  • Nice tone dude, I own a Thumb NT5 myself. What're your on board eq settings?

  • Ese Bajo a lo malosetty muy hermosoo.

  • Comment removed

  • I quiete dislike it... but to each his own ;) Keep on groovin'

  • AMAZING! =o0

  • I have the same bass (in 5 strings, and neck through). How did you get such a nice tone out of such a growl-y bass? Are those the stock MECs or did you switch them out?

Also, what strap is that? The Thumb is killing my shoulder. I'm tempted to resell it and buy an Ibanez just because of it's weight.

  • @squiresuzuki i have an ibanez k5 i would trade.

  • @squiresuzuki i have an ibanez k5 i would trade.

  • @CesarHash123 If you have another $1500 maybe.

  • I really wouldn't call this "funk." It's more like jazz fusion or something like that... It's a different thing all unto itself. It's really cool, though, and unique.

Reminds me of what Branford Marsalis was up to about 10 years ago - a mix of jazz with hip-hop beats and a bit of funk sprinkled in.

  • This man can can do things on a bass that I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to do, even if I practice every day for the next 10 years!

  • Very nice!!!

  • I wonder whts the name of ur pickup, is very nice=]

  • nice jam, really cool, but some parts sounds bit messy, but nice jam though, keep up the good work

    fellow bassist =D

  • good man

  • paul frank

  • This is finger funking awesome.

    nice bass

  • very strong exercise! could you give us the tabs?

  • lovely bass, amazing bass player, what more could i want? :D

  • Is that an extra pick up in the middle?

  • some parts is cool but the fast parts i think they sound bad

  • Sexy warwick!

  • muy bueno, que buen estilo, igual no es solo funk eso, hay mezcla de jazz

  • Nice. Dig the jazz chords too.

  • Warwick Thumb bass if I'm correct?

  • Comment removed

  • i love bass chords

  • All I can say is WOW

  • Im am the only one that read "4 FINGER F*CK" ? dam...

  • do they make fretted versions of the bass you used in the footprints solo? if so what brand is it and whats the price range? i need a new bass

  • you should cover Saxon's Bavarian Rhapsody !

That's a very nice bass solo

  • @ballison404

i'd like to see you do any better

    Great playing man!

  • @ijazzmunki Ballison is a jealous douche bag.

  • Love it man, good to see people jamming their own styles and not trying to follow others ideas of how music should or shouldn't be.

  • hey man what kind of bass you playing on cus it sounds good for a 4 string, lol kinda sound like stanly clark!

  • @andreking84 it's a warwick corvette

  • @feverhood I'm pretty sure its not a corvette guys. I own the 5 string thumb neck through and I'm pretty sure this is a thumb. The reason I say that is the fingerboard. I'm a big fan of Warwicks, I've had 2 corvettes and 2 thumbs, and I've never once seen a corvette with an ebony fingerboard.

  • @nephilymbass1 it's an original Thumb Bass Thru-neck from 1990 - I sold it two years ago - a great bass but it weighed a ton and I'm much happier with my new basses now - this one had a wenge fingerboard and 26 frets

  • 4 fingers damn-.-

i play a lot with 3 fingers but not with for :D

  • @ballison404 did it ever occur to you the time changes he had in that piece

  • you play well matey

  • @ijazzmunki Dude don't listen to this guy, you're amazing, and everyone knows it. You're probably one of my biggest inspirations, more than jaco, more than victor, more than all those guys, I just like your style.

  • @Cornbreadddd

...He's good but not that good dude. Damn.

  • Is that a Warwick? Really nice bass.

  • @ijazzmunki

I dont know what the hell he is talking about.

That was sick, its in GROOVE.

And it has taste and style.

    Definitely original sounding.

ballison seems so conditional like he has something to say.

But wait who has 400,000+ played video?

  • potential.

  • my damn mike flynn. you absolutely kick ass!! those chords are wonderful.

  • i like the whole Victor Wooten thing going on here. makes me a happy camper

  • Do you put those wood pieces between your pickups on all your basses?

