I have the same bass (in 5 strings, and neck through). How did you get such a nice tone out of such a growl-y bass? Are those the stock MECs or did you switch them out?
Also, what strap is that? The Thumb is killing my shoulder. I'm tempted to resell it and buy an Ibanez just because of it's weight.
I really wouldn't call this "funk." It's more like jazz fusion or something like that... It's a different thing all unto itself. It's really cool, though, and unique.
Reminds me of what Branford Marsalis was up to about 10 years ago - a mix of jazz with hip-hop beats and a bit of funk sprinkled in.
@feverhood I'm pretty sure its not a corvette guys. I own the 5 string thumb neck through and I'm pretty sure this is a thumb. The reason I say that is the fingerboard. I'm a big fan of Warwicks, I've had 2 corvettes and 2 thumbs, and I've never once seen a corvette with an ebony fingerboard.
@nephilymbass1 it's an original Thumb Bass Thru-neck from 1990 - I sold it two years ago - a great bass but it weighed a ton and I'm much happier with my new basses now - this one had a wenge fingerboard and 26 frets
@ijazzmunki Dude don't listen to this guy, you're amazing, and everyone knows it. You're probably one of my biggest inspirations, more than jaco, more than victor, more than all those guys, I just like your style.
Mike, this is my favorite video on youtube! Your jazz playing is phenomenal, simply out of this world. Obviously your techniques are posted in videos but i was wondering what kind of chords/altered scales do you use to voice your jazz sound. Thanks a ton, your music is amazing!
@mynameis538 Well they are entitled to their own opinion(s), but I've had some rough encounters with guitar players that look down on bass players through their noses telling us to stop being creative and going into a higher octave(pricks).
@pointydog hi Andy - see the other vids on my channel - I posted a couple of recent ones with my funk band - totally grooving and in the pocket - see the 'Southwick' by Maceo and 'Crazy' with my band Groove Digger
@pointydog the primary role for bass is for fools like you to get smashed over the head for telling everyone what they think they should do. Your opinion sucks butthole
@pointydog There is no primary role for bass. There's a way people typically play it, but you can do whatever you want with any instrument.
It's clear to me from this video that he could groove within a band, anyway. Very nice grooving with the drum track.
I get what you mean, though... there are wonder-bassists who can play extremely fast, but are useless in a band setting. But this guy is grooving the whole time.
Hey man, firstly just wanted to congratulate u on ur awesome vids, i've bin watchin them 4 awhile and they're great. But i wanted to ask you about that finger ramp you've got installed btwn ur pickups on ur thumb bass. Coz iv got 1 myself and have been thinking of doing the EXACT same thing to make it more comfortable to play. Did you get a shop to do it or did you install it urslef? Was just wondering what u used to do it. Cheers:) keep up the mad playing!
@R0b1zzle137 this was when I was using BFD, I don't really like it but it has some great drum patterns, the one here is a series of loops on a nice lazy funk groove, I got lucky when I jammed along that it all seemed to fit...
Nice playing but you need to fix your right hand. You'll get carpal tunnel that way. As well as your left. I got Carpal Tunnel in my left from improper technique Use more elbow and less wrist.
it's a finger ramp, similar to what Gary Willis uses. It basically prevents the fingers from going too far under the strings. It allows for a faster picking hand technique:)
niiiice - thumbs are great for this kinda of stuff.. im not at ur kind of level but i get it, i do little of that kind of thing.. my thumb BO has just the right kind of tension for that stuff to flow and sing like that..
you NT sounds lush though.. more consistent, and better sustain.. mines great but it can sound a little flat sometimes..
loving the groove i reckon once you tighten it'll be the shit, but you already know. lovin those chords hope you don't mind if i cat that off you .but hey sharings caring, if your ever in london we should jam.
damn I wish I could change the rating I gave you! I was like, 'it's pretty cool but not my thing....' then you whacked out some increidble shit that is truly 5 star! Hopefully I'll be as good as you with some practise some day :)
...i'm a beginner in bass playin', and what this guy does here makes me wanna cry...i wanna play like this too, i don't mean so fast, but the tunes, awesome tunes this guy's using...and the chords...

dude I've been playing for 25 years and mostly self taught - there are hundreds of free lessons on Youtube and all over the web - better yet go and play with other people and jam along to your favourite songs - that way you start to train your ear and begin to listen to music differently - work on your scales and modes and do basic finger picking exercises to help with your coordination - try and playing with a drummer to get your groove going - practice is the key...
many thanks for your advise mate, i'm on scales everyday at least for an hour or 2, also i like to jam and especially to play along only with drums. when i play with our drummer(have like a rookie band) i see i'm makin' some progress, i start to get ideas, wich notes to use and so.
i'm on this bass playin' stuff as much as possible and i'm practicin' everytime i have the opportunity...even at work :)
@ijazzmunki Just out of curiosity, to what extent are you "aware" of what you will play when you jam/improvise like that? In the sense that, do you know exactly how the notes will sound before you play them, or do you go by where your fingers seem to want to go (so more of a gut feeling due to experience)? Of course, ear training will help with knowing how notes will sound and things like that, but do you have any such exercises that you do/did to improve on that?
@ropy89 - practice, practice then practice more and when your tired or your fingers bleed or your shoulder won't take anymore; practice again....it's the only way.
@trackablesource i'm totally down with that ! i got myself a book full of bass scales and since then i do the scale at least an hour each day but when i got more time i rather practice them for 2 hours or more...and then comes the rest.
@ropy89 i've been teaching myself to play for about 5 years, i sucked at it for maybe 4 years before i started to get pretty good. just keep at it, it takes time but it is definitely worth it. i play for 2-3 hours every day with no lessons, just a victor wooten tab book and a flea tab book.
@brunnerdudes - i practice a lot since i've seen this vid, for real bro' :) and i see i'm making progress step by step...i really practice hard every single day, and that keeps me goin' on and thanks for the motivating words bredah ! ;)
@ropy89 true that man. a teacher will teach up to a certain point (notes, some scales, shit like that) but the rest you gotta learn it on your own, learning about music, listen to songs, play with them, mess around with notes with that song and u'll figure out which notes go with what chords etc. and even more true, jam with people, even if u mess up a lot on keys, u'll learn. go and jam
@ijazzmunki .what did you replace it with???having the same problem with my 5nt..love the sound but the warwick just does not suit me..on the hunt for something else now..
dude...don´t get me wrong. As far as i saw, i can easily say that you are able to play everything with everybody around music...professional mainstream too. But when I listen to the word "groove", i always think about the formula: less notes + more feeling. And for that, u got my 4 stars.
how do you like the Billy Sheehan technique with the Fingers level or "Bending from the knucle in the finger" Vs the whole finger.....how long did it take to learn.
Nice tone dude, I own a Thumb NT5 myself. What're your on board eq settings?

dude...don´t get me wrong. As far as i saw, i can easily say that you are able to play everything with everybody around music...professional mainstream too. But when I listen to the word "groove", i always think about the formula: less notes + more feeling. And for that, u got my 4 stars.
keep going.
