Mid length makes a difference. KAC uses their own version of midlength but the logic is sound and backed by science. I converted my Colt to a mid gas (new barrel, etc) and it's much different, less recoil. Carbine gas is for the Vietnam Era carbines. I live in the 21st century.
A Muzzle break compensator VS. a flash hider !?! Your comparing apples to oranges. Ones designed to reduce recoil the other is not. Deceptive advertising.
the pws brakes are the reason I can shoot bowling pins at 100 yards with my draco pistol the reason I can shoot my ptr91 1 handed and the reason why when I shoot my ars at night the only thing I see is where the steel rounds hit rock sometimes. Maybe non sense to you but not to anyone else.
BCM makes great stuff its just to bad their upper receiver groups are never in stock. I've been waiting at least 6 months for a "16" standard m4 upper.
@desertarsenalist I'd recomend a midlength 16" upper. It's just the way a 16" AR should be. Leave the M4 style to the.....M4's with their 14.5" barrels. Plus with a midlength you attach standard bayonets if thats your fancy.
Smoother operating, lower recoil, sights in correctly ( longer sight radius plus its correct for the 16" flight pattern) and...c'mon Mid is just the way to go. The mid was made for a reason.
I've since removed the PWS. The other video of this upper with an A2 flash hider clearly illustrates that it's not the break. Both the PWS and the Battlecomp are silly nonsense.
@The87Markm are compensators really just superficial then? i thought they actually did something. you have piqued my interest. can you share more information?
I own 2 BCM uppers (14.5" w/Perm FH and an 11.5") and recommend their products wholeheartedly. But this video is a ridiculous comparison between an upper with a muzzle break and one without. If you really wanted to do a relevant comparison, why don't you compare the PWS against the Battle Comp BC?
The PWS is in pieces. I had to cut it off since it was permed. There's a newer video showing the gun shot off a pack with the A2 flash hider. I was able to keep 27 out of 31 rounds on a target at 50 yards. This was two strings of 3 round burst fire.
I actually removed the PWS. If I get a chance, I could re-do the comparison. The middy still shoots smoother than the Carbine, but the PWS did make a difference.
mtchbrian - The BCM upper has the brake permed. So I can't change that. And I'm not paying almost a hundred bucks to buy a PWS556 for my other gun. The test IS WHAT IT IS. Informal experiment with full disclosure of what is on each upper. You can clearly hear the cyclic rate difference between the two if you take nothing else from the video..... and that has dick to do with the muzzle device.
@davism4a1 uhh no buddy, read even what the video maker said., that midlengths are alot smoother, which i kno all to well, but the majority of the muzzle rise seen and not seen in this video is because of the wonderful guys at Primary Weapons.,
I am a big fan of BCM but, for this video to be scientifically valid, they would have had to have used the same muzzle break and buffer. If this test were redone with say A2X/A2 flash hiders on both and carbine length buffer systems it would be a much more accurate comparison. That all being said, BCM is about as close as you can get to actually buying a Colt.
interesting vid, thanks for sharing. I think it would be more interesting to compare the 2 gas system in the same exact configuration... I guess the PWS and longer HGs (=support hand position) helped the middy a lot ;-)
Not really. The SAME technique.. good or bad was used to compare the two. Anyone can hear the rate of fire difference.
LAV and Hackethorn even commented that 15 yards was max effective range for full auto, off hand, assault rifle fire. Anything more than that is "wasting ammo" according to LAV who was doing similar shooting on Tactical Arms.
I felt alot better about my shooting after hearing someone's opinion who ACTUALLY knows a little something on the topic.
This shoot wasn’t meant to be exact science. It was a cold run at full auto using two different systems. The carbine upper is off of my long time favorite general purpose range carbine, so I didn’t pick a bad upper in order to handicap the carbine’s performance.
Ignoring the muzzle brake factor, you can still hear a HUGE cyclic rate difference between the two. The mid length just flat runs smoother. Both uppers were run on the same lower/buffer system.
I really didn't expect much of a difference between the two after seeing my mediocre group on the BCM target. But when I ripped the 5 rounds off with the carbine upper, the difference was huge. You can see I get knocked back in my stance a bit from not expecting such a dramatic difference in cycling smoothness.
True. I don't regularly shoot full auto, so.... my technique isn't polished! I'm a long time AR shooter, and am no slouch with marksmanship on a rifle, but Full Auto isn't my regular kind of shooting.
I shot the two uppers from the same distance using the same stance and grip. The BCM has the brake permed. I couldn't remove it for an actual apples to apples comparison... so I disclosed that the middy has a brake and the carbine has a flash hider.

No. The PWS still makes a difference. It's just that the 14.5 middy runs so smooth compared to a carbine gas system.

doughboy334 - Yes. There's the same A1 stock/rifle buffer system for both uppers.

why not put the same flash hider on both rifles to take some of the variables out of the test. ?

As others have said, shooter technique needs to be resolved before making comparisons to promote the product.

@The87Markm yea, but you also gotta consider the effectiveness of the pws break. That will help. Those middies are smooth though.