    That's a neat idea

  • @ballison404 Ha ha...check out his recent videos!

  • Mike, this is my favorite video on youtube! Your jazz playing is phenomenal, simply out of this world. Obviously your techniques are posted in videos but i was wondering what kind of chords/altered scales do you use to voice your jazz sound. Thanks a ton, your music is amazing!

  • 127 bieber fans watched this vid

  • pffffffffff.............thats nice!!!!!!

  • pffffffffff.............

  • warwick?

  • 4 finger funk groove?!?! :O that's what i make girls call me in bed!

  • @Partypunkarn hahahaha nice one :D

  • wow, great skills man.

  • Funkiest thing I've heard all day. Tight groove man 5/5

  • DAWG UR THE DAMN DEVIL HIMSELF......

  • Like your T shirt

  • Corvette?

  • fucking yeah!

  • 125+ Guitarists didn't like this

  • @SpearWieldingOctopus and they were right to

  • @mynameis538 Well they are entitled to their own opinion(s), but I've had some rough encounters with guitar players that look down on bass players through their noses telling us to stop being creative and going into a higher octave(pricks).

  • nice shirt.

  • Dude who could you dislike this????

125 out of 751 people must be deaf or something and are just watching a guy play bass.

  • Nice can u email me the da tabs.

  • Nice playing, nice sound, is that a warwick?

  • Amazing!!!

Greetings from Salta - Argentina ^_^

  • Im not a bass player but this sounds so cool. You have to appreciate it.

  • what bass do you have?

  • Very nice, and interesting techniques throughout.

Can you groove within a band too? Not meant to be a pointed question, but let's never forget the primary role for bass!

    Keep doing it!!!

    Andy Hodge

  • @pointydog hi Andy - see the other vids on my channel - I posted a couple of recent ones with my funk band - totally grooving and in the pocket - see the 'Southwick' by Maceo and 'Crazy' with my band Groove Digger

  • @pointydog the primary role for bass is for fools like you to get smashed over the head for telling everyone what they think they should do. Your opinion sucks butthole

  • @pointydog There is no primary role for bass. There's a way people typically play it, but you can do whatever you want with any instrument.

It's clear to me from this video that he could groove within a band, anyway. Very nice grooving with the drum track.

I get what you mean, though... there are wonder-bassists who can play extremely fast, but are useless in a band setting. But this guy is grooving the whole time.

  • nice!! u have impressed me

  • is this standard tuning?

  • you've got some sick skills bredah!

  • wow, very interesting right hand style.

  • Hey man, firstly just wanted to congratulate u on ur awesome vids, i've bin watchin them 4 awhile and they're great. But i wanted to ask you about that finger ramp you've got installed btwn ur pickups on ur thumb bass. Coz iv got 1 myself and have been thinking of doing the EXACT same thing to make it more comfortable to play. Did you get a shop to do it or did you install it urslef? Was just wondering what u used to do it. Cheers:) keep up the mad playing!

  • alll those dislikes are from from hating wannabe bassists

  • great technics nice play however for my taste a lack off feeling

  • WOOOOW, your bass is realy beautifull. very good song ^^

  • is it jusst me or is the tube taking forever to load?

  • sounds like cucumber slumber in the beginning. Cool jam

  • sweet bass dude. What kind?

  • where did you get the backing track? like the drums and what not

  • @R0b1zzle137 this was when I was using BFD, I don't really like it but it has some great drum patterns, the one here is a series of loops on a nice lazy funk groove, I got lucky when I jammed along that it all seemed to fit...

  • massive respect, awesome chops!

    ~lox

  • Fantastic ideas.

  • great groove !!! i really like it!!!! keep it up!!!

    GinnyRode

  • kiss my grits

  • i like ur shirt lol

can i get tabs for this?

  • really good stuff! can i get the tabs for these somehow?

  • nice bass... i need to get one of those.. mine is falling apart hehe

  • balls are back

  • whats betwen the pickups??

  • wow..so melodic and rhythmic..

    excellent!

