I lived for Saturdays as a kid to watch this. Big crush on Lewis Collins at the time but now I think Martin Shaw was sexier...he's aged a lot better too. Still sexy at ?66!!!
I have started to watch this show since I got a new tv. It is great and today they are on, all day, one after the other. I had never seen this show before; born overseas. All of them are NEW episodes to me; sorry to be enjoying them more than you lot. . On the downside, I've seen every 'Murder She Wrote', so those when they come on the telly, are not so interesting any more; they were my favourite. . I never guessed that 'he' is George Gently. Hooray for tv. . Cheers. from, del-boy.
Love this show, was born in the mid 90s but even I can see it beats the modern day crap. Long live 70s classics! My dad was also born and grew up near the old gas works where they filmed it so played a part in me seeing it!
@4bdemon666 Yeah, I started wtaching them the last few weeks, having not seen any of them for 30 years! I like it but found it a bit too grim and hard-nosed when I was a kid, but now I see just how dman good the plots and characters really were. I want the box set for xmas!
Forget the famous American shows of the period (which I love too) - IMHO, this is the best opening theme tune of them all. Laurie Johnson's brief would have been "write something tough, loud, exciting and funky" - and boy, didn't he do just that.
i remember an episode where a young woman was pushed out of the window, and they showed a the scene as a flash back of her falling at different angles, i cant remember the name of the episode, can some please tell me?..thank you!
Phowaarr Martin Shaw was gorgeous in this, used to love the re-runs, actually he's not so bad now but give me The Professionals over Judge John Deed anyday.
@5eurocups2005 Bodie was a bonehaed, and I could not stand that character Doyle was the better of those two men Doyle though whereas bonehead Bodie was a wally.
One of the best series ever and what a theme tune!!
A pity it's relegated to ITV4 with it's cut to ribbons editions and on-screen logo defacing the picture. Put this back on the main ITV channel to give it a new lease of life DOG-free and unedited to cut through the sea of pathetic dross that's made up the schedule for years now.
too right ! Why is it most black people think and twist everything a white person is saying even if its not to them in a negative and racist way. Music was playing in a local pub and two coloured people walked past and went to the local police station saying the music was offensive when it was an eighties hit !!!
@wolfq yeah they did, they only made one series. It didn't have the appeal of the original or the awesome interaction between the characters, but it was watchable. It was hardly promoted and only available on Sky One and so no one seemed to know it even existed until it was all over. Edward Woodward was 'Cowley''s equivalent , it was not awful overall.. but not as good as the original of course...! It was "The New Professionals"
he actually never passed the selection course as you cant take it unless you have a minimum of 3 years service in one of the forces. I understand he trained and spent some time with the SAS to help in his role
he played in the mojo's in the 60's, drummer i think - the lead singer at the time was deak vernon who lived next door to me- sady he's no longer with us - small world eh!
Phat Bass Trombones and High note trumpets....these 70` Theme Songs are BOMBS with their funky lines and floppy Bassguitars. All these unknown Studio musicians are my heros.
Reminds me of Sunday nights at home, 9pm to 10pm, nice way to finish off the weekend, as soon as the closing credits rolled Mum would shout "C'mon, straight to bed, school tomorrow!" and I could almost cry at the thought. Superb, TV seemed to much better in those days.
@thegarbage HaHaHa, that's a peach of a comment mate ! I remember that exact same thing, it's funny how it was seen as a kind of tough grown up program back then and now it's on during the day same as the Sweeny. "but mum the professionals are coming on, I'll go to bed when it's finished !" then I would look at my dad praying for back up, he would nod, then I would say "see dad says it's ok" Great days for sure !
@jr2nd This was one of my favorite tv shows, growing up in Calabar, Nigeria in the early 80s. There was an epsiode they met a kick-boxer who beat them up. Another episode in which Doyle was shot!
Man this takes me back ! Did anyone else get the Professionals CI5 box for their birthday or Christmas ? It had the cap gun, little spy camera, CI5 badge, and a few other things that I can't remember, was about 6 or 7 yrs old and the camera had real film, made my Christmas...........well it was the 70's.
@CreoleCommando Hiya Mike, thanks for sending me the video I've just watched it again and downloaded it, yeh me too, I never missed an episode when I was a kid, I still watch the odd one now and then and I still really enjoy it (Lol). Wow I would never have guessed that people as far away from Britian as you are would even have heard of the Professionals, I'm from Scotland just like Gordon Jackson (Cowley).
This show was the first movie/TV show ever in the world to use a laser sight. Nowadays we take laser sights for granted but it was this show that in one episode, did it first.
probably the best memories i have is going to bed early and getting up to watch with this show old man.. dad and son time guns and stuff while mum was asleep.
the tune still rocks.. must have heard a few ripoffs on the dance floor in the early 90's
