The darts weight about 6 ounces (give or take). I can only throw them about 70 yards or so. I don't throw much for distance...beats the hell out of my arm (tennis elbow type stuff). T
Interesting video. I really liked the camera angle taken from the target. I'd love to see a side by side (primitive bow vs atlatl) comparison of what the prey saw when the hunter made his shot. The bow gives a much greater economy of motion. It must have been very difficult to hunt from ambush with the atlatl. I picture atlatl hunts more like a chase than an ambush.
Flagging game with the throwing movement would definitely be a problem. These darts are also alot slower than an arrow. Throwing from behind blinds (you can throw over and be hidden) or from tree-stand like situations would be the trick. Got to get real close too. I know guys who hunt with atlatls. Check out Thunderbird Atlatl (google search will find his site).
I'm actually using Movie Maker too. I do some initial editing on a program that came with my sony camera, but I then use the movie maker to finish it up because the other one doesn't work all that well either. Thanks for the kind words about the videos. I'm having fun messin around with this stuff. Tom
Whatever works best for you! I find that I can be more accurate with longer darts, but people use all different sizes. I always recommend keeping an open mind and trying different things to find what works best for you. have fun!
I liked it Tom slow-mo was pretty good and I liked the black and white.O and some cool news about our next video. We are buying a wireless spy-camera to mount on the shaft of a dart to video a darts flight.
Shows that the simpler the motion, the better. Just have to trust it, not try to do too much.

How much do the darts weigh, and how far can you potentially launch them?

Also, if the projectile was around 1.6 kg how far do you think it'd go?

I have no idea. Sorry.

Great videos. Love what you have done for the Atlatl. If I may ask, what video editing software are you using. All I have tried to use
was windows movie maker and I can not get it
to work right. I know other people have had
this problem. Thanks.

I have five (5) foot Darts currently....do you recommend longer ones? Seems most folks have 8 footers.

Dear Paleoplanet,
very interesting this video that shows the technique launch with propeller.
The shots show very well the skill of ladies who use tool.
Thanks for this video very useful!