  • Nice playing but you need to fix your right hand. You'll get carpal tunnel that way. As well as your left. I got Carpal Tunnel in my left from improper technique Use more elbow and less wrist.

  • Having your hand positioned like that can't be good you're going to get arthritis

  • Actually most parts of this video does not groove at all. Cool ideas though.

  • fanstastic :O

  • what is the ramp betwen both pickups for?

  • I've got the same bass. Is yours a Wenge neck or an Ovangkol neck? I've got one with an Ovangkol neck and an ebony fretboard.

  • Do you miss this bass at all? I would. haha

  • good idea but too many notes bro

  • those chords sound sick. i'm gonna have to steal em! lol j/k... but seriously.

  • Whats that you have between the pickups?

  • @tehgaff08

it's a finger ramp, similar to what Gary Willis uses. It basically prevents the fingers from going too far under the strings. It allows for a faster picking hand technique:)

    Hope that answered your questions.

  • can someone tell me what the chords are from 0:46-0:55 ?

  • is that a throw monkey t-shirt? like the yo-yo brand?

and fucking nice grove man, i really enjoy it. its beautiful i must say.

  • niiiice - thumbs are great for this kinda of stuff.. im not at ur kind of level but i get it, i do little of that kind of thing.. my thumb BO has just the right kind of tension for that stuff to flow and sing like that..

you NT sounds lush though.. more consistent, and better sustain.. mines great but it can sound a little flat sometimes..

good work bro! ill be favouriting this one :) x

  • Four Fingers, One Thumb.

    Beautiful style man, Beautiful.

  • wow, really nice bass guitar :)

  • loving the groove i reckon once you tighten it'll be the shit, but you already know. lovin those chords hope you don't mind if i cat that off you .but hey sharings caring, if your ever in london we should jam.

  • Does Warwick even make those anymore? I had an opportunity to buy a Thumb 4 string for $600 like 8 years ago...

And I passed it up like the fucking idiot that I apparently am. :(

  • Jesus

    I agree.

  • Well, rent was due and I was playing the "Mr. Responsible" card.

    Rent could have waited.

  • muy bueno flaco que buenas progresiones que groove!

  • it looks like jeff berlin's technique. I tipp my hat in you direction sir

    LOVE YOUR BASS BTW

  • ugly bass but great sound all the matters

  • sounds great your solo!, what bass are you using? does your bass works in jazz? thanks

  • Warwick Thumb NT 4

  • Ive got a warwick myself i love the sound of them

  • sounds jazzy

  • damn I wish I could change the rating I gave you! I was like, 'it's pretty cool but not my thing....' then you whacked out some increidble shit that is truly 5 star! Hopefully I'll be as good as you with some practise some day :)

  • like your style very much! got a lot of soul!

  • the chords are sooooo epic

  • Funky lol

  • defenitely plays better than me ^^

25 years....mhm ok that's also much longer then i'm..well not practicin' bass but then i'm on this earth...-_-

  • How do you program the drums? Love your thumb!

  • awesome playing man! Is that a Warwick thumb? bolt-on or NT?

  • it's a NT

  • @ropy89: .. i think this will come .... i´m in the same situation like you, and just trying to stay cool .... :)

  • yeah lovely bass what is it?

  • ...i'm a beginner in bass playin', and what this guy does here makes me wanna cry...i wanna play like this too, i don't mean so fast, but the tunes, awesome tunes this guy's using...and the chords...

i practice every fuckin' day and what i really want is to get to know the tunes position so well like this guy does.

shit man, got no cash to take lessons :(

  • dude I've been playing for 25 years and mostly self taught - there are hundreds of free lessons on Youtube and all over the web - better yet go and play with other people and jam along to your favourite songs - that way you start to train your ear and begin to listen to music differently - work on your scales and modes and do basic finger picking exercises to help with your coordination - try and playing with a drummer to get your groove going - practice is the key...

