Hey Obama & Democrats: Watch this series and grow a pair. Stand up to the BS. Stand up to the racism. Stand up to the Xenophobia. Stand by for yourself god dammit. Stand up for your ideals. Being Liberal is not a sin. Be proud of it.
The more things change, the more it stays the same... Four years since this clip was uploaded, and the current administration continues to cave in... Sad.
I agree. Im no democrat or liberal, but this PC agenda the left is pushing is really pathetic. Stand and deliver, fight back and show the world you arent cowards, but warriors in your own right.
@stringerboi I agree with everything Silver said in this clip, including the ideology, but people in general should stand up for what they believe in, with fire in their bellies. That doesn't mean "don't ever compromise", but don't start out prepared to give up at the first sign of resistance.
He was one of the best characters in the series and dominated every scene that he appeared in.
And what he says here also applies to moderate Republicans too scared to stand up to the Tea Party. When someone like Newt Gingrich is lambasted for mildly criticising a Tea Party policy then things are getting crazy.
Senator Vinick (Alan Alda) wouldn't last 5 minutes in today's Tea Party dominated Republican movement, and certainly would never be the presidential candidate.
@zedro1000 We're just trying to keep up with you fascist bastards. This is not the Eighties. No more scaredy-cats like Mondale and Dukakis. From now on, we call you people the fascists and fanatics and liars and bunglers and warmongers and criminals and incompetents that you are. No more "Please don't hurt me," from now on you hit us, we smack you back harder.
I'd quote the Connery "Chicago Way" line, but after one of you people shot up Tucson, it would be in poor taste.
@UncleMikeNJ Really? The guy who shot Tuscon was on the right? Yes, he hated Bush and hated Israel, and believed the US government is trying to control grammar, so he must have been a right winger.
@TomerMMHA He shot a Democrat and was obsessed with States' Rights and the gold standard. I'd say, "You do the math," but since no Republican has balanced the budget in half a century, that's out!
@UncleMikeNJ A man who is not left nor right shot a centrist politician (a dem, yes) and he was inspired by a republican woman he disagrees with? Yes, cos he cannot be just a lone nut.
Btw, Cho from VA Tech used what sounds like left wing rhetoric in his video, talking about the evil rich. So I guess the left is responsible for that shooting.
Or maybe not. Maybe Cho, as well as the Bush-hatin, Israel-hatin, nutcase from Tuscon, are both just lone gunmen.
The Sorkin seasons were the best TV ever. What we just watched was a minute-long tirade on "when did liberal become a bad thing?" and it rocked. This no matter which side of the spectrum a viewer might favour.
@Nedzorz1 You're right. And conservatives sometimes make the same point about their own side. Rush Limbaugh talked about the same thing a couple of years ago on CPAC. In either party, one should always question whether they're being too extreme, or too soft, and try to balance things out.
left for America dead centre for the UK, paradoxical how we can be monarchists and socialists or conservative monarchists or even liberal republicans
"Free" Trade just means that the multi-nationals -- who have NO loyalty to any country -- get to do whatever they want, the workers be damned...It is INCOMPATIBLE with democratic governments...FAIR trade is the answer.
Bring back trade policies which actually help the American people...The way they did in the fifties, sixties, seventies...Reagonomics and "trickle down" have done NOTHING for the vast majority Americans...It serves the Super-rich ONLY.
Obama, you gave the "working across the aisle" thing a shot, it didn't work. Republicans will never ever work for the good of America if it stands in their way of obtaining power. It's time to just say SCREW 'EM!
I suppose I can appreciate why you have to ask. I would delete or moderate comments which I found offensive or outrageously dishonest or slanderous. But let me put it this way. One of my favorite things ever is South Park. My threshold for offensive is way past reasonable. I would never delete something just because I disagreed with it. It would have to bear some mark of exceptionally disregarding some standard of basic humanity.
As an example - I am more than a little contemptuous of a few of the comments that have been posted on here previously, but I wouldn't consider any of them worthy of deletion.
@nlandess Fair enough. I liked the West Wing. Didn't always agree with their politics or their view of conservatives. However, I thought the show was well-written, smart, and of course brilliantly acted.
I thought at times it was one of the better written shows on TV. I am definitely left of center on many things, but I try and maintain an independence of thought. In general, I thought the show did a pretty good job of trying to portray both sides as being capable of good - and often failing. It's funny - the moments that were kind of scripted right out of the headlines - in particular the government shutdown over the budget - were the ones I found most unrealistic in many ways.
One of the best scenes on that show, EVER. And it's not just a left and right issue. Both parties have found themselves in that position one time or another. That conflict. The republicans are there today.
I loved that scene when I was pro-democrat, and I love it today as a conservative. And I loved Ron Silver as an actor long before I found out he got out of the closet as a pro-Bush guy.
Well, aren't you the voice of reasoned debate on a youtube page. God I'm not even American and I still love the tears, watching the Republicans rip themselves apart.
Not to be snotty about it, but yes, you are wrong. I posted this, as you could tell by reading the comment on the post itself, in the wake of some particularly craven (even by their standards) behavior by congressional democrats during the debate and votes over FISA and Bush's warrantless surveillance programs.
But Ron Silver is a fantastic actor, and I like the fact that this scene is about standing up for what you believe in, not tearing down the other guy.

No wonder Ron Silver loved the Bush administration, Bush and and the Party for a New American Century did everything A.I.P.A.C and Israel wanted. From the 911 inside job to destroying Israel's enemy, Iraq. His Zionist propaganda films will be enjoyed by those who do not want to think on their own but instead rely on Hollywood.

LOL he's already in office just look at how he hasn't done anything but worsened the economy & bowed to terrorists and weakened the US. He claims everyday to have a plan for this or that but then waits weeks to mention any hint at details because really he has no clue & only likes to hear himself talk. At least bush answered questions & didnt have to recycle speeches someone else wrote. The guy is a cult leader who reads. You want a puppet look to the cult leader LOL. 1403 days till hes out.
right when I heard the news of Rons passing, I thought of this clip. He was a great guy and a great actor. Thanks for everything Ron-- you are in good hands now.
His description is dead on. I loved the ending its perfectly sums up security during a liberal government. "we cowarded in the corner & said please dont hurt me." Then we get hit with an attack or someone invades a little country & we're suppose to go in and let the dogs of war out. Does it really make sense to raid a drug dealer after he's sold his drugs no of course not or after a rapist attacks? After the fact makes no sense & that's my issue especially when it ok for police 2 b preemptive.
Because this was Season 3, when a real writer was still doing the scripts. Any characters from season 5 through 7 were pale imitations of what they could've been if NBC hadn't driven the show's creator and head writer out the door.
Hillary Clinton was too scared to call herself a Liberal in the debates. Instead she said, "progressive". one, she is moderate-not progressive. And two, it leaves the door open for Republicans to have a patton to use the word however they want.

liberals are reactionary they react to things after they happen. After economy started tanking Nancy Pelosi & the democratic congress wanted a stimulious plan which didnt work after 9/11 congress wanted to go after terrorist & protecting the US from attacks. Even now as car makers tank suddenly congress wants to bail them out or homeowners. Always after the fact & thats why people disagree. After a seriel rapist rapes again they make a law trying to keep him in jail. After the fact...Liberals
In this scene, Bruno expresses a viewpoint that I think a lot of liberals have but have struggled to articulate. Of course, they slightly undermined this scene kater in the series when Bruno decides to run a Republican campaign, albeit one by a very moderate candidate.