If they remade this, int he interests of PC-ness Bodie would be a black man and Doyle would be a lesbian. And thjey would drive around in Fiat Pandas.
No no, not a fiat Panda, it has to be some sort of hybrid that uses poison gas for fuel and has fresh air and comfy cushions coming out of the exhaust.
But where was the old stone railway station? with no roof they always filmed in, eg Broadsword mines episode, and the booby trapped caravan episode, and is it still standing, or some wanky Comet/ Staples/ Halfords industrial estate now?
@jaldorian only according to the Daily Mirror though (the newspaper equivalent of prison toliter paper in the UK)...I'm not sure how he could have passed the entrance requirements without being an enlisted member of the forces and entitled to take them in the first place ;)
@jaldorian Lewis Collins NEVER attempted selection for any UKSF, he always suggested that he would like to but his status meant he couldnt. Because he claims he would have liked to doesnt mean he would have passed though, every professional soldier wants to be part of their countries elite wether its our own SAS or the yank Squeals, sorry seals. Anyway, that aside, he def is a top bloke and should have done more.
Kids on both sides of the Atlantic may think they're lucky nowadays, with x-boxes, wii's etc - but they weren't as lucky as us who grew up watching this ...
good old ITV 4. I'm definitely middled aged now and the clothes remind me of the lads I went to school with - those checked bomber jackets with big collars, big sideburns and the smoking! everybody was at it, apart from our heroes:) And can anybody tell me, was it real (Martin Shaw's curly hair), or a touch of the Kevin Keegan's! Ace theme tune and excellent show too.
also did anybody ever see Mr Shaw in the tv series of The Scarlet Pimpernel, with Richard E Grant? Many years ago now. I was transfixed to the small screen :)
For anyone iterested ITV4 is showing re-runs of The Professionals quite frequently in the evenings at the moment. I wasn't born when it was first shown but it's fantastic, brilliant writing & brilliant performancnes & a young Martin Shaw & Lewis Collins = so beautiful to look at!
Also i think that Lewis Collins should have been chosen for James Bond. The Bodie character he plays is much more like the original Bond, which is portrayed in the books. I don't understand why so many people liked Sean Connery - he was crap at playing Bond. Roger Moore was much better and Bodie was more like a Roger Moore.
@guthywoodry when i used to watch it back in 1997 on re-runs, i used to like Bodie more because of the big front he puts on, but as i watched it more recently, i grew to appreciate Doyles character more. However i think i identify more with the real life Lewis Collins after watching an interview of him than Shaw. In real life interviews, i find Martin Shaw a bit ungrateful whenever he mentions the professionals. It's like he wishes it never happened and resents it.
@blammo7100 It might be because he doesn't want to be remembered for playing a 'hero' and as we all know, heroes are 1-dimensional. I can't blame an actor for slightly resenting something they've done. The Professionals might be the best thing ever, but for the actor it might not be. I don't think Shaw is being ungrateful. Would you just want to get credit for one role you've played, knowing other roles you have played may have had better acting? Maybe not.
Anytime I am driving in my car with my kids, and we have to go fast or change lanes, I always do the "dah dah dun, dah dah, dah da, da dah da da da dun "
What is Lewis Collins up to these days? We see plenty of Martin Shaw but the last time I saw Lewis he was playing the part of Doug Digby's (Brian Conley's) dad in The Grimley's .
I was a mere bot when this series aired and would have loved to have grown up looking like Lewis - sadly the 41 year old version of me is more of a resemblance to Harry Hill.
There are two intro's that I can think of that actually make you sit up and pay attention- this one which just fly's at you with no messing and the opening theme to The Sweeney.
I always thought Lewis Collins would have made a great James Bond. At that period after The Professionals ended they went and picked Timothy Dalton who wasn`t exactly a great bond.
There was no feeling like it when this theme kicked in....there was 5 minutes of the story being set up, then just at a dramatic bit...BOOM this intro started, Brilliant, there has never been anything to match it since!!
I have never seen this show but I'll throw my two cents in nonetheless; maybe one of the most kickass theme songs I've ever heard. You Brits are awesome.
this would such a good tune for the single guy in the love lift on take me out

For anyone iterested ITV4 is showing re-runs of The Professionals quite frequently in the evenings at the moment. I wasn't born when it was first shown but it's fantastic, brilliant writing & brilliant performancnes & a young Martin Shaw & Lewis Collins = so beautiful to look at!

@Sezzie86 Do you watch Minder, Sweeney and the rest? ITV4 is the best channel!

OK Chaps, 30-40 years on, Who did you identify with ? -Bodie or Doyle ?
Perhaps a poll is due ?
guthywoodry 1 year ago

Maybe not.

@originalpickaxe Lewis Collins wasn't proud, he ended up playing Panto in Stockport during the 90s lol.

@Thermalfiredotcom You need to watch some :), it was THE UK cop show of the 80s imo.

@Thermalfiredotcom It's Starsky and Hutch with English accents and a better theme tune.
What's not to like?