  • many thanks for your advise mate, i'm on scales everyday at least for an hour or 2, also i like to jam and especially to play along only with drums. when i play with our drummer(have like a rookie band) i see i'm makin' some progress, i start to get ideas, wich notes to use and so.

i'm on this bass playin' stuff as much as possible and i'm practicin' everytime i have the opportunity...even at work :)

  • @ijazzmunki Just out of curiosity, to what extent are you "aware" of what you will play when you jam/improvise like that? In the sense that, do you know exactly how the notes will sound before you play them, or do you go by where your fingers seem to want to go (so more of a gut feeling due to experience)? Of course, ear training will help with knowing how notes will sound and things like that, but do you have any such exercises that you do/did to improve on that?

  • @ropy89 Learn some scales =] helps not just with improvisation, but understanding the bass

  • @ropy89 - practice, practice then practice more and when your tired or your fingers bleed or your shoulder won't take anymore; practice again....it's the only way.

  • @trackablesource i'm totally down with that ! i got myself a book full of bass scales and since then i do the scale at least an hour each day but when i got more time i rather practice them for 2 hours or more...and then comes the rest.

anyhow, thanks for the advise ! :)

  • @ropy89 i've been teaching myself to play for about 5 years, i sucked at it for maybe 4 years before i started to get pretty good. just keep at it, it takes time but it is definitely worth it. i play for 2-3 hours every day with no lessons, just a victor wooten tab book and a flea tab book.

  • @brunnerdudes - i practice a lot since i've seen this vid, for real bro' :) and i see i'm making progress step by step...i really practice hard every single day, and that keeps me goin' on and thanks for the motivating words bredah ! ;)

  • @ropy89 true that man. a teacher will teach up to a certain point (notes, some scales, shit like that) but the rest you gotta learn it on your own, learning about music, listen to songs, play with them, mess around with notes with that song and u'll figure out which notes go with what chords etc. and even more true, jam with people, even if u mess up a lot on keys, u'll learn. go and jam

  • Nice finger ramp mate.

What kind of bass is this, if you don't mind my asking?

    Excellent playing, too, of course.

  • ALso!!! you should check out my bass video!!!!

  • darn how much?

    i want one

  • My hand hurts looking at yours

    do you ever get tendinitis?

  • No I don't - though this bass wasn't that good for my posture or hand position - so I sold it!

  • @ijazzmunki .what did you replace it with???having the same problem with my 5nt..love the sound but the warwick just does not suit me..on the hunt for something else now..

  • @ijazzmunki how much did you pay for that bad boy when you got it? i want a thumb bass... but they're pretty pricey. specially the NT's.

  • funkay!

  • wat kind of a bass is tha the pick ups are massive are they passive or active??

  • Warwick Thumb. Theyre only JJs with a ramp in the middle.

  • great chords, harmonies, nice, real nice !

  • Love the thumb. Very subtle, wonderful tone. You too man, keep goin.

  • Dude I love it!

I tried to play the chords section you did but I keep failing everytime (beginner bassist with high ambition XD)

Really nice job! keep up the good work!

Btw also love your bass! what bass is it?

  • Amazing!

  • i noticed his hands are damn huge!!

  • dude...don´t get me wrong. As far as i saw, i can easily say that you are able to play everything with everybody around music...professional mainstream too. But when I listen to the word "groove", i always think about the formula: less notes + more feeling. And for that, u got my 4 stars.

    keep going.

  • nyc bass dude, fucking sick technique with ur right hand fuck i tryed to lern how to du it, its hard as hell

  • I dig your right hand technique sooo much.

  • how do you like the Billy Sheehan technique with the Fingers level or "Bending from the knucle in the finger" Vs the whole finger.....how long did it take to learn.

  • that's some great groovin' going on there!

    keep it up ;)

  • 26 frets... well, thats... uniqe

  • @p33t3r5l94 Yeha your starting to see 26 on the warwicks you should check out jerzy drozd basses. 36 frets on some of them.

  • ive seen 36, ive played on a fretless 36, but never seen a 26

ive played on the bass of the bassist from susperia god damn it!!!!

  • great

  • sloppy
