Combustion itself produces carbon dioxide + water. The water is initially hot and in vapor form; when it leaves the bowl it cools and condenses in the bottom of the bowl and the stem. Obstructions and turbulence will promote this condensation. Actually water production is a sign that the charge is burning well. I have found no better way of dealing with water than a pipe cleaner down to the bowl - the balsa and other devices only accumulate the water.
Super cool idea...yet again Zubris...I love it....you see this is what pipe smoking is all about...these are the kind of things your grandfather might have done, living in a time where you used what you had and not what you could buy in a shop...brilliant stuff...dub
Thank You Dub! May be soon I will make a videoanswer about my method (low budget) of cleaning the pipes . The experience of other people - it is priceless stuff!
yeah, i was actually going to suggest this same thing. My tobacconist suggest putting one or two Erics Keystone (those little packets of sandstone pebbles) into the bottom of the bowl. the only caution would be to make sure you don't suck that thing into the shank hole. i suppose if you were careful to pack it just so, that would do the trick on a slurpy pipe.
I've read that it is important for many reasons. Building cake on the bottom takes time, that's why it's important to smoke the bowl till the end. It's easier to form with bowls that are tapered at the bottom. I would say it helps resolve gurgle issues...but again narrow air passage is also a big contributor.
Michael...sorry for my delayed response to this one....but I heard Denicool works well, the only possible downside might be it would slow down cake build-up on the bottom of the bowl...but I still think it's worth a try.
Thanks, that was great. Funny I have two Hercules Bents, one has a balsa filter, and one does not. Neither of them gurgles. I have a Petersons St. Patricks Day (Beautiful Pipe) it gurgles
I would think condensed humidity from the air may cause some wetness by itself (regardless of tobacco) The pipe design must be a factor in any case.
are activated coal filters more absorbing than others? (IDEALLY: could you make a video about different pipe filter types and their advantages/disadvantages?)
Great Videos and many thanks for taking the time. I always thought my gurgling was from sponge-mouth, heh...but my curved stems are surely my most wet.
Thanks for the videos! I usually soak it up with a cleaner, but after a while it comes back. I'll try flicking it, and probably have the airway opened up a bit. Thanks again, really informative vids :)

Instead Denicool pipe crystals can be used a few pips of rice, it absorbs moisture perfectly. I also use it sometimes instead of carbon filter.

Great info. I read somewhere that developing a really good cake in the bottom of the bowl at the heel will in most cases resolve gurgling issues

I came across a product 'Denicool' pipe crystal which is suppose to absorb moisture in pipe. Do you have any information about this?

Thanks for the tip about slow-down in cake build-up on the bottom of the bowl.
I did try them and felt that the effect is minimal.

Simply put 9mm charcoal filters absorb the most, but savinelli 9mm balsa takes less flavor out.

I'll try out the balsa, thanks!

1-wet tobacco
2-Condensation occurs when a vapor is cooled to its dew point,

Thanks for the science lesson. But I still say a narrow obstructed air passage is a far bigger contributor than a wet tobacco.
