 'jammed' together. Too bad THAT was recorded.

  • @peppersax sorry, "wasn't"

  • WOW!

  • His solo is filled with so much passion but he looks completely relaxed which is quite amazing.

  • OMFG! This is the greatest one I have ever seen! Lockjaw has very long fingers...wow!

  • Rufus Jones, a master drummer with the greatest Big Band of all time.

  • kudos to groupshot! you've just mentioned a list of drummers who have no peer! only 1 word to explain rufus....EXPLOSIVE!!!!!

  • Rufus was no joke!

  • I'm sorry to tell the world but Rufus 'Speedy' Jones is in a class by himself. The second tier includes Krupa, Rich, Manne, Bellson, Blakey, etc. I'm old enough to have seen all of them in person. Unfortunately, he never got the press and thus, the recognition.

  • What can we say about "Lockjaw" but that he was one the great saxophone soloists in both jazz and blues players, having among the most characteristic, signature sounds on the instrument ever.

  • One would be correct to put Rufus Jones and Buddy Rich in a kindred kingdom of Drum. But rest assured, there are few indeed who can be so rate that; for we are not likely to see again such a pantheon of drummers as the master, Buddy Rich, and Papa Jo Jones, Sonny Greer, Rufus Jones, Zutty Singleton, Chick Webb, Big Sid Catlett, Dave Tough, Louie Bellson, Sonny Payne, and Gene Krupa. These were among -- but not all! -- of the greatest of the founding fathers of Big Band Drum.

  • Scrubbermuffin...I don't like guys that think keith Moon was great especially on agreat jazz drummer blog. I finally saw a you tube solo yesterday of your great Moon and I wish some of the other drummers who aren't quite sure why they endorse the drunken fool would watch the youtube solo. What a fuckin joke!!Great drummers ass..Leave that rotten corpse where it belongs. He wasn't even that good of a rock drummer always playing over the singer.

  • if one more metal head tells me jazz drummers ain't got it, I'm referring them to this video. 5 stars.

  • Amen to that!

What people don't seem to get is that with Metal, you're more or less restricted to playing within a 4/4 time structure, whereas Jazz is a lot more free-form, allowing improvisation along any kind of plane, be it Tempo or time signature.

Therefore, it's hard to compare them, apart from the fact that Jazz drumming is a LOT more complex. And interesting.

  • Saxation, I believe the issue is that if the metal heads had any grasp of music they would not be listening to that crap they listen to anyway.

  • Fabulous concert Chester. Are you a big jazz fan? If you don't live to far away you are welcome to come over for an incredible jazz session this Christmas hols. Where are you exactly?

  • jmsbk12345

"Are you a big jazz fan?"

Er... not really no lol! I tend to like less sophisticated stuff like blues, r'n'r and country (!)... tho I do like some swing stuff. I only came on the Basie by accident, but was sat on edge of seat for duration once I'd started. I thought it was stunning - all of them just brilliant musicians but happy to be part of a collective. Maybe I could be a jazz fan after all :D

    C

    PS: I'm in Nottingham.

  • Would someone please tell me which DVD I need to purchase for this concert. I've just seen the whole gig televised here in the UK and it is one of the very best basie gigs I've ever seen. The sound quality was immaculate.

  • I saw it mself last night (found it by accident) and it was absolutely brilliant from start to finish... I hope you get an answer.

  • joey jordison????....maybe if his name was joe or joseph.....give me a break...you have no clue......

  • the epitomy of swing!! rufus jones is a monster!!!!...where is this from??? can the audio be cleaned up?????

  • MY FAV. TUNE

  • Lockjaw! I first heard him with Basie at my high school in 1974-had never heard anything sound like that before!

  • Rufus is in the house. WOW!

  • just wish the sound was more clearer and sharper...but anyone can see it is a killer drum solo....btw this is the first time i have seen a video clip of mr speedy.....nothing like i thought he would look like.

  • the quality is so muffled it's hard to tell what the heck rufus is really doing ya know?

  • Joey Jordison for President!!!

  • Jordison is a hack compared to any decent jazz drummer.

  • Joey Jordison? Are you Serious? He ain't even in Their League. Not Even The Same Sport.

  • Not the same sport. Metal is a different sport to Jazz. You have sense!!

  • Sigh...you can't compare the two.

But if anything, Jazz drumming is many time mroe complex then metal drumming.

  • A drummer is supposed to know how to play. No excuses for playing a childish form of music (rock, metal hip hop slop, etc) You can either play or not.

  • rufus jones and buddy rich are the greatest drummers ever along with keith moon and john bonham

  • Superb. Rufus Jones never got the recognition he really deserved. He was right up there with the rest of the big boys.

  • Yes!
